A Couple Cooks
Author: Sonja Overhiser + Alex Overhiser
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a fantastic cookbook! I really enjoyed how it encourages couples to cook together - as someone who struggles with delegation in the kitchen this is a major plus for me. The recipes all sound delicious and feature beautiful photographs. I also really liked how it had tips for date nights and hosting parties. The sample menus are really helpful as well! This book would make a great wedding/engagement gift.
I will definitely be purchasing this cookbook as soon as its released!
Thanks to NetGalley, Chronicle Books, and Sonja Overhiser + Alex Overhiser for an advanced copy of the book. All thoughts in this review are my own.
I really enjoyed browsing through this cookbook, and tagged a great number of recipes I want to try out. I loved the structure of this, and liked the little notes of who can do what during the duo-cooking process. The stories were nice to have, but I was really drawn to the recipes and the pictures themselves, which was the main pull to pick up a cookbook, right?
The recipes were simple enough, and the overall collection was nice to have. I definitely wanted to journey through cooking through these recipes; even if you're doing on your own, it would still be fun to try any of the dishes. Great addition to the cookbook obsessions that I have lol!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC of this great and fun cookbook. All opinions are my own.
It's not often you can find recipes that lets you get down to 2 servings! This was such a fun cook book! I loved the details about food bringing people together and the fun stories the author shared. I really loved the well-placed images to help picture the recipe. The recipes may be geared for a couple to cook together but each recipe can easily translate to a family or friends cooking together. There are easy ways to increase the service sizes to accommodate more.
I was surprised there were so many meatless dishes but the few we did already try out were absolutely delicious! I look forward to making more!
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
This is such a perfect cookbook, especially for couples who are just entering the stage of cooking together (because there is a "where to start" section!!)! My partner and I have cooked a bunch, and I thought we had a good system, but it's was mostly both of us cutting and washing food, then I do most of the cooking and he cleans the prep dishes. So we weren't ever actually cooking together. I love that this book provides suggestion on food pairings, ways to cook together, vegan diets, and how to store leftovers. It's a really helpful cookbook! I can't wait for it to come out in September so I can purchase a hard copy!!
AHHHHHHHH! Chronicle Books, you are too good to me! I am so excited for this one and can't wait to get down and dirty (with flour and oil) and all of the baking ingredients necessary to make an amazing meal -- with MY HUSBAND! A Couple Cooks by Sonja Overhiser and Alex Overhiser is set to hit shelves on September 17, 2024, and I cannot wait.
This book is a really great idea! The recipes are clear and easy to understand. Throughout the book, the authors include wine pairings, tips for how to cook together, and how long it will keep in the fridge. I also REALLY liked that each was marked with the type of recipe it is - diary-free, pescatarian, vegetarian, etc. As someone who is dairy-free, knowing this immediately is really helpful. I'll definitely be trying these out with my boyfriend this summer! There's also beautiful color images of some of the recipes!
Thank you Netgalley, the publisher and the authors for the advanced readers copy of this publication.
A Couple Cooks showcases their exceptional culinary expertise, exemplified through the ease of their recipes, insightful tips, thoughtful ingredient choices, and captivating imagery. The authors have crafted a collection of recipes that are not only delicious but also accessible to cooks of all levels, thanks to their straightforward instructions and minimalistic approach. The cookbook is full of invaluable tips and tricks that enhance the cooking experience, guiding readers through various techniques and flavor combinations. What truly sets A Couple Cooks apart is their emphasis on wholesome, quality ingredients, elevating each dish's taste and nutritional value.
I really like how this book was organized. It had a shape/color for partner 1 and partner 2, showing who does what. The recipes were delicious and the pictures were beautiful!
I absolutely loved that this cookbook separates tasks for each person. To not have to divide tasks is a game changer. There were recipes from all different cuisines for all types of meals. It would be the perfect gift for newlyweds!
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this arc ebook in exchange for an honest review.
I always love trying new cookbooks and the premise of A Couple Cooks sparked my interest. I love the idea of incorporating my spouse into the kitchen and working together to make a meal. The authors do a wonderful job with creating steps on who does what job and I haven’t seen that before in a cookbook. It helped develop a rhythm and direction rather than just shooing him away or micromanaging him around, and that’s basically killjoy in the kitchen for anyone.
The book is divided into different sections. One for everyday dinners, one for date night dinners, one designed for large gatherings, another for breakfast, side dishes, appetizers, breads, desserts, and drinks. I tried making some of the dinner recipes and it wasn’t a hit in my house, but I’m not giving up.
