Thank you to Bryce Gibby and NetGallery for offering me this audiobook.
The Princess of Selgovae and the High King is a suspenseful adventure story with elements of magic and romance. The cover art of this book is extremely eye-catching and will definitely give curious readers an early incentive to learn more about this book.
The story is set against the backdrop of ancient Britain. It's very clear from the story that Gibby did a substantial amount of research on early British history and Arthurian mythology in advance of writing this novel, as the story is abundant in his discoveries. There are also several religious and biblical references in the story, and this book could easily be sub-classified as Christian fantasy.
It should also be noted that there is a lot of lofty and archaic dialogue in the story, all of which is perfectly reflective of ancient Britain. For those readers or listeners who aren't used to reading such prose, it's recommended that you take your time to fully appreciate all that's written here.
Although not at all obvious in the early part of the story, this book is a retelling of King Arthur and will likely be enjoyed by readers who enjoy fantasy and historical fiction. Once you recognize this, the characters will likely become more familiar, and you may appreciate the story in an entirely different way.
This is the first book in a series of seven books, so there's definitely enormous potential for character development, world-building, and high adventure in the remaining books. This book is also much shorter than comparable epic fantasy adventure novels, making it a great option for those wanting to try a new series!
I did not love this book. It was slow, it meandered, and it is part of a series. The writing is a bit archaic and the narration doesn't help. Sorry!
Thanks Netgalley and publisher for the free e-arc.
Thank you for the opportunity to listen to this well written book. I enjoyed the rich world the author created. I’m sorry, but I didn’t love the narration.
I have to be honest I found this book hard to get through. I couldn’t get into the story and found I couldn’t even picture the story as it was described.
I got a free audio copy of this book. This is my honesty review.
I really enjoyed this book, knights, kings, and princesses what is not to love, I did not want to stop listening. The narration was very good. I plan on listening to it again. I cannot wait to listen/read the other books in the series. I highly recommend this book. This is a new author to me, and I look forward to more of his books.
The Princess of Selgovae and The High King by Bryce Gibby
The Princess of Selgovae and The High King is a fantasy fiction with a retelling of King Author. This book is an interesting retelling of King Author. Like other tales, this story is loaded with mystical tales and magical elements, making anything possible in such a world. The book is loaded with myths and tales, showing the author Bryce Gibby must have researched prior to writing this book.
While the characters had a lot of development, it was hard to follow them all in the beginning. At times the book drug a bit, especially with the length of the chapters. It made it hard to find a stopping point. The story was able to incorporate a lot of different storylines and elements, maintaining your interest.
The story was a wonderful trip into a fantasyland of myth and magic, pulling you in and holding on until the end.
I listened to the audiobook. The narrator used different voices to distinguish the different characters. While I enjoyed him, the story was often still hard to follow with an audiobook. It may be because the chapters were about an hour each.
This was nicely written and narrated, but I wanted a little more action and intrigue and romance from the story.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
Writing was a bit slow for my liking. But it did have that timeless classic feel you’d expect from an Arthurian legend.
I enjoyed the characters the most. And the narrator for the book very well!
This book was packed with so much information that you walk away feeling a little like you are walking away from an all-you-can-eat restaurant....full, satisfied, but also a little achy and dazed. The story itself was good and I thought the narrator did well with it, although it could be a little tricky to understand words at times. That's to be expected with accents, though. The character development was solid. I've tried to put a precise pinpoint on how to describe this audiobook and I am realizing that, although not a perfect fit, the best I can come up with is that it felt a big like reading a historical book of facts. While the intrigue and battles and betrayal are all there, I felt like that got overshadowed by the details that at times became tedious. For me, the book was ok, but not a perfect fit for my reading style.
Fun engaging story! I liked how there were faith elements but it felt just a little forced. I think it’s a great fun adventure read and could definitely entertain many groups of people. If you love a good King Arthur story you will have fun with this read.
The Princess of Selgovae and the High King was unfortunately a book I did not finish. I found the book to have too many characters to the point it was confusing. Also a lot of subplots as well as backstory made the plot less interesting. There was also gore. For these reasons I chose not to continue. If these points were not bothersome to readers I think they would enjoy it as it had potential at the point I stopped reading. I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley in trade for my honest opinion. My thoughts are my own.
A fantasy of epic proportions about a princess with a secret and the people after her to find it. It was a good idea. A lot of fun. But it wasn’t really my style. Thanks for the opportunity to listen tho!
