I was riveted throughout this book. It’s been a while since I found myself having trouble putting down a book. I appreciated the multiple POV. And the ending was so satisfying.
Thank you to Netgalley for an early copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This is my third Liane Moriarty book and I was pumped to get approved because her books are usually really good!
The story follows several passengers on a domestic flight in which an older lady tells them their cause of death and how old they will be when they die. It then jumps from her backstory to whether her predictions come true with a few different passengers.
I really enjoyed the premise and it reminded me of the The Measure in which people turn a certain age and receive a box that contains a string of how long their life would be.
I'm not sure if this was intentional or not but the chapters didn't have the narrator's name at the beginning which bothered me a little bit because sometimes it took a few sentences to realize who was talking. It might have been due to the book being an ARC though.
I would have enjoyed if there were more chapters about the different characters instead of basically half the book being about the "Death Lady" 's backstory. It also felt a bit long. I did like the short chapters and overall thought it was a good read.
Liane moriarty is an author who needs no introduction at this point. Her works have been hit and miss for me-but this one is more hit for me. Here one moment opens with an interesting premise. It’s an innocuous day and a flight like any other when a woman stands up in the aisles and begins to predict how and when various passengers on the flight will die. Many on the plane take it as the ramblings of perhaps a mentally ill woman, but the warnings still rattle them. The passengers begin to die in ways predicted and hysteria escalates among the remaining passengers as they try to escape fate.
The novel jumps back and forth between some of the main passengers and the woman (death lady as she has been dubbed), as we learn about her past and her history.
Like many of the books she writes, Moriarty once again manages a sprawling ensemble of characters, but the death lady emerges as the star. Themes of free will, grief, loss, mental illness, and family cause this to be a deeper read than some of her previous works. While there are holes in the plot (moriarty almost can’t seem to settle on a consistent thread to follow), this is a page turner that will hook readers. If you are a fan of moriartys works, check this out, if you are a new fan or one looking to start, this one wouldn’t be a bad novel to get familiar with her!
Thanks to the publisher for providing this arc via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
During a late, but otherwise seemingly innocuous flight, a woman starts predicting the cause and age of death of all the patrons. While unusual, most don’t think too much of it; until her predictions start coming true. Is it coincidence or true predictions? This story follows the time after the flight with several passengers as well as the history of the woman behind the predictions.
I am a fan of Liane Moriarty’s works. I usually find them to be a fairly easy, compelling read. This one was an enjoyable read, but I did find it a bit hard to really get into the rhythm of things with this story.
The chapters are mostly alternating between Cherry (The Death Lady) and differing passengers from the flight. I think this is another one of those stories that suffers from following the perspectives of a large cast of characters and having some much more interesting than others.
Unfortunately, the most abundant of chapters followed Cherry, and I found those the ones that I wanted to rush through the most. I was much more interested in many of the other characters, but we only got to experience a pretty superficial amount with each of them. This probably would have been more enjoyable if we only followed a few characters rather than 7ish.
You never felt like the stakes were that high for the characters. I wanted to see at least some of them put a little more weight into believing the predictions, but almost all of them brushed it off (except for the young mother, Paula).
I still enjoyed the read, but I felt like it could have been more.
3.5 rounded up to 4.
I needed more from this book, HERE ONE MOMENT, and this author, Liane Moriarty. The author has become very popular from her previous work and subsequent translations on screen. This newest work is a hybrid fiction that offers a suggestion of psychic magic with a large dose of anticipatory grief mixed with an outsized role for determinism. It’s somewhat of a mess, actually. If Moriarty had chosen even one direction and devoted herself to it, the book could have been quite good. There are too many characters with half-hearted backstories. And a protagonist that takes too many pages to become compelling. I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
Okay, this one is not for those with high anxiety that constantly worry about something happening to their loved ones!! I couldn't relax while reading this until I was about halfway through it. I would have been a mess if I were a passenger on this airplane. I loved the idea of this novel but wanted it to follow a different path. I didn't care for the "Death Lady" until I was about 3/4 of the way through the book. Her storyline ended up being incredibly sweet and painful to go through. How could anyone blame her for what she did on that plane after going through so much? While this isn't my favorite Liane Moriarty novel (I'm sorry!), I'll still be highly recommending this to everyone. It's a great read for 2024!
