Terminal Surf is the 12th mystery thriller featuring PI/fixer Lewis Cole written by Brendan DuBois. This reformat and re-release from Severn House is not currently available for retail sale, but might be available through library collections/Hoopla digital. It's worth noting that the ebook format provided for review has a has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links throughout.
This is a very well written, tensely atmospheric and very much action driven mystery thriller in a continuing series. So much of it is sad and traumatic (human trafficking and migrant death) and ripped directly out of the current day's headlines (as is the entire series).
The plotting is tight and the mystery works well. There is a fair bit of continuity in the history from the earlier books as well as returning characters, so readers who are unfamiliar with the interrelationships and haven't read the earlier volumes might struggle a bit to keep them straight, otherwise it's self contained and works fine as a standalone.
Four and a half stars, a strong series and a good read. It would make a good choice for a long binge/buddy read. This entry is a definite high point for the continuing series thus far.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.
In “Terminal Surf,” Brendan DuBois delivers a gripping and thought-provoking addition to the Lewis Cole series. Set against the picturesque yet turbulent coasts of New Hampshire and Maine, this novel plunges readers into the dark underbelly of human smuggling.
Lewis Cole, a retired Department of Defense analyst turned local columnist, stumbles upon a tragic scene—a drowned migrant woman and her child. This discovery thrusts him into the heart of a human snuggling ring.
The novel’s realistic portrayal of violence and human suffering might be too intense for sensitive readers.
Terminal Surf” is a powerful and unputdownable thriller that combines a compelling protagonist, timely themes, and a richly atmospheric setting.
Lewis Cole takes on human traffickers in this latest novel.
Another fast paced, enjoyable read from Brendan DuBois.

Terminal Surf by Brendan DuBois is a very highly recommended investigative thriller and the twelfth book in the Lewis Cole series. This is an excellent addition to an outstanding series!
After Lewis Cole discovers a drowned migrant woman and her child outside his home, he suddenly finds himself in the midst of a highly emotional controversy involving a human smuggling operation on the coasts of New Hampshire and Maine. The Department of Homeland Security is on a nearby beach where other bodies have washed ashore and quickly take control of the scene away from Detective Sgt. Diane Woods. Reporter and girlfriend Paula Woods does manage to take a few pictures for a story. Suddenly Tyler Beach becomes the focal point for activists from both sides of the immigration issue and a well know reporter tries to take advantage of the high emotions.
DuBois treads into choppy waters with this highly topical plot focused on human smuggling and does an exceptional job of looking at all sides of the issue without lecturing the reader. I've been known to caution authors to keep their personal political/social views to themselves as it diminishes and dates the novel but no such note is needed here. The focus of the plot is to uncover who is doing the smuggling and is responsible for the deaths. The investigation Lewis undertakes is interesting and there were several surprising twists along the way.
At this point in the series, Lewis is a well-developed character and has a complicated background that those following the series will know. Terminal Surf can be read as a stand-alone novel but knowing all the backstory of Lewis, Diane, Felix, and Paula makes the current novel a richer reading experience. Thanks to Severn River Publishing for providing me with an advance reader's copy. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.
The review will be published on Edelweiss, X, Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
