The day the silent one of the team comes and asks Andy for a favor, something he has never done before, of course Andy says yes to Marcus before he even knows he is now the Lawyer for a mass shooter. But there is much more to this story and the K team must figure it all out and fast before Nick is found guilty. But all Nick cares about is the pup he was going to adopt from Andy’s Tara foundation. This book is so full of action and suspense that the Author and the wonderful voice actor pass on the reader. They are such a team I Home they stay together for a long time.

This is the first book in the series for me. I really enjoyed it. Although it involves a mass murder, it's a light murder mystery/legal story. A lawyer who wants to be retired, but who takes cases where he has reason to believe the accused is not guilty is the main character in this story. This is exactly the situation in this book.

This is a complex case where an employee of a large law firm appears to have been the murderer, but he claims he was kidnapped and held for days, only being released after the murders have been committed. His story rings true and other pieces of the situation don't seem to fit.

There is gentle humor, clever writing, and a great narrator for this audio book. I will be on the lookout for more book in this series.

Two reasons I keep coming back to this series – adorable covers and Grover Gardner as the narrator. It doesn’t even really matter what the mystery is. Wannabe-retired lawyer Andy Carpenter is called in to defend a dog lover who is accused of a crime they didn’t commit. Andy and his team find out who the real bad guy is. Andy’s client doesn’t end up in jail. This time around it’s a young man accused of killing 6 people at his workplace.

The plot is a bit complicated, but all of the regulars are back, human and canine, to help sort it out. Andy is his sarcastic, funny, in real life would be obnoxious but works well in fiction, self. As is often the case, the solution is bigger than I really like in my mysteries. I like more personal motives and less organized crime, but it’s not out of the ordinary for a Carpenter book and I do enjoy the characters and humor enough to make up for it.

Another Andy Carpenter book narrated by the great Grover Cleveland.
First a word on the narration if you listen to the audio. Grover Cleveland narrates the Fireside Series and reads us many classics
that way. As far as I know, he has also narrated all the Andy Carpenter books. He has a wonderful voice and is an accomplished
narrator. However, I found myself wishing it was a different narrator. I think of Andy Carpenter as a late middle aged man sitting by
a fire. That is so far from the truth. I doubt, the author would switch and maybe others love hearing Cleveland but just sayin'

Dog Day Afternoon was more engrossing than the last two books. Andy Carpenter is a wealthy lawyer who loves dogs, founded a successful rescue dog foundation named after his beloved dog, Tara, and doesn't do law all that often. He accepts a case because his friend, Marcus, asks him too. And they are somehow connected at the hip. He is to defend Nick Williams, a young man that Marcus took under his wing and found work for him. Nick is now accused of murdering six of the people he works with and all signs make him look guilty.

There were so many layers to this who dunit. They were all believable and kept me guessing till close to the end. David Rosenfelt has a devious mind and comes up with incredibly clever stories. I really enjoyed this one.

Andy Carpenter, dog lover and reluctant lawyer has a rule - he never takes a case unless he’s sure the client is innocent. However, when Marcus Clark, associate and a man who has saved Andy’s life numerous times, asks him to defend a friend accused of multiple murders, Andy feels he has no choice, despite the viciousness of the crime and all the damning evidence against the man, to break his rule.

Dog Day Afternoon is the 29th cozy mystery novel in the Andy Carpenter Mysteries series by David Rosenfelt and it remains as fun, fast and engaging as ever. The characters are all well-drawn especially Andy who is very likeable, smart, witty and self-effacing. A great entry in this long-running series that grabbed my interest immediately and kept it throughout. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Grover Gardner who does an outstanding job.

I had forgotten about this wonderful series. This is book 29 yea that is correct 29 in this series so far and it is still going strong. I need to go back and get caught up on the other books I have missed. The lovely thing is that these books can be read as a stand-alone or in any order and still enjoy them. This audiobook was narrated by Grover Gardner. Grover does an amazing job with all the characters and keeps you wanting to listen to more.
So why did I want to read this book? Let's start with the adorable cover it caught my eye right off. Second, the name is also so cute. And last but not least the series which I am familar with but didn't realize I had missed so many of them. Andy is a snarky quick-witted lawyer who loves dogs. Just that one line and I would read the book. I hope Andy and Marcus and the crew have many more adventures.
Thank you to Netgalley, and McMillan Audio for the ARC. This review is my honest opinion

Mysteries!! I never read them and then when I do I’m the surprised pikachu face when I enjoy them. This one was cute, and of course there’s a dog on the cover so duh. I liked how everything unraveled. I was on my toes the whole time trying to figure out what was happening, and I liked Andy’s relationships with the people (and dogs) around him.

