I enjoy the show Ted Lasso and was looking forward to reading this book about the show. The book tells how the show started as a commercial campaign and evolved into the series that ran for three seasons. There are interviews with the cast and crew talking about their time on the show and about their time working with their fellow castmates. The first season was filmed before the pandemic, so part of the book talks about the difficulties of filming the second season and all the restrictions that were in place during that time. The book highlights certain episodes from each season and little tidbits about filming those episodes. It was fun to see what the cast had to say about filming this show and how they felt about their characters.
Overall, this was a fun read that any Ted Lasso fan might enjoy.
throughout this book, Jeremy Egner assumes that you have seen Ted Lasso. Which, to be clear, I think is a very logical assumption to make about the readers.
I had not seen Ted Lasso prior to starting this book.
Still, I have so many friends who adore it and I know enough about its popularity and basic lore that I was intrigued. I wouldn't necessarily say that this is a book ~everyone~ should read—I do think it will primarily appeal to fans of the series. But it also speaks to Jeremy Egner's skill as a storyteller that I enjoyed this so much without having seen the show (to the point that I started watching the show concurrently with my read).
This is just a really fun look into not only the plot of the show, but the process of ideation and creating a phenomenon like this. It also goes without saying that, since Ted Lasso is such a positive show, this book is a pretty peppy read as well. Jeremy Egner is far enough removed from the subject, though, that he does offer some critical takes where necessary.
There were just a ton of fun insights into the show that I loved being able to look out for while watching. (Of course, having not been a fan before, I haven't consumed much interview/podcast content surrounding the series, so I guess I couldn't confidently say that this is all new information).
If you read this without watching Ted Lasso (which again, I don't fully know why you would do that, but also I did that), there will be spoilers. Which like... again, not the fault of a book that assumes you're probably on your fifth rewatch if you're willing to read a 350 page book about the series lol
I love Ted Lasso. (The character and the show.) Believe by Jeremy Egner is exactly the kind of book I want for anything I'm a fan of, honestly. Give me all the oral histories of all the things.
It's delightful how this show was made with so much love and everybody involved truly, well, believed in what they were creating. Readers can hear directly from pretty much every actor big and small, as well as many members of the production crew. The entire show's existence for only a short time has more than made its mark on our society and pop culture as a whole. That's an impressive feat.
I was hoping for more book-exclusive interviews. It seemed like a good deal of material was previously published. I also didn't need a rehash of the real-life relationship drama that I will not recount here. Felt like it wasn't included with a purpose. other than to draw unnecessary conclusions about someone's personal life.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley!
thank you NetGalley for a copy of "Believe" by Jeremy Egner. Believe is a fun, enjoyable book for fans of the tv show."Ted Lasso" it is filled with interviews from the actors. the author writes about the making of Ted Lasso from launching the idea of the show. the filming of the show in England, interviews. the book writes of each episode. the success of Ted Lasso. Filming the second season during the intense part of the Covid. the extra shows Ted Lasso fiilmed, like the Christmas show and "Beard". this is a good book to read for fans of Ted Lasso. I read the book because i enjoyed this well made tv show about a man who was hired to coach a soccer team {or football as it is known in England} A nice guy who earned the respect of this "ragtag" team. I was glad to get the chance to read this fact filled book.
**Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this title in exchange for a fair and honest review**
Like so many others, I loved Ted Lasso and found it an uplifting watch. When this book was suggested to me, I quickly requested it. I love 'behind-the-scenes' info about TV programmes and films.
This was a far weightier read than I was anticipating. Each episode had its own chapter and there were various quotes from cast and crew along with information about location, special effects, etc. It was extraordinarily well-researched and clearly a passion project for the author.
I think it would work better to read each chapter as you watch each episode. Trying to read the whole thing in one go (a while after finishing the programme) didn't work very well for me. Lesson learned.
If you love Ted Lasso and fancy a re-watch, this would be an excellent companion guide.
this is definitely a must-read and going to be a bookshelf staple for ted lasso fans when it comes out! the interviews and scene paraphrases are blended almost seamlessly, and episode recaps feel more fun than just a “what went well and what didn’t”. fun facts that i wasn’t aware of before are sprinkled in throughout, and the only reason i marked it down from five stars is that we get everyone’s perspective— other than the fans. i think that would’ve been a really interesting addition to the narrative.
but i loved what was here. i really did.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for gifting me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
MY HEART. To be honest I’m still not fully recovered from this show ending to begin with, so this was like an additional shot of adrenaline to fill that hole in my heart that Ted and company left behind. Egner seamlessly weaves this book together, giving you all the warm and fuzzies we used to get from Apple TV+ every Wednesday when a new episode dropped. I think this book impressively communicates the importance of selecting the right cast to tell the story exactly as it was meant to be told, and we all reaped the benefits as fans. This is a must for any Ted Lasso fan, and I’ll definitely be picking up a copy for my shelves.
As a massive Ted Ladso fan this was such a fun return to Richmond. Full of great tidbits and thoughtful ruminations on the meaning behind some of the series best moments, it’s a book any Lasso fan won’t want to miss
Believe by Jeremy Egner is an absolute must-read for any self-respecting "Ted Lasso" fan. It's a heart-warming, funny, insightful look into a television series that managed to make a difference. Egner writes as a reporter but shares his admiration for the show, its creators, actors, and all those involved in it in a delightful way. Along the way, there are looks into what drove the creators and what made the premise work. It's a fun read for even the least ardent fan. So, as you read this, "Be curious, and not judgmental." Thanks to #NetGalley and #Dutton for the opportunity to preview this book. #Believe
