This is a really cute story about a witch who just wants to go back to her hometown and re-open her grandmothers Sandwich shop. she wasn't supposed to get involved in a feud between Vampires and the Fey. she wasn't supposed to have to deal with a broken mirror and a broken promise that could lead to a terrible war. she certainly didn't expect to be given an even stranger gift than the magic she already had. she's being tossed into a world of secrets, mysteries, and maybe a little found family along the way.
This was a really cute book, I'm not gonna lie about that, but it just didn't hit the mark for me. the pacing was a little off, and over half of the book was just building up to the point. if you like a slow paced book, this one is definitely well written, but it felt like there where three separate stories being mashed together. she has to open a sandwich shop. but she also has to fix a mirror. but she also has to find out why the Vampires and the Fey are fighting. it was just a lot of circling around different plots and i got annoyed and a little bored. it's definitely got a good premise, and it's definitely got really good scenes, likable characters, and an intriguing mystery, but it wasn't a book for me.
All she wants to do is reopen her dear late aunt’s sandwich shop in peace, but as soon as Zelda sets foot back in NYC after years away, she and her unique copycat magic are immediately whisked into the middle of a conflict involving the witches, vampires, and fae.
This is exactly my type of comfort urban fantasy, and after finishing book 1 I immediately got the rest of the series (and her related [Midlife Elementals](https://amzn.to/4h6eom3) series!)
It's was just an ok read for me. I was expecting more coziness and less vampires. I also thought it could have been 100 pages longer to give it more time to build up the backstory and plot. I don't think I'll be continuing in the series.
This book was a perfect cosy witchy read so if that is your vibe I would 100% pick this book up. It is an enjoyable and entertaining story and it has a lot of magic and madness within the story itself.
I've been on a spooky halloween book kick and I've read a bunch of witch/vampire books and this one is by far the best out there! I absolutely loved it. Loved the characters, was consumed by the magic and the suspense. I have a list of halloween/fall books that I want to read and I'm actually stopping the list to buy the rest of the books in this series so that I can keep reading about the amazing, magical world Kate Moseman created and the characters I've grown to love so much! Can't wait to see what happens next and can't recommend this one enough!
This is a fun paranormal read! I love the matter of fact way the book introduces vampires, fae etc. Plus, I’m always interested in books with chefs in them! 4 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley, I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The first thing that i liked was that our main character was little older (don't come at me, mother, i know you are still young but for me 40s is still older), and i loved the fact that her buisness was sandwitches - like that was an interesting twist.
I also lovet that we didn't only see some witches, but also other 'species' - i love books with characters like this!
What i didn't enjoy that much - was the love interest. I don't know why, i just wasn't vibing with it. And that's okay i think, i still could enjoy this book.
We didn't get much of the side characters, but i hope it will change the more we dive into the series (I really hope!).
If you like witchy books you should give this one a try!
Gorgeous cover, colorful characters, and a fast paced read. I really enjoyed the world, the humor and the side characters.
This was so different than the things I've been reading. This is a cozy fantasy with no obvious romance and a tall, middle aged woman as the main character. It read like a rom com with more fantasy elements than magical realism. The magic system was creative.
Read this if you like:
Vampires and witches
Found family
New York City
Loveable dogs
Quick fun read!
I love the paranormal aspect in the story and the shop.
Our FMC is so fun hahah. This has a comedy feel as well and I will be continuing the series in the future to continue on with our FMC.
I wonder what will happen next!!
Zelda is moving to Manhattan to take over Grandma's sandwich shop. She will have a nice, quiet life....just kidding!!!! Zelda is not of the Blessed (vampires) but she is approached by one that wants to make a deal. Zelda's grandma was a Witch that sealed the Gentry away for many years, but that seal won't stay sealed away without quite the production.
Jester, Zelda's poodle, stole the show. He is quite the little stinker and he had me giggling several times while reading. Did I mention the hot ex? Daniel, who I believe still has quite the feelings for Zelda. He also doesn't like that Berron is helping Zelda with the restoration of the sandwich shop. Their bickering is comical.
Overall this was a very cute book and I love how Jester had such a big part in Zelda's story. Thank you @netgalley for my copy to read in exchange for my honest review!
Thank you, NetGalley and Fortunella Press for this free copy for review. I really enjoyed this book. Zelda moved to Manhattan to her family's old restaurant but gets drawn into the magical world. Zelda finds she needs to use what she's learned from her grandmother both the magic and the recipes to make a new life in New York. This is the start of a fun new series and I look forward to reading the next book.
This one isn’t a new release – but has had a bit of a makeover to chime with the current vibe for more uplifting fantasy adventures. Zelda is an enjoyable protagonist, who decides to return to New York and make a new start by reopening her grandmother’s sandwich shop. While she has enough edges to be enjoyable, she isn’t too angst-ridden or weighed down by her past – which is a pleasant change as far as fantasy heroines are concerned.
