Here One Moment is an extraordinary novel full of brilliant characters and a story line that is beyond entertaining. It's a hefty read coming in at over 500 pages but each page is worth the time and energy you'll put into reading this fantastic book. In fact time will fly as you go on this mind bending journey.
Imagine for a second you are on a flight and a woman starts walking around giving predictions on each person's death day and cause of death. A few people take what the woman says to heart and a few others like yourself blow it off or at least try to. Then one prediction after another starts to come to fruition. This causes you to pause and consider your own prediction, your own mortality and that of others. Do you continue to live you life as normal or take precautions in an attempt to change future outcomes. Do you try to beat the odds or is the reaper nipping at your feet?
This book left me contemplating my own life and that of my loved ones. The chapters are short and flow right into each other. I found that myself genuinely caring about the characters and full of emotions. This is one book you won't want to miss.
Cherry. Cherry. Cherry. She is no one, a simple woman with no designated features. Possibly a loner. She seems like she wouldn’t hurt a fly; but, she hurt many people for months and months. This story will put life as a whole into perspective. There are many things you don’t ever appreciate in life that is just skated by, like breathing.
This is unlike any other book by Liane but very much enjoyed.
5/5 stars! I couldn’t put this book down and finished reading it in two days. I was hooked from the very beginning. This book is released September 10, 2024. Thank you so much to Crown Publishing, Liane Moriarty and Netgalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book.
This is probably my favorite Liane Moriaty book. I was invested in each character's future and what was going to happen next. For a 500 page book, I was able to finish this in less than 48 hours. Great pacing and narration. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review!
Book 63 of 2024.

Read this if you fear the reaper, death, or the future.
Special thanks to Crown publishing for this ARC. It was a unique premise that I haven’t seen before. Fighting fate, racing the clock, & knowing how your end will come. Great read from Moriarty.

Synopsis 📚
Fate can’t be fought… or can it?
It is a normal day for the passengers on the flight from Hobart to Sydney. Sure, there is a delay, but these things happen. They all begin to relax into their seats, ready for an uneventful flight. It turns out to be everything but uneventful. A lady slowly snakes her way through every row on the plane and she tells each passenger two things: cause of death, age of death. Her voice is calm, measured, and contains not a trace of uncertainty. The passengers are all confused, some annoyed, angry, and even indignant, but they brush it off, make their way off the flight, and essentially forget the lady’s haunting words. That is until a passenger from their flight is dead… and they realize lady’s prediction was right. More passengers die and the ones who remain are absolutely terrified. They scramble to find the lady, a the Death Lady, who predicted their deaths and desperately try to sidestep their fates. But as the Death Lady said, fate cannot be fought… or can it?
Personal Thoughts 💭
One of my favorite things about this book is probably the multiple points of view from different passengers on the flights and the Death Lady! I I really very much loved seeing all these different perspectives from all these characters. And then of course, I loved the Death Lady’s POV. This was a lovely read with a wonderful mix of everything. A bit suspenseful, a tad philosophical, a smidge reflective, this book makes you wonder about free will, destiny, and really makes you question: How much control do you truly have over your life? I went into this book with a bit of expectations and had some theories about the ending and such, and I was pleasantly surprised! The book was not what I expected, but I did end up liking it! For anyone looking for something suspenseful to read that isn’t cookie cutter, this book is it!
This is one of my favorites of Lianne’s best books. I cared about the characters. They were very read. I still want to know more about what happens to them. They’re were. Very relatable.
This novel took me on an amazing ride! It felt a little bit like that feeling I have when I'm driving on the highway and there's an accident, and I don't want to look, but I can't help looking. In other words, it was a compulsive page turner and I just had to keep reading in order to find out what happened to whom, and how, and why. I love the ending, and I also loved reading the "death lady's" story interspersed among some of the passengers' stories. There is SO MUCH to think about here, about the cause and effect of other peoples' words on our lives. I hope this is made into a movie!
