I enjoyed My Mechanical Romance, so I was looking forward to another story of young, nerdy love and Twelfth Knight does NOT disappoint. The author captures the true brilliance and fun that was late 90s/early 00s teen movie adaptations of Shakespearean plays. Knowing that some teachers are choosing to show their students Baz Luhrmann's 1996 Romeo + Juliet as a pairing for when they teach the play, I think current teen readers will enjoy this just as much as I would have when I was a teen.

We've got sports, we've got dram, we've got tabletop gaming, and what sounds like a really fascinating MMORPG game (Twelfth Knight). Readers also get realistically flawed characters, a lot of snark and sass, and honest growing pains all wrapped up in characters loosely based on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. I laughed, I got a little teary-eyed, I spent A LOT of time yelling at Vi to just TELL JACK ALREADY.

Overall, this was a really fun read. Alexandra Palting and Kevin R. Free do a great job with the audiobook narration.

4.5 stars rounded up

I really enjoyed this book. I'm not a gamer, at all, but this book was so interesting and the way that Alexene explains the games doesn't feel like you're reading a textbook, but instead like one of your good friends is explaining one of their hobbies to you. I loved the banter between Vi and Jack, and I love that neither of them shrank themselves down for the other, but instead, together, realized that they didn't always have to be perfect or anything but themselves. I really loved this book. I think anyone who's looking for a cute YA rivals to lovers book, this is definitely for you.

Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillian young listeners for the audio ARC of this title in exchange for my honest review.

In this instance I was tasked with reviewing the audiobook specifically. Because of that it brought me to give only a 3 star review. If I was doing the prose itself it would have been a four as I think it was a fun coming of age story and personally I love roleplaying games.

However, the audio reading was awful. It completely took me out of the story several times and made me dislike characters. The voices she uses are cartoonish and the way she expresses things is annoying and grating. I felt bad for the male reader as he was fine but I was so annoyed with her that it impacted everything.

So bottom line? Buy the physical book when it comes out next week but run from the audio book.

O.M.G, this was a super cute quick read! I don't really have a lot to say about this book, but to just read it. I literally started and finished in one day.
A book with chapter name is a major plus in my eyes! Love, love, love a book with chapter names, and guess what? This book has chapter names.
The narrators did a great job bringing this story to life.

I really enjoyed Twelfth Knight! I donโ€™t tend to read as much YA as I used to, but I am so glad I had the opportunity to read this and even found it to be quite relatable in many ways. I loved both of the main characters, and appreciated how much we get to see them struggle and grow both internally and with each other. I enjoyed the incorporation of gaming/fair/convention experiences as seen through both perspectives. The romance element was super sweet and I was happy to be rooting for these characters.

The audio narration was perfect - both narrators were a great fit and the clarity, pacing, voices, and performance were really excellent.

This book is an adorable YA spin on Twelfth Night, which just happens to be my favorite Shakespeare play. The โ€œopposites attractโ€ romance is done well, and weโ€™ve got a well developed cast of characters. More than anything, this book really touches on and captures the feelings of loneliness and aimlessness we all felt as teenagers (and to be honest, as adults), and shows how itโ€™s okay to go outside your comfort zone and rely on others. There were a lot of familiar tropes and situations that are common with romantic novels, but it didnโ€™t feel tired. This was a cute coming of age story that I really enjoyed

Ok this was very Ya which is fine. I like the premises of the book, I like how it develop the characters growth. And how it went about some beliefs . Now I do feel at some points it got very convolute, and sometimes I wanted to strangle the character, it definitely shows. Overall I did enjoy it quite a bit . Definitely recommend.
