This is so good! This is the first book by this author that I’ve read but I will 100% be reading more! The pacing was good, the characters were likable, the spicy was alright it wasn’t anything too wild. I would def recommend!
Everything about this debut novel by Collette Perri is absolute perfection. The tension between Alex and Pheobe starts from their first brief meeting and carries throughout the novel. With a full cast of characters, a gripping plot, and incredibly well written spicy scenes. This is perfect for fans of the Bridgerton Series or regency romances in general,
Dual POV, Spicy, FMC Ruined By Scandal, Author/Bookish FMC, Second Chance, Jealous MMC, He Falls First & Harder
This debut author has promise. The book had a contemporary feel despite being a historical romance. The stakes and obstacles seemed low to me, and the plot focused heavily on the physical relationship.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC.
I did enjoy this book! The reading was entertaining, well written, funny, witty, heart reckoning and steamy just in the right amount.
"She had been successful in her endeavors and, at the still-ripe age of two and twenty, was widely considered a wallflower on her way to becoming a proper spinster."
Phoebe Beaumont is almost a spinster, and she wants to be a spinster. She believes that is what is expected of her, a worthless person, always a spectator, a companion, not a person with her own life. From an early age, she is considered just her cousin's companion, someone who is only there for others, and that leaves marks...
Her biggest dream, her absolute hope for the future is to live alone, in a little cottage, reading and writing, writing and reading, she doesn't want to find love, she wants to be a published author "I'll write like this someday, Phoebe promised herself, running her finger along the book's perfect binding. Someday, my name will be printed inside of a book just like this."
In her perfect life she will dream and write about love not actually living it, but Catherine, her funny and loving cousin, doesn't think the same "I'm simply saying that I don't understand how you can read those stories and claim you have no wish to find love in your own life", but Phoebe retorts "I believe it. Still, it is not meant for me. I am an observer of love, not a participant."
"He knew what the scandal sheets wrote about him. He knew what people whispered. It was uncouth, vulgar even, for an earl to be a businessman, let alone an extremely successful one"
Alex, Lord Westmore, is an earl, a brooding and serious tycoon who from an early age understood that one day he would receive a great responsibility, what he wasn't realizing was that with this responsibility came great financial problems. He had to think "outside the box" and turn the situation in his family's favour. So he became a businessman, a profitable businessman, and no, society didn't like his choices!
Financial difficulties resolved, he knew that one day he would have to resolve his countess issue... "but he was waiting for something... different. Not love, necessarily. He was not a romantic" But Alex was a good, human, caring and funny person too! (the scene where he wants to know if she has been eating, so sweet!)
Will Phoebe be just a participant in love?! Will Alex be happy with a real countess? I don't think so, nor do you! It's just that...
"When their eyes met, her heartbeat sped up. His gaze was dark and penetrating, and there was something familiar about it, as if she knew this man, yet she was sure they had not met. I would have remembered him, she thought."
"She was intriguing, He was rarely intrigued." What's not to like about that? I do love a good intrigue! Can seven days placate the feelings they have for each other? Will this deal be sufficient?
"Take a risk." Will she take the risk?! And the icing on the cake: “It was so wrong, it was right.” Read and find out the story! ;)
I really enjoyed...
The chemistry between Phoebe's and Alex.
The friends! Looking forward for their storys :).
The funny interchanges "Yes," he agreed solemnly. "I'm afraid you must."
That the story took its time, the plot takes place over a few years and not just in two weeks, I think it's a good change in the HR landscape
The historical concerns about the time, the railway, the social changes, the economy, the progress are well explored.
I didn't like it so much...
"Mercifully, her legs opened." Too fast, Phoebe, too fast, Alex!!!
Regarding the hot passages, I think that, as is usual in HR, it always happens too quickly. And I sincerely believe that with all the restrictions the society has, and although the mc may be a well-resolved woman, she will always have some problems only after a kiss, to see it through to the end. I don't know if it's me, but I always find these passages difficult to understand and believe.
Another thing that I found strange were the very modern expressions that this author uses in the story, expressions like “But I'm not blind” or “passive-aggressive”, I don’t know, it seems out of place.
Waiting anxiously...
"That is my betrothed," Olivia replied flatly."
Thank you to NetGalley and Colette Perry for allowing me to read this book. I hope it's a success!

Lord Westmore is a wealthy man in need of a wife. Phoebe Beaumont craves independence and isn’t like every other female in this story.