Thanks to Netgalley, the author, and publisher, for an advanced reading copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I was excited to dive into Liane Moriarty's latest book, "Here One Moment." Known for her gripping thrillers, Moriarty takes a different yet equally compelling direction with this contemporary fiction piece. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
The story begins on what should be a routine, 90-minute domestic flight from Hobart to Sydney. The passengers are settling in, ready for an uneventful journey, but fate has other plans. Enter Cherry, a mysterious woman known as “The Death Lady.” As she makes her way down the aisle, she delivers unsettling predictions to the passengers, revealing the age and manner of their deaths. While some receive comforting news of long lives ahead, six individuals learn their demise is shockingly soon.
From this intriguing premise, Moriarty weaves a rich tapestry of interconnected lives. We follow several passengers as they grapple with Cherry's ominous prophecies. Each character's story is deeply engrossing, offering a unique perspective on the themes of mortality, fate, and the human condition.
One of the most remarkable aspects of "Here One Moment" is how Moriarty handles the multiple points of view. She seamlessly transitions between characters, each with their own distinct voice and narrative arc. Whether it’s the young mother facing an uncertain future, the elderly man contemplating the end of his days, or the career-driven professional reevaluating her priorities, every story is captivating.
Moriarty excels at delving into the psychological and emotional depths of her characters. She explores how the knowledge of one’s death can alter the course of their life, leading to profound changes in behavior, relationships, and outlook. The characters' reactions range from denial and anger to acceptance and transformation, providing a broad spectrum of human experience.
Cherry, the enigmatic “Death Lady,” is a fascinating character in her own right. As we learn about her backstory, we see the complexity of her role and the burden of her gift. Her presence on the flight acts as a catalyst, setting off a chain of events that reverberate through each passenger’s life.
The themes of grief, life, and death are handled with great sensitivity. Moriarty doesn’t shy away from the heavy topics but rather embraces them, encouraging readers to reflect on their own lives and the inevitable end we all face. The book is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of making the most of our time.
"Here One Moment" is a beautifully written, thought-provoking novel that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page. It’s a departure from Moriarty’s usual thrillers, but it’s every bit as thrilling in its exploration of the human psyche and the mysteries of life and death.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a deep, reflective read that challenges you to think about life’s big questions. Moriarty has once again proven her prowess as a storyteller, and "Here One Moment" is a testament to her versatility and talent.
Happy reading!
An evocative masterpiece with a powerful message: live your life fully in the limited time you have on earth - while enticing the reader to deeply ponder all the facets of fate. Can fate be fought? Or is it all pre-determined? If you already knew the cause of your date, and the year, would you still look both ways before crossing a street (please, always look both ways first)?
The premise is that a woman on a plane, goes person by person and announces what their cause of death will be, and in what year of life they'll die. Many don't believe, some do, and some waiver. Could this woman possibly have some supernatural ability, allowing her to know these things? Some were given a year of death (YoD) that's many decades away. Some, however, have mere months before their YoD. Most write it off, and think no more of it. Or try not to.
Until the deaths start occurring, just as the woman predicted they would. One death matching her prediction could surely be nothing more than coincidence, right? But what about the second, the third? Some people from the flight are still not too concerned. Others are very concerned and some start making changes in an attempt to stave off their prediction. Or make choices based off the fact that they now think their imminent death is unavoidable.
Moriarty has great prose, occasionally infuses a little humor or lightheartedness in where it's desperately needed. Pacing is excellent. And possibly my favorite part of her writing is her characters. They're exceptionally well developed and dimensional. Her dialogue is great.
This novel does jump around between many POVs. It's effective for this book, and easy to tell whose POV you're in pretty immediately, but it did kinda grind on me (mostly in a good way lol) because I just NEEDED to know what happened next to whichever character. This book keeps you enthralled from the get-go, and you won't know what's actually going on until the end.
This novel is yet another example of Moriarty's supernatural ability to weave multiple seemingly unconnected stories into the most beautiful tapestry. She is a master of her craft. If you like literary fiction, I cannot imagine you won't enjoy this novel.