This is such a unique and engaging read. Despite the longer length of the book, I flew through it in a day. I couldn't put it down after reading the opening scene with the ominous predictions by 'The Death Lady.' I just needed to know how her predictions would play out and what would become of the interesting cast of characters introduced on the plane. I enjoyed how the plot unravelled. I don't want to elaborate for fear of spoilers, but if you like slightly out-there suspense books, you won't want to miss this one.
This book was very clever! It seemed like it would be somewhat far-fetched but the characters and their situations were both believable and likeable even the one you probably should have hated for causing so much upheaval. I loved it!
Totally immersive, beautifully written, character driven and having an important message to share, combine to make Liane Moriarty’s latest book, “Here One Moment” a five star read from beginning to end. At the start of the story, passengers are embarking upon a short flight from Hobart, in Tasmania, to Sydney on mainland Australia. As they board we read snippets about some who turn out to be main characters as the plot progresses
After the flight takes off, a woman who had not been very remarkable up until this time, rises from her seat to address each of the other passengers in turn. Her remarks are simple. She announces, “Cause of death ___. Date of death____,” and proceeds to fill in the blanks with specific predictions for everyone. As the unknown woman, assumed to be a psychic, makes her way down the aisle, six passengers become horrified by the news of an early or violent death. Allegra Patel, the sole flight attendant notice the disturbance and finds herself unsure of how to deal with this unexpected event, which finally ends when the fortune teller, dubbed “ lady death “ returns to her seat.
My immediate thought was that this story line would be similar to “The Measure” where worldwide citizens are mailed a piece of string indicating their life expectancy. But The Measure was more a parable with the mysteriously appearing string having questionable origins. In this book, we know where the predictions come from. What the author holds in suspense is the motive behind these predictions. The woman is revealed to be Cherry, daughter of a fortune teller. Has Cherry inherited her mother’s gifts ? Is she a charlatan? Is she mentally stable ? This mystery shrouds most of the book.
Back stories of each primary character are told in alternating short chapters. The author excels in writing books with very clearly drawn characters, which one reason why I love her books. Usually so many points of view can
be confusing, but Ms, Moriarty’s forte is her ability to describe her people in such detail and depth that the reader is totally engaged with their identifiable distinct personalities.
Is it possible that beautiful Allegra Patel, young flight attendant is suicidal? Will Paula Binici’s infant son drown at age 7? Will Sue die of pancreatic cancer in a few years ? Will civil engineer Leo succumb to an accident at work?
Will Ethan die from being assaulted? Does Newlywed Dom have to protect his wife Eve from a murder he will commit? What is going on? How is life altered by unsolicited bad news?It is very mysterious and becomes even more so when a few predictions start coming true.
The author gave me an education about statistical/ mathematical relevance. Do events relate to each other or do they each stand alone? Is life preordained? Can humans exercise free will to change their destiny? Ultimately there is a very important message about living ones life to the fullest every single day.
I guess it’s obvious that I loved this book. Five impressive stars for a story that not only had me hooked from beginning to end, but also staying up reading into the wee hours to find out what would happen next. It is being published in a few days, September 10, 2024. Look for it! Many thanks to Netgalley and Crown Publishing for an ARC in exchange for my review.
It is only when we truly know and understand that we have a limited time on Earth and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up that we begin to live each day to the fullest as if it were the only one we had.” —Elisabeth Kübler-Ross
Here One Moment is the story of what can happen when you know approximately when and how you might die. On a delayed flight, that already had people anxious to reach their destination, an elderly woman stood up and walked down the aisle of the plane and told people the age they would die and their cause of death. Some people shrugged the old woman off as a crackpot, but others were seriously spooked especially one mom whose infant son was forecasted to die at age 7 of drowning. After 3 deaths were accurately predicted the former passengers all start paying attention. Who was the woman? Can the predictions change? Do you believe in fate? And, what would you do differently with the time you have remaining? How would you choose to live? I found this book to be engrossing and when I had to put it down, could not wait to pick it back up and continue reading. Interesting characters and a well told story told in short chapters to propel you forward. I gave it 4.5 stars. Read this book.
Thank you to Net Galley #netgalley and Crown Publishing for my advance reader copy.
