I struggled with this one. The idea of it was really interesting to me and I thought I'd really enjoy reading it but, once I started reading, I began to struggle with the writing style. Now a lot of this must be down to personal preference but I found it quite difficult to keep up with the fast pace and bipolar aspects of the writing. Switching from one emotion to another can work in books but it didn't work with the speed it was happening in this book. Going from happy one minute to sad the next made it very difficult for me to make it through the chapters. There was generally too much happening and I found it incredibly difficult to finish this specific book.
2.5 stars.
All our Yesterdays deeply touched me.
Sometimes, you could do everything right, but if it was your time, it was your time. That was what was so scary about dying. You never knew when it would happen to you.
This book was not the usual genre I prefer to read—one of the most emotional books. I didn’t cry though. Marcy’s character is very sensitive, kind, and forgiving, it takes huge heart and bravery to forgive the infidelity of the one you love the most. I didn’t like Cole’s character one bit. Initially, I adored their banter and their relationship together when they met in New York, but the pattern of his attitude towards Marcy didn’t change. I felt he was full of himself and took things supremely casual. But this book covers the romance between Marcy, an art curator whose first love was being an actor, and Cole, a budding musician who turns on to become a huge pop star.
I was completely immersed in this book from start to the end. I couldn’t relate to this book at all, but it touched me in areas of long-distance relationships and what it can do to a person if not communicated well. There was a lack of communication between Marcy & Cole. I felt Cole wasn’t as transparent towards Marcy as she was towards him.
The ending was a tearjerker as Marcy dies at 40 due to Cancer, leaving behind her husband and her daughter and her entire family & friends. Glad that Marcy got the peaceful ending that she deserved. I learned a lot from Marceline’s character. She taught me how to hold friendships no matter how far you are from your friends. She stood by Cole’s side throughout his Journey even though she was suspicious of him cheating on her. She taught me forgiveness and to run after your dreams whether or not you can achieve them, you should keep going.
I would recommend this book to someone who’s a fan of classic music & movies as this book has a lot of references for the same & for someone who has lost a loved one and the one’s seeking clarity in life. The book is slow-paced but the end is rightly rushed. I loved it and appreciate the author’s resilience in finishing this book. Eleanor, I did read the acknowledgments of this book and how much effort you had put into finishing this book. Truly commendable. I never thought I could complete this book.
I wanted to love this book. Something about it compelled me to read it through. But maybe I was looking for the characters to grow or feel connected to any of them. The writing fell flat for me. I didn't feel the chemistry between Marcy and Cole. Little nuggets that could have been expanded upon to create some emotion were thrown out here and there. I wanted the story to show me the characters versus telling me about them.
It wasn't until the epilogue that Marcy felt like a real person. This book has so much potential.

"All Our Yesterdays" follows Marcy, eighteen and just graduated high school as she navigates her relationship with Cole, who becomes a famous musician. I enjoyed reading this book and following Marcy and Cole through the ups and downs of their relationship. I felt that Eleanor Wells told a story I could easily get lost in. This book is a perfect summer read for for fans of the pop culture of early aughts. One thing I would have liked to see more of was more showing the characters emotions instead of telling. 3.5/5. it’s the summer of 1999 and on the cusp of adulthood and a new millennia, 18 year old Marcy visits New York City with her sister. here she meets up-and-coming musician, Cole, and so begins a tumultuous romance grounded in wealth and fame.
All Our Yesterday’s explores what it’s like to be pulled into a serious relationship before finding yourself, your values and what makes you tick. from the outside, Marcy has it all, but her status as muse and partner to one of the world’s biggest rock stars isn’t all that glamorous.
Wells’ writing is eloquent and exquisitely captures small town America. it made me nostalgic for a time and place I’ve not experienced before. the music and pop culture references were key to this, which I loved. each character’s development was also excellently considered and crafted; for instance I felt totally different about Cole at either ends of the book.
I can’t quite explain why but it felt like an accurate depiction of time passing. in the grand scheme of life, the years depicted in the novel aren’t that long, but you get a real sense of the day to day without a feeling of monotony. Wells is excellent at describing the little things in life, then depicting how these things come together to form a life changing relationship.
this is the perfect coming-of-age summer read. I read this almost entirely whilst sunbathing in the park over a hot weekend, which is how I think it should be consumed!