I'll be surprised if there isn't a TV adaptation, and I cannot wait to watch it. I've already started working on a fan cast, with Melissa McBride and Alexis Bledel playing "The Death Lady" at different ages.
Thank you to Crown Publishing, Netgalley, and Liane Moriarty sharing an eARC of this with me in exchange for an unbiased review.

How would you respond if you were told the age and cause of your death? Would you make different choices to avoid such a fate? In Moriarty's lastest book a psychic boards a plane and begins making such predictions to the various passengers on the plane. The story then follows 6 characters as they navigate their life and the choices they make in the wake of their death date.
I found the beginning of this book easy to get into and was intrigued to find out how it would unfold. I usually love the way Moriarty is able to develop characters, but found this one to drag in the middle. I wanted some chapters to move faster and others I wanted to keep reading. It wasn't the page turner I expect from this author..
Fate cannot be fought. As Cherry goes down the aisle and predicted the timing as well as the cause of death of each passenger, it begs the question that if one were to know the time and cause of death, how would such person change to live in order to live to the fullest and if each day were to be their last. Or would they like Paula and Timmy take such preemptive action to ensure that drowning is merely a thought as Timmy grows past his 7th birthday. Cherry certainly experienced a lot of grief and loss in her life but she always chose love as identified with her relationship with Ned. He made her feel calm, confident and satisfied in their love for each other. She unfortunately predicted what were to happen to him and their best friends but it didn't harden her feelings against still choosing to live versus being in a myriad of depression. Like Stephen Hawkins said, even if predetermined, we still look twice when crossing the road. This book really asks the reader to evaluate how they are living and if a diagnostic were to come into play, would they be happy or change course. Very thought provoking..
On a delayed flight, tensions are high by then elevate when Cherry aka “The Death Lady” moved passenger to passenger predicting age and cause of death. Should they believe the prediction? Ignore it? Why would she do this? Evaluation of life, loss, love, beliefs and so much more. Enjoyed but not as much as other Moriarty books.
Here One Moment is different from most of Liane Moriarty's past novels with a bit of a mystical twist, but it still has all of her expected humor and touches of Australian life. Liane Moriarty is one of my favorite authors, and her latest does not disappoint. It opens with a woman on a plane as she gives each passenger an expected cause and age of death. The book follows several of those passengers and the fallout of knowing how and when you will die. Without getting preachy, the book touches on the need to live life to its fullest. It was a wonderfully entertaining read.
I think this was her best book yet! Well written and really kept me on the edge the whole time. Very well written. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher!
This was a beautiful book and it flowed so seamlessly between the narrator’s story and the overall plot. I love shifting perspectives and a story with moving pieces that somehow fall together. Another amazing work by Liane - I’ll be spreading the word about this one to anyone who will listen.
Haunting. The structure! All of v short chapter 32. 25% in and unsure of main character besides Cherry…is it Cherry? I love that name. I love this author’s writing. Every time. Ohh we are going to follow the plane full of people. That’s going to be tricky. How is the author going to handle it? I forgot I was talking about Liane Moriarty. The answer is beautifully. The first sentence of chapter 93 and I stopped breathing. It’s a whole truth. I really love her writing.
The last sentence on chapter 112. This…Friends CAN save your life. How to wrap this up? Perfection…no notes. ILYSM Liane Moriarty.
compared to her other books, i didn’t find myself to enjoy this one. the plot was almost totally character driven rather than incident driven, and i didn’t like any of the characters much either, unfortunately.
4.5 stars
One of the best novels I have read this year. The books follows Cherry, a woman who predicted the time and cause of death of passengers on a flight, as well as several of the passengers. Cherry’s life story alternate chapters with following the characters whose deaths has been predicted and how the predictions have changed their thinking and lives. All of the characters are well developed and you cannot help but to root for all of them.
I was worried about how this book was going to end. Such a fascinating premise with potential for a very unsatisfying ending. But the story was tied up beautifully with a really balanced narrative.