I do like her relationship with her ex-boyfriend. There is still enough heat between them to make their continued friendship completely believable. This contrasts with his ongoing interest in Zelda’s magical powers to pull him back into her life, alongside a nice slice of mutual exasperation.
There is also sufficient threat so this one doesn’t become too cosily safe – urban fantasy, after all, is defined by adventure and danger. The vampires are well depicted, with a variety of characters within the community with different ideas of how vampires should be perceived in the future. And the main villain is nicely nasty – I really liked to hate him.
All in all, this is an entertaining, enjoyable story with lots of warmth and heart alongside the inevitable threat and danger. And the bonus – the second book is already available. I’ll be getting hold of it shortly, as I definitely want to know what happens next. While I obtained an arc of Spells and Sandwiches from the publishers via Netgalley, the opinions I have expressed are unbiased and my own.
8/10
A fast paced quirky book full of fun and fantasy.
This is the first book in the westside witches series and follows Zelda a witch with unusual magic who hasn't used her powers since the passing of her grandmother. Zelda decides to pack up her life and relocate to New York where she plans to take over her grandmothers old sandwich shop but when she arrives she encounters her new vampire landlord who will provide her with free rent on the shop in exchange for a favour. Adventure and fun soon ensues.
I loved this book and devoured it within a couple of hours, it was super fast paced and there was always something interesting going on within the story, the book was filled with chaos, the paranormal, found family and of course sandwiches. It was a brilliant first instalment and I can't wait to read the rest of the series and explore what else Kate Moseman has to offer.
Highly recommend to people who love fantasy and need a fun, unputdownable palate cleanser.
This book was sush a breath of fresh air! I really was enchanted by it!
It's a paranormal story, that sucked me in and made me stay glued to the pages until the very end, with quite a few moments of laugh along the way.
Zelda is a witch, but ever since her grandmother's passing hasn't used her magic. She moves to NY to reopen her grandmother's Sandwich shop, but as she arrives she has more than renovations to consider. A powerfull vampire needs her help and her magic to repair a magic mirror, to prevent war between vampires and fae. Zelda accepas to help and gets involved with some dangerous people but with the help from her new (and old) friends, and her poodle, they manage to help restore the right balance and open her restaurant!
If in the beggining I thought I was going to miss the romance part in the story, I couldn't be more wrong! The story dosn't need it, as is perfect as it is!
After ending this one I'll be buying the rest of the series! I want to continue reading Zelda's adventures for a long time!
Spells and Sandwiches is the first book in the West Side Witches series. This cozy fantasy follows Zelda as she moves back to Manhattan to reopen her grandmothers sandwich shop. When her landlord who is also a vampire offers her free rent for life in exchange for a favor, Zelda must use her unusual powers to continue the work her grandmother started.
This was such a fun book to listen to. The narrator did a great job giving each character their own voice and I plan on listening to the other books in this series once they are available. This book did leave me with some questions, and I am excited to see what is next for Zelda and her group of friends.
Thank you NetGalley and Kate Moseman for the opportunity to review Spells and Sandwiches. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book was very well written, the flow and plot were very catching. With magic and just a little chaos
✨rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is an older release, I was given a free copy in exchange for my honest review. I chose this book because was really interested in a light, fun read. Spells and Sandwiches is the first of a series about a New York City Witch named Zelda. Zelda has just moved home to reopen her late grandmother's sandwich shop, but is immediately confronted by a vampire who requests use of her magic, in exchange for free rent on the shop. Zelda finds herself in the midst of a vampire argument over how to fix a broken mirror that has kept the fae out of New York for a quarter century, all while trying to renovate her shop.
This book hit the ground running, and it just kept going. It was still a fun, lighthearted read (for the most part). I think I'd definitely read the rest of the series to find out what happens next for Zelda and her friends. I give it a solid 3⭐️. I liked the ease and fun of the read, but felt like their could have been a little more character development. Though as book one, maybe that's the point! We have to come back for more!
Thank you Netgalley, Kate Moseman and Fortunella Press for this fun read!
This is a fun and fast-paced paranormal cozy mystery. I had a lot of fun following Zelda around as she was trying to help Victorine with the mirror that has kept the fae locked in their realm. I knew I was going to have a good time when we first met Zelda dressed as a Disney princess.
I'm excited to continue this series and see Zelda get her sandwich shop up and running, Along with what I'm sure will me be many paranormal hijinks and a super hunky love interest
This was a short and sweet palate cleanser. Zelda, a witch who can absorb powers, moves to NYC after inheriting her grandmother’s sandwich shop. An old, powerful vampire approaches her about repairing a mirror that Zelda’s grandmother has once spelled to keep the Fae locked away.
The supporting characters brought so much to this story’s. And the narrator was great! I listened to this in one sitting.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for my copy!