This book is the perfect throwback to great detectives of the past; think Sam Spade or Joe Friday from the old Dragnet radio show. Just the facts, Ma'am. The story here is told in that same no-nonsense, simply state the case manner, and it's absolutely perfect. What it lacks in terms of character development, it completely makes up for in it's descriptions of the crime and it's aftermath. It doesn't rely on gory details, but rather gives a straight forward account of what happened. From the first, it's action-packed complete with fight scenes, seriously bad guys, danger around every corner, and everything else you could possibly want in a good whodunnit; and it's dry, somewhat sarcastic humor is not to be missed. The fact that Andy Carpenter, our narrator and main character, is a lawyer rather than a detective just adds one more layer to an already good story. We don't stop at solving the crime; we also get to sit in on the trial. This is a great installment in a long-running series, and is sure to delight mystery fans from all over.

Another charmer from David Rosenfelt.

The titles and covers are still ridiculous, but the plots, dialogue, and characters are all tight.

My favourite moments generally involve Marcus and/or the pub scenes with his friends, and, while there’s defintely a formulaic feel to these mysteries, I’ll keep adding to my collection, for as long as he keeps cranking them out.

Thanks to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, and Macmillan Audio for this droll ARC.

This has been my favorite of the Andy Carpenter mysteries so far, having read them out of order (1,2,7,15,20,27 and now 29). While I always enjoy the wit and cheek of Andy in and out of the courtroom, I liked the fact that for this one, the verdict wasn't the end of the story. So often in stories like this, the verdict is the end of the road. Sure we may get a chapter or two of celebration, dependent upon whether we went into the story rooting for the killer to be brought to justice, or, as in the case of Andy Carpenter mysteries, seeing an innocent defendant go free. But in this instance, the verdict wasn't the end of the story. We didn't get the big "aHA" moment until after the jury deliberated, and I personally found that insanely satisfying as a break from the norm.
As for narrator Grover Gardner, he has perfected the quippy sarcastic delivery of Andy's arguments in the courtroom and his cowardly, self-deprecating humor outside of it. Rosenfelt has created a colorful cast of characters that without whom, you would find Andy insufferable, though his love and compassion for dogs (the main reason I picked up the first book I read in this series) doesn't completely put the character into the "despicable lawyer" category.
This is a series great for fans of Sue Grafton, Carl Hiaasen and Craig Johnson and I for one, hope Andy Carpenter "never" retires.

This was an easy and quick read. A light hearted cozy type mystery with dogs 🐕. Great palate cleanser between reads. I enjoyed the narration and thought it was perfect for Andy's character. This wasn't my first Rosenfelt novel, and I still enjoyed it, but it did have a bit more language than I remember in other books. It wasn't a ton, but there was enough to make me stop and think about the others I've read. Thank you, NetGalley and MacMillan Audio, for the opportunity to listen and review this advanced copy.

Andy Carpenter is back again, and I could not be more delighted! His perfectly paced wit and snarky humor are so much fun to read. He is a brilliant lawyer who is balanced by his wife, a former cop, and other supporting characters from various backgrounds who just make me smile. In this case, Dog Day Afternoon, Marcus is a key figure. Not that he normally is not, he just gets more attention and more “words” spoken in this novel than maybe all the others combined! The case is a fascinating one with facets that are sure to throw you for a loop. The client, Nick, is a likeable and believable guy who is being set up for a mass murder. In true Andy Carpenter fashion, the shadows are exposed, and no stone left unturned to find the truth and deliver justice. I especially enjoyed listening to the audiobook narrated by Grover Gardner.

Cute

I love listening to these books while working in the yard. They are fast and nothing so crucial happens that it is a big deal if i miss a part. This one was no exception. I finished it a few days ago and I can only remember parts of the plot, basically the part that involves a fraud that has been used in the plot of many books by other authors over the years, but is still good.

It was a nice cozy mystery. There is plenty of humor and no gory killings. I can always count on enjoying the work by this author and this was no exception.

One issue, the narrator reads very, very slowly, with lots of dramatic pauses. I play these books at double speed, sometimes faster, and find them much more enjoyable.

3.5

I’m torn on this one. Is it similar to books one through 28 where there’s a murder that is very convincingly pinned on an innocent person who Andy has to be guilted into representing, only to prove the true conspiracy with a contract killer as the perpetrator at the final minute? Yes. Will I still listen to book 30? Yes I will.