A scandal takes place and Phoebe is, somehow, involved and takes the fall for it. There is a chance meeting between the two and Lord Westmore comes to her with a proposition. Feelings get tangled up between the two and honesty isn’t really Phoebe’s thing.
The only thing I had an issue with is the dialect of this historical romance. If it was set in a regency time period, then the conversations need to follow suit with that era.
It was a cute romance. I feel like it gives off a “forbidden fruit” vibe and I’m here for every bit of it.
Special thanks to #NetGalley, #CollettePerri, and #VictoryEditing for this #ARC to review. Publication date is set for June 15, 2024.
Whew I have rarely read a book that made me want to slap the heroine at least twice!!
Phoebe Beaumont is a poor relation and cousin to Catherine but treated as her companion!
Catherine is gracious and beautiful and loves Phoebe as her sister!
Catherine makes a dreadful mistake and Phoebe takes the burden to secure her future!
Phoebe reputation is shredded just after meeting the reclusive, enigmatic Lord Alex Stanton Earl of Westmore! Alex is very wealthy and makes no secret that he hates Ton events and works for a living!
He literally almost ran over and killed Phoebe! He decides to investigate her background and attends his first and almost last social function!
Phoebe is ruined because she did not trust Richard to do right by Catherine because of a scandal not of her own making!
Alex is open and honest with Phoebe and she keeps secrets! He gives her chance after chance to tell the truth and she does not! She seems to think she can “fix” things herself she can’t and often makes matters worse!
She is supposedly beautiful and intelligent and even writes successful books!
She has trust issues and Alex never actually says how he feels and neither does she!?
When she finally does try to make amends for her foolish behavior it seems to be too late? Is it? Can Alex forgive her for stomping on his heart when he didn’t know he had one to give?
Bravo!
My first book by Collette Perri and it was really, really good.
I loved Alex. Practical, determined, loving and he knows his mind. What he wants he gets and not in an abrasive underhanded way, but with determination, loyaly and support.
Phoebe was a little bit of a hit or miss at first. A little bit too naive, too matyrish and a bit of an island. Over the story, she learns to trust, those around her and herself, learns to lean and learns her self worth.
Well written and the steam and attraction was realistic. I also loved the duke.
Tropes: MFC's reputation ruined; MC's get together at a house party
Steam level: 3ish
First in a series
2.5 stars rounded up. This is best described as a debut HR by an author who is still developing her voice and sense of style. Much of the dialog and behavior read as if this is a contemporary romance and not a book set during the Regency period, and the characterization needs some work. Characters run hot/cold and are inconsistent between scenes, and there are overly repeated words/phrases. I wanted to like the MFC more, but she makes foolish decisions in the second half and frequently puts herself in the position of being a martyr, which is a pet peeve of mine.
Bottom line: passable; needs a bit of polishing.
The PINING. A Summer to Surrender has some exceptional MMC pining, and I devoured every page of it. What a wonderful read from Collette Perri, a new-to-me author!
I really enjoyed reading this book and I gave it 4.5 stars. As much as it wasn't fully it did give second chance romance with how some of the things played out. Also you can never go wrong with a MMC who is obsessed with the FMC. It definitely was like Bridgerton but better in my opinion. I feel like it right the right about of spice for a regency era book. If you like Bridgerton I would definitely recommend reading this.
If you are looking for a quick historical romance I would recommend this book. The writing was very easy to get into and I finished it in a day.
A brand new recently romance that is one of my favourites in the genre so far. The characters all felt like real people with real hopes and concerns. It’s nice and well paced and kept me engaged throughout. An easy read that only took a few hours to get through. There’s a bit of spice but not a huge amount. There are a few things that don’t entirely fit with the time period but not enough to be distracting.
I’ll definitely look forward to reading more from this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
This historical romance novel was a delightful debut read, skillfully navigating time jumps to craft a compelling narrative. Lord Westmore's business-focused demeanor clashed intriguingly with Lady Phoebe's independent spirit, creating a dynamic and engaging romance. Phoebe's backstory added depth to her character, although her selflessness sometimes bordered on the excessive. Despite minor issues, the novel delivered a satisfying happily ever after. I'm eagerly anticipating future releases from this talented author. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75/6.
🌶️🌶️🌶️/5.
This was a delightful read even when there were some time jumps ( every few months) in the beginning. Why did I like the time jumps? Because it started with meaningful stuff and not things that a character was doing that was irrelevant to the story if that makes sense. It also led us to where the romance needed to be in order to commence in a way because otherwise this story would've been another one entirely if they got involved when they met, either because of their circumstances at the times or because of where each character was at that point in their lives. It wouldn't have been as good as it is. I'm also impressed by this author since it's her debut book and I'm very excited for her next release.