While the plot was decent, I wish there would have been more of a twist at the end. While the story was good, especially during the beginning, it quickly flopped due to an overabundance of fluff which bored me to tears and made me fall asleep. I enjoyed other works by the author and had high hopes for this one as well.
This book touches on a subject rarely talked about in the manor it is written in this book .. Makes you think what would you do if you knew how much time you had left .. Would you accept your fate or try to fight the ultimate outcome …. The choice is up to you … Do you believe in predictions or not ?? I enjoyed this book made you think outside your comfort zone … I will definitely be seeking out more books by this author.
It should have been a short, simple flight from Hobart to Sydney. But, a woman makes predictions of how and why people will die. When three of the people die as predicted, lives are upended.
What should we do with the lives we have been given? How should we live, knowing we are all going to die eventually?
This may sound depressing, but it's not. Here, One Moment is filled with characters I loved and is such a hopeful book. I absolutely loved it.
I actually forced myself to read this book at a slow pace because I was so engrossed in it, I didn't want to miss anything. Liane Moriarty is a masterful storyteller. There are a ton of characters, but they are fully developed and you become invested in their future. Definitely a rollercoaster of emotions. I think it is her best book, so far. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy.
The concept of “Here One Moment” is definitely one to make you think deeply, and if I think too hard on what I would do in that situation I get a sense of unnerving, so it’s safe to say this was an interesting read!
During a flight, a woman predicts the time and cause of death for many passengers. Some are many years in the future destined for a long life, others find their prediction to be in the near future.
In the following weeks when the woman’s predictions begin to come true, the other passengers begin to panic.
The story is told from multiple POV giving us insight to each passenger. The story maintains good pacing throughout and leaves you in suspense as they race to figure out what is happening.
I enjoyed the alternate chapters and the underlying themes of what we would do if we knew our time was limited and how we can make the most of our time and value each day we are given.
Thank you to Liane Moriarty, Crown Publishing and NetGalley for the EARC!
Run, don’t walk, to get your copy of Liane Moriarty’s “Here One Moment!” This book had me completely enthralled, on the edge of my seat, the entire time. One day, a woman (who will become known as “The Death Lady”) gets on a flight and predicts cause and age of death for many of the flight’s passengers. The story then alternates between her point of view and the passengers’ as three passengers’ predictions come true.
After having several of my favorite authors disappoint me this summer, this book was like a breath of fresh air. The story was so well-crafted and well-written, infused with witty observations and characters you could relate with easily. Suspenseful, but not dark. I could not put it down. I think readers of many stripes will enjoy this book – I can’t quite pin it to a specific genre.
A perfect read. Big thanks to Netgalley and Crown Publishing for the advance copy in exchange for honest review. 5 stars, highly highly highly recommend!
3.5 stars. A well crafted story like I’ve come to expect from Liane Moriarty, though her trademark twist near the end was less shocking than in her previous books. The twist wasn’t predictable - at least I didn’t see it coming, though perhaps more perceptive readers might - but it also wasn’t thrilling.
I really loved this book!! The whole premise and concept of the story made me really think what would I do in this situation. I am still thinking about it days since finishing this book. If I knew how much time I had left and knew how and exactly I would pass— would I change my habits and behavior? I find this so fascinating and the way our behaviors may change based on a future prediction. The chapters introduced in the story were a wide variety and loved meeting each one. The cover is also so perfect for this story and how a ripple can change the whole path of someone’s future. The butterfly also with the changes in their life. It’s such a unique story and I highly recommend it!
This book is the best I read in some time. It was a page turner, and I was invested in learning about each character throughout the book. The concept was great and was a good mystery/thriller combination. I thoroughly enjoyed the ending! Thank you Netaglley and Crown Publishing for an ARC
4.5/5 starts rounded up
RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty follows the passengers of a commercial flight that was inturrupted by a woman who got up and started shouting when everyone was going to die and in what manner.
This book was a really incredible page turner. It was multiple POV, and allowed through that form for a reader for follow a number of different characters that all were on the airplane and given a death prediction.
I was so eager to find out what happened, and felt very invested in the story. Sometimes when a chapter ended I was so bummed because I knew we wouldn’t see that character for a couple more chapters and was so curious what happened!!!
I really liked the writing style and thought it added to the mystery and suspense really well!!
Thank you Netaglley and Crown Publishing for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!
