I received this book for free for an honest review from netgalley. Thank you for the opportunity.
Absolutely love this book it totally got me into more monster shifter romances. Adorable and sexy.
There isn't much you can say about this other than it's fun! It's short, sweet, and to the point. A little outlandish, a little insta-love, a whole lot of a good, quick read. I'll be looking for Mia Harlan when I'm in the mood for a giggle.
Thank you, NetGalley, for this ARC!
"Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door" by Mia Harlan is a quirky and fun paranormal romance that combines humor, whimsy, and a touch of the unexpected. Harlan’s writing is known for its playful tone and imaginative plots, making this novel a delightful escape for readers who enjoy lighthearted and unconventional love stories.
The novel likely centers around a protagonist who discovers that their seemingly ordinary neighbor has a very unusual secret—they’re a shifter who can transform into a rubber duckie. As bizarre as it sounds, this setup provides plenty of opportunities for comedic situations, endearing moments, and a unique twist on the typical shifter romance genre. The protagonist might find themselves caught up in the antics and challenges that come with having a rubber duckie shifter as a neighbor, leading to unexpected romance, friendship, and perhaps even a bit of mystery.
Harlan's characters are likely to be charming and quirky, with the protagonist navigating a mix of bewilderment and attraction as they get to know their unusual neighbor. The story probably balances humor with the developing romance, creating a narrative that's both heartwarming and amusing. The shifter element adds a layer of magical realism to the story, making it an enjoyable read for fans of paranormal romance who are looking for something fresh and entertaining.
"Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door" is perfect for readers who appreciate a blend of humor, romance, and the fantastical. Mia Harlan has likely crafted a story that's as light and bubbly as its premise, offering a feel-good read that’s sure to leave readers smiling. Whether you're a fan of shifter romances or just looking for a fun and whimsical love story, this novel promises to deliver plenty of laughs and heartwarming moments.
In all honesty, I expected wayyy worse for a shifter romance that includes a child's bath toy. There was some emotion interwoven with the shifting/spice, and I was grateful for the dual POV. Overall, it did what it set out to do.
Thank you to the author for the review copy.
Well, what can I say about this book…
Take a struggling guardian to a brood of kids who’ve lost their parents, and add in a smokin’ hot neighbor who also happens to be a shifter who turns into a…yep, you guessed it, a rubber ducky.
Was the shifter part necessary to the story? I’d argue it wasn’t. It would have been a perfectly nice romance with the boy next door without it, and I can’t say the rubber ducky part of it made all that much sense to me. Having said that, I did pick it up as a laugh when I may not have otherwise so I suppose the shifter angle did its job and hooked my interest.
This short and hilarious read is one that I love to talk about. I am so excited that so many "absurd" plots are coming into the mainstream and are accessible to the masses. We need to celebrate more weird and wholesome (and maybe not so wholesome) stories.
I don’t think I was the intended audience for this book, and therefore don’t think my review would be fair to the author or prospective readers.
This is 4-stars for enjoyment, it's not an indication of quality! I don't think anyone reads this expecting great literature, and you're going to get exactly what you signed up for.
This is part of a series, but it can absolutely be read on its own. The structure of the universe is kind of a meta joke (shifters! therefore, fated mates! regardless of what you shift into) and remains unexplained beyond that paranormal normal books have it right and nothing more needs to be said. There's no explanation even attempted to the underlying universe's magic, it's just hand-waved away, and that's not inappropriate for the length and pace of the story.
eARC from NetGalley.
Found this short story to be a little silly for me … too many ducks, and unreal shifting to an inanimate objects and unrealistic love story. Won’t read anymore of these.
Thank you to the publisher and the author for an advanced readers copy!
went into this knowing it wasn’t serious and it definitely delivered. super quick romance with a quirky twist of the man being a rubber duck shifter. could be elaborated on massively as well as made into a longer romance.
I don't know what I just read...but at the same time, I do. I just felt like this was not good :/
I'm not a fan of insta-love and breeding kinks. I thought it could be fun bath time with a rubber duck, but there was hardly any spice in this...actually, was there any?
Thank you to NetGalley, Mia Harlan, and Mia Books for the opportunity to read and review this Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest opinions.
I never read books like this but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it was written and how good the plot was. This book had me cracking up and swooning at every page. This book has definitely opened my eyes to a new genre of books and I’m so excited!
This was such a cute novella! My first duckie shifter experience. It’s has all the instalove, fated mates goodness wrapped into its short pages!
Will without a doubt be checking out more from Mia Harlan.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for an honest reviews. All opinions are my own.
Obviously the cover drew me in most of all.
I thought the title and cover were hilarious however the execution of this tale was a bit of a miss. I love crazy shifter books but this one didn't seem ready to be published....
A big thank you to NetGalley and Mia Books for the eARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. Well this was a unique one. I still can't wrap my mind around shifting into inanimate objects when you are startled! Luckily it was short. The scenario felt forced with the kids. I didn't hate this or the writing, it was just very different and odd. 3 stars. I doubt I would have bought this.
Ok so this book was on that I thought was going to just be stupid. However, this by far was one of the best books I read this year. 🤦♀️ Why I have no clue!! The writing was easy to read and the story itself was amazing. It was so freaking cute and short and man I need more!! It's spicy and quirky and I loved every page.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this ARC!
This books was good! Not my favorite but still really good. I recommend

This was really cute with a bizarreness to it that I actually enjoyed. It was really fast paced but it worked well.
This book does a delightful quick take on the fated mates trope, delivering a sweet and tension-filled romance with just the right amount of on-page spice. It was a quick, easy read that kept me engaged from start to finish. Perfect for anyone looking for a delightful escape!
Thank you Netgalley and Mia Harlan for this ARC.
This was unlike anything I have ever read before, and was somehow exactly what I needed in my life right now. It was a quick and easy read, and had me laughing out loud all the way through. I adored Rachel and Sig - while the premise of their relationship sounds absolutely bonkers, somehow it just works and I was so sad when it was over.