Thank you NetGalley and Chronicle Books for this ARC.
I'm buying this helpful book so my husband and I can learn to cook together, using the 100 delicious recipes for all kinds of meals. Can our kitchen accommodate two? Yes!
Didn’t really care for this. Not many recipes I would try as most of them are not very healthy. The random photos of a window or table were odd. If you need more photos add more prep photos or food photos. I’m not sure people are buying cookbooks for table styling ideas but maybe that’s just me. I found the couple setup odd at best. It usually leaves one person with not much to do but stand around.
Pros: I think this book would be a perfect gift to give at a wedding shower along with something off the registry to use in the kitchen. I loved that the recipes included instructions on what each person could be doing to bring the meal together--this helps guide the cooks to actually cook together! The recipes are also accessible to cooks of different skill levels and offer substitutions to fit different dietary needs. The photographs in this book are colorful and make the food look so appetizing.
Cons: I made the mistake of reading a cookbook without having something to snack on!
Thank you to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the opportunity to read this book.

There are tons of amazing recipes I am excited to try and an amazing cookbooks to use with your significant other.

An aesthetically pleasing cookbook to read and work with. It is written in a very clear and concise way that is easy to follow along with.
The idea of cooking with a significant other or spouse can be a romantic and lovely date night idea….until you get it the kitchen with them. And they do things differently, and out of order, and are unconsciously in the way. I love the way this cookbook tackles that from the start! Giving each person specific instructions to make the process simple and enjoyable.
Each recipe is written to the perfect portion size for two, with several dietary options that are clearly specified i.e. gluten free, vegan, etc.
As an added bonus, I really appreciated the sample menus in the back of the book.
Wonderful cookbook anchored on the idea of partners and couples cooking together in the kitchen. While the book is geared toward romantic couples, I can see it being used by families, friends, and communities to prepare meals together. This book promotes the idea that good food cultivates relationships and community. The recipes are beautifully photographed, accessible, and arranged by every day dinners, cooking for two, gatherings, breakfast, sides, baking, appetizers, sweets and drinks. So many favorites to choose from, but my go-to recipes are the Quick & Cozy Chickpea Curry, Seared Tuna Steaks with Chimichurri, and Warm Goat Cheese with Jam.
Thank you #NetGalley and #ChronicleBooks for the opportunity to review this advanced reader copy.
Cookbooks have recently become a fun thing to browse at. Now that I’m inching out of baby phase and have a little more time for that part of life. And my daughter absolutely loves to help cook. So with summer around the corner, I wrote down some fun ideas our family can try out. It was very fun to recieve some advance copies of these cookbooks. 🥗🍔🌮🍤🍪🧁🧀🥚🍇🥯
Gathering Boards by Sarah Tuthill was making my mouth water. I love a good charcuterie board, and this book was chalked full of ideas, how to lay the board out, different seasonal boards. I want this book for a coffee table book because the pictures were so vibrant and beautiful. It made me want to text all my girl pals and plan a patio night. 100 Afternoon Sweets by Sarah Kieffer made me walk to the pantry and grab my secret stash of chocolate. I have so many post its for this one to make with my daughter this summer. I always run into the problem of never knowing what to bring to a girls night, or family cookout. But this book had SO many yummy treats that anyone can make. The Crab Pot Cookbook by The Griffin Family….this was hands down a beautiful and such a fun family effort cookbook! I LOVE seafood, and tell my husband that we must retire or visit frequent the east coast so I can have my lobster. I live in the Midwest, but let me tell you, I am bringing this cookbook out for some fun summer nights! I love the explanations, the creative new things I’ve never heard of, and it was so beautifully put together. It made me want to meet this family for how fun it was. A Couples Cookbook by Sonja Overhiser and Alex Overhiser was the most precious couples cookbook I’ve read. I received many for my wedding gifts, but this tops them all. I loved the introduction full of their story, and the pictures of them throughout the book. The meals looked so fun, and easy, and it was so beautifully put together. My husband and I always say it will be fun to make more than our five staple kids dinners eventually. @acouplecooks
I love the idea of bonding as a couple through cooking together. This is a chunky cookbook with incredible photography and so many fun recipes to try. I especially love the section dedicated to cooking for two - it's tough to get those proportions right without running out or having a ton of leftovers! This would make an excellent engagement/wedding/housewarming gift for a couple and I'm excited to start spending more time in the kitchen with my husband making these recipes.