Though this definitely follows the formula, I still liked this one and, though I can’t really explain why, there are some things I liked better than others. It seems to all take place in Paterson. Okay, so maybe the accused is held an hour away and the assassin is based in Chicago, but otherwise, it feels like everything‘s happening in his neighborhood and all of the people, for the most part, lived there too. We actually hear something from Marcus, although it must wear him out because he doesn’t say anything for the rest of the book after that, but he and Andy are communicating.

Once again, the basset hound is pigeonhole as the least loved or loving and is slow and lazy. I would love it if they had another book with a basset hound, maybe a girl that got Sebastian up and moving, who shows may be the more typical basset. Sure, they can be a little lazy, but they are the most friendly dog. Okay, I’ll give you that retrievers are pretty friendly too.

Grover Gardner did his usual great stick that is Andy Carpenter and all his shenanigans.

Those of us who have read all or most of the Andy Carpenter series are very familiar with Marcus and the lack of communication between Andy and Marcus. While it’s been gradually thawing over the last few books, in this one, Marcus takes a much larger role. Turns out, he sponsors young men in trouble. And now, one of his young men is in trouble and needs a lawyer.
Despite this being the 29th in the series, this book remains as fresh as the first. I love the characters, the humor and the intelligence of the plots. Yes, Rosenfelt relies on a formula. There’s always a dog, Andy is always reluctant to take the case, it always comes down to Andy having to figure out the actual criminal(s) while simultaneously having to juggle the actual court case. But he also has the ability to come up with unique situations every time. This time, there’s been a mass murder at a law firm. Six people are dead, but two people survive. And they both finger another employee, the young man mentioned above.
The book would work fine as a stand-alone. I’ve read several of the books out of order with no issues.
I listened to this and Grover Gardner is the perfect Andy.

Book Title: Dog Day Afternoon
Series: Andy Carpenter #29

Marcus Clark has known Laurie for many years and is now Andy’s bodyguard and has saved Andy’s life many times. He hardly ever speaks to Andy; he currently is mentoring young Nick Williams however is being accused of murder. Nick says he was kidnapped and held for several days, but doesn't know where, or by whom. Marcus approaches Andy and asks for help as he knows Nick did not commit murder.

If you are new to Andy, he is semi-retired as he came into a large inheritance. He loves dogs and has helped in establishing the Tara
Foundation named after his golden retriever Tara – trust me there is no other dog like Tara!!!
Andy typically only takes cases a dog involved. However, he always has and needs help from his wife Laurie as well ‘The K-Team’
~Marcus Clark and Corey Douglas - Corey and Laurie * former police officers. Sam Willis is also part of this group and is a super hacker
but employed as an accountant.
Together the K-Team will pull their resources in order to prove that Nick is innocent.

Although this novel is #29 in the Andy Carpenter series and #23 for me; I believe it can be read as a standalone. Reading just need a
little back ground information and are set to board the Andy train.
In addition to entertaining stories, I especially love narrator Grover Gardner. Author, David Rosenfelt has a great wit and Grover Gardner
delivers it so well!
Andy’s stories are always entertaining~ true they are formula driven ~ in addition to dogs; there will be courtroom drama (that I love as I grew up with Perry Mason and American Bandstand as my most favorite TV shows. – note I mentioned Perry Mason first!)
Back to Andy and his courtroom shenanigans – true it never disappoints! Next there will be a surprise twist, and hopefully a Victory dinner!!!
To me there is nothing wrong with this formula!!!

I believe this is one of the BEST in this series. True more nasty language than I believe necessary but the story is GREAT!
Want to thank NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this early Audiobook.

Thanks to MacMillan & NetGalley for providing an audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I'm always looking for a new cozy mystery series, and I've been meaning to check out David Rosenfelt. While these are not strictly cozy, they are as lighthearted as you can get describing a mass casualty event in an office building (6 people shot point blank with a silencer-equipped handgun in an everyday office building). Despite the depravity of the crime, the focus is on Andy Carpenter's efforts to defend the accused, who he comes to realize has been framed. This is especially delicious as the accused is a young man of color (this is not discussed but heavily implied) who is a mentee of Carpenter's friend/bodyguard Marcus and has recently applied to rescue a puppy from Carpenter's golden retriever rescue.

The plot is kind of complicated, but it's not a mess or anything. The motives become clear over time, and of course Andy's belief in his client and his own tenacity win the day. Andy prefers to work minimally, and then only when he feels certain his client is innocent, but he does seem to enjoy being a boil on the ass of his competitors, which is fun to read. His dry sense of humor is also very entertaining. I think I'll be using this series as a nice palate cleanser in between serious, gory thrillers. Surprisingly good, and Grover Gardner was also a pleasant surprise as a voice actor.