Alex, Lord Westmore, is a business man first and foremost which is frowned upon by the ton. He doesn't care what others in society think about him, which I loved, and his focus is on building his empire and making it even more profitable than it is. Until he almost crashes against Lady Phoebe. I actually loved their first encounter and Phoebe definitely left an impression on Alex and because he isn't easily impressed especially by women, he just had to figure out why this Lady had such an impact on his mind.
I liked that he didn't shy away from the feelings Phoebe evoked in him as they were learning more and more about each other and later when they started their little deal.
I loved that once he "tasted" her, he knew there was no going back to a life where she wasn't in it and he went all in even when he never even pondered marriage. One thing you must know about Alex is that once he wants something or someone, he does everything in his power to get it. No matter what it takes or what society might think.
Phoebe is an orphan and her aunt took her in when she was very little but because of her mother's marriage, her reputation was sullied and she would never have a husband and was destined to be a wallflower. She knew that and was okay with that because she never wanted a place in society and she just wanted to make money on what she loved to do the most and be able to have a home of her own. Until she meets Lord Westmore at a party.
I loved her! She was ambitious, direct, smart and kind.
I do think she gave a bit too much of herself to her cousin without thinking of herself. I didn't like parts where Catherine, her cousin, seemed like she took and took from her and never really acknowledged what Phoebe wanted. It was always what she wanted and Phoebe just went along with it. Phoebe was also very selfless to her detriment sometimes so I don't put all the blame on the cousin.
I loved the new friends she made along the way and I'm excited for their stories.
I liked how they finally had their hea although the fact that it took so long for Phoebe to come to terms with the fact that she didn't mind being a Countess if she could have Alex as a husband was a bit frustrating to me. However I believe she meant to go to him before she received the package and I liked that she was the one that her feelings on the table so to speak and I liked even more that Alex didn't give anything away until she did. That whole interaction was as it was supposed to be.
I loved them and I can't wait to hopefully see them in future books.
* I read an arc of this book. *
A Summer to Surrender is a great regency romance read that is easy to consume and left me feeling satisfied. It hits all of the boxes for a romance like this-primary characters that are fully developed, supporting characters that are endearing or easy to loathe, and a pace that is quick enough to keep me turning pages without losing the detail that keeps me invested.
Alex and Phoebe are meant from each other and feel that "zing" from the beginning. But Phoebe's commitment to her family and some misguided decisions may keep them a part. Following the twists and turns to a satisfying ending (ha! see what I did there?) there is a mild amount of spice, a ton of heartfelt moments and a story that was easy to enjoy.
The one complaint I would have is some of the language and terms used took me out of what was supposed to be the regency era and the Ton. For example: "Scarfing down a croissant..." Oof.
This book got better as it went on and was a readable novel. For the most part however, the narrative was limited to a house party and therefore had limited scope. Beyond certain period references to housing, clothing and manners there was little to reference it to the regency period. I was expecting more historical context and perhaps more explanation of the social environment whether in city or country.
This book is great!! The storyline and characters are well developed and interesting. I became so engrossed in the book that I finished it in one evening!
First novel from this author and I really enjoyed it. I am so impressed with authors and their talent. This book started a little slow for me but once the action started, it really started moving. Sacrifice is the name of the game and the plot of this story was one I had not read before. Bravo, Collette, for tackling such a sticky wicket and doing it with compassion and understanding. The whole cast of characters are fantastic. You can tell Alex and Phoebe are meant for each other from the beginning. I admit I did tear up at the end, fabulous ending. An amazing first book and I look forward to their friends’ book (got a tiny glimpse in this one).
Absolutely loved Phoebes nature form start to finish. Great chemistry between her and Alex. Devoured the book in about 10 hours with small breaks ♥️
Thank you NetGalley. Phoebe is a young woman who thinks she doesn't want a husband or children. She wants to write novels and that is all she wants. When her cousin finds herself in trouble for having gone for some fresh air the night her engagement is to be announced Phoebe tells everyone is was her out there with the cad. The cousin goes on to get married and takes Phoebe into her home. They are invited to a week long party at an earl's home. Alex is taken with her right away and can't think of anything but Phoebe. But she has her future all set on writing and living alone. Is that really what she wants? Maybe not.
