Having already read Tim Chester's helpful commentary on Isaiah, in another series, I was keen to see how he approached the Psalms. This commentary is thoughtful and faithful to the text without being heavily technical. In the introduction, Chester discusses how to pray through the Psalms as a way of expressing our own heart's cries to the Lord. The Psalms are not just beautiful words, but heartfelt prayers and songs that help us to express our longings and support us on the transformative journey of aligning ourselves in faith with the Living God. The author describes these thoughts with passion and sensitivity that gives this reader the confidence that they will also be a faithful teacher and guides through the text of the Psalms. I also appreciate that Chester takes a Christ-centred approach to reading the Psalms, which is in keeping with the tradition of the Historic Church. The commentary's exposition of the Psalms is pastoral in tone with great engagement with historical voices. I see this commentary as being helpful to a hungry reader, as well as ministers and leaders who seek to preach or teach from Psalms. I highly recommend this commentary and it will be one of the first that I draw on when I next preach from the Psalms.
I’m not a great Bible student or reader but I do enjoy the psalms, even if I have little clue what most of them refer to. This book takes the psalms as numbered and gives a line by line analysis. Sounds simple, but there is much depth here.
Mr Chester introduces many and diverse thinkers from the Christian tradition but also from other religions. It gives the psalms much clearer meanings. I have learned a great deal but in a relaxed non-preachy way and I’ll look out for other books by this author.
I was given a copy of this book by NetGalley
A really useful guide which has helped me to have a deeper understanding of the Psalms. Clear and concise, leaving lots of room for reflection.
A great commentary to Psalms 42-89. Helpful but shortish introduction and then in depth explanation of the psalms. I appreciated that the whole NIV text of the psalms was in the commentary and wasn't needed to be looked up elsewhere,
This was a wonderful commentary on the Psalms, and one I look forward to adding to my collection. Looking forward to the other volumes within the series as well.
I received an e-galley from the publisher through NetGalley,
I found this commentary to be very helpful in my personal study of the Psalms. I like that it included lots of wisdom from classic Protestant thinkers, as well as from faith leaders working in a variety of cultural contexts today. The writing was straightforward and easy to understand without feeling dumbed down.
The writer’s theological conclusions didn’t always align with mine. There were some Calvinist interpretations that I didn’t agree with. The writer also always circles back to how each psalm ultimately points to Christ, which can be inspiring, but for some I wish there had been more time spent on how the original writer might have intended them.
Still, I would recommend this to anyone wishing to dive deeper into the Psalms. Overall, I found it to be a useful study tool, and I feel wiser for having read it.
A beautiful commentary on the Psalms like you've never seen it before. This will really help you understand this often quoted yet often misunderstood and misapplied portion of scripture. The Psalms are deeper than we realise and necessary for every day life.
The Hodder Bible Commentary: Psalms 42-89 is an exposition of the psalms. The thorough explanation of each psalm and the context around it was really enlightening for me. This was a deep-dive into the psalms, without sounding like a college text book. The only other comment I have, is that I personally prefer the NKJV over the NIV. This is not a complaint, though, and the use of the NIV does make this a little more accessible and easier to read.
I gave The Hodder Bible Commentary: Psalms 42-89 a rating of 4/5 stars. Highly recommend for anyone interested in getting deeper into the Psalms than your typical Sunday sermon.
Thank you to NetGalley, Tim Chester, and John Murray Press for the opportunity to read the ARC of this book. A review was not required, and all opinions expressed are my own.
This was a pretty good Bible Commentary. I was hesitant about this because I've never heard of the writers, but I was impressed.
The Psalms are so interesting and I really enjoyed diving deeper into them to learn more than just the surface information.
I learned a lot from this and would recommend it to anyone looking for a new Bible Commentary.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own *
A extensive commentary on Psalms 42-89, including line-by-line analysis to help us better understand. This book analyses the various ways we can read these lyrical Scriptures and provides guidance on how to sing, pray, teach, and meditate on each psalm. The NIV text for each psalm is included alongside the discussion and can be used to deepen personal understanding, teach, or improve preaching. The psalms are ideal for guiding us through tough times through Christ, and this book shows us how to apply the principles to modern-day life.
I received an arc from NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
What a great study guide to be used to walk through the Psalms. Easy to follow and great for taking notes on the Psalms.
This devotional/study guide is definitely something I would purchase. The guide applies applicable stories and additional scripture references. Easy guide for the early Christian as well.
Once more a mature and yet accessible look at scripture, the introduction to this book is somewhat shorter than the previous ones which works well as each psalm has its own exposure. The verses and different section of each psalm are detailed with reference to the wider biblical texts and the contemporary world of the author. The imagery is well explained and even the potential feeling of the author is covered helping bring the psalms to life and make them resonate more clearly. The psalms are well researched and the wider references are useful for wider reading although it is the links within scripture that really helped me see the psalms and their different patterns so well.
A detailed commentary on psalms 42- 89, giving line by line analysis of each to help deepen our understanding. This book explores the different ways we can interpret these poetic Scriptures and guides us on how we might sing, pray teach or mediate over each psalm. The NIV text for each psalm.is provided alongside the discussion, which can be used to expand personal understanding, in teaching or for aiding preaching. The psalms are perfect for helping us navigate difficulties through Christ and this book guides us in applying the teachings to modern day living. #thehodderbiblecommentarypsalms42-89 #timchester #netgalley
My husband and I are always looking for Christian books for our kids to read at night with them. As a mom, I am also always looking for new Christina books, especially devotionals to read through to fill my cup.
This Is Not Forever by Sarah Grace Hollis is full of hope when life is not going as planned, or you’re feeling stuck. It was such a reminder to always turn to the Lord when life gets shaky and the foundation doesn’t feel secure. I loved how deep the devotionals were, but how simple they were. I really was able to reflect on them throughout the day, and had the time and attention to soak into the Bible verses, and the encouragement to see me throughout the day. Release date is August 19.
Comfort and Joy by Gwen Lantz and Sarah-Leigh Gerber is a book I cant wait to reread during the holiday season. It was all about how to slow down and enjoy the moment in the season. It was a wonderful advent to walk through the season, and remember the importance of the holiday. Release date is September 2.
Discovering Christmas by Amanda Jass is one I already told my husband we are purchasing for the holiday season. It’s an advent devotional for kids for the Christmas season to focus on the meaning of the season. I loved the illustrations, the sweet words, and simplicity of this book. My kids will absolutely adore this one. It would make a really sweet gift too! Release date is September 9.
The Easter Lamb by John Greco was told so sweet from a child point of view of the story of Easter. The way he intertwines Easter and the Passover, and so simply but deeply explains it all together with such a gentleness for children was wonderful. Release date is December 16.
I’ve Got the Joy and He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands were absolutely adorable. My two little boys loved reading this before bed. We love to listen to the songs of these, and so it was fun to see them flipping the book and saying all the words. The illustrations are beautiful and so colorful for kids. A perfect gift! Release date is August 12.
Waiting Isn’t a Waste by Mark Vrogop is a book I have in my amazon cart. This is a fantastic book on the Sioux characteristics of waiting.
