Now I never heard anyone say anything about the food in Philly being bad but there definitely is a lot of fear mongering when it comes to crime. And I like that this book dispels that for kids.
Author created a good sense of telling the history of a city by this manner. Elijah was not interested and afraid to visit the city of Philadelphia, but on the eve when he had to leave next, he got a dream. There he had been told all about the city's history and the importance of its presence in history of America.
Elijah heard bad thing about the city and didn't want to visit it anyway even with his father but after that dream he got intrigued to see it himself. By the childish thoughts of food wouldn't be good or people might be mean, later in that same dream author broke the stereotype which usually get stuck to the mind of visitors to any place.
Though, I'm not familiar to the place but I liked the way of telling the young readers in brief about the cities of USA. However, this could be more better with the intro to the city if been done via some big figure from history. Also, transportation of Elijah from his sleep to the dream was not so smooth, words could have been chosen well so the mystery of him watching all through his eyes which was only in his dream and not in reality would be kept long for young readers to keep attached. That would have given them more attention to keep for book till end.
I hope with coming books in series will be taken care of with such corrections. Overall, it was good read on small facts from history.
Elijah was kind of afraid to go sightseeing with his dad to the city of Philadelphia, but he fell asleep anyway. Better than a Tardis! In place of The Doctor there is Vinnie to show them the timeline and special things about Philadelphia. But was it all a dream?
Good series for getting friends and family to talk about their visits to a particular city.
The illustrations by Anh Bui are fun, brightly colorful, and clear.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone aged 4-104, but especially to a school, church library, or your local public library!
I requested and received a free temporary EARC on Adobe Digital Editions from Buckeye Muscle Media, LLC via NetGalley. Thank you!

I'll preface this by saying that I live in Philly, and I'm married to a proud Philadelphia-native.
My thoughts on this book are two-sided. I love the whole premise of "Elijah going to..." and having a "dream" about the place. It's a great way to teach kids fun things about different places. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this series and any other places Elijah goes!
But I have to question the author's premise of people from Philadelphia being mean and the food being weird. I'll acknowledge that the author dispels Elijah of this idea by the end, but I wonder at the use of it in the first place. Living in Philly, I know we have a stereotype of "no one likes us, we don't care," but I sincerely doubt that children across the country know or think that. Overall, it's a minor complaint in an otherwise enjoyable book!
Elijah Goes to Philadelphia follows Elijah and his dad during their trip to Philadelphia. Elijah is hesitant at first, but he then learns about the history of the city and visits various locations with his dad and guide Vinnie. Elijah then sees how cool the city can be. The book ends with points of interest and landmarks and a basic map, which is a nice touch. Elijah Goes to Philadelphia is a fun book to learn about the city.
Elijah’s going to Philadelphia, but not willingly. Nevertheless, Elijah’s dad drags him to the City of Brotherly Love, the pair manage to go back in time and see historical events in real time, thanks to their guide Vinnie. Not a picture book, but still a charming quick read for kids who love history.
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and Buckeye Muscle Media in exchange for an honest review.
This is a very cute book highlighting major Philadelphia attractions and historical sites of note. It lacks additional context around where Elijah is from or why he’s visiting Philadelphia - but the target audience age is as low as pre-K so that’s understandable!
I see this as a good precursor or accompaniment to a class field trip or a scavenger hunt around the city. Additionally, educators could break the book into its sights and expand on the individual visits as topics.
I really enjoyed reading this book,
It is a great mix of history and overcoming your fear of the un known.
It will be great for a younger audience.
Thank you for the chance to read this
I enjoyed this book so much! I honestly love the concept of children having a dream, and when they wake up, something tells them it might not be just a dream!
This book was so much fun and honestly a very good way to discover and learn some facts about Philadelphia in a fun new way. It's great for children to get to know more about history in an enjoyable manner!
I loved the illustrations, but I wished we could see them getting into a time machine or something when they travel. It would be so much fun!
