This recipe book is for young chefs. I think it met it's objective and will be a great first dessert cookbook for kids interested in the kitchen or just interested in treats. Don't all kids like to eat the food they just made?

The book starts out by introducing the concept of using the right tools for the job. The difference between a liquid measure and a dry measuring cup? Honestly, my mother didn't know, so it's a great starting point. Also pictures of how to properly use those tools.

There are two main chapters - cupcakes and cakes. There's a recipe for a 3 ingredient cupcake and 4 ingredients for the creamy frosting, with photographs for every step. Some recipes involve using the stove so adult supervision may need to be provided, depending on the age of the chef. The recipe for carrot cake uses a grater and funnel cake uses hot oil for frying. But most of the recipes are pretty easy with a very attractive (and impressive) cupcake or cake.

I love that this cookbook encourages young bakers to try ambitious baking projects beyond a simple vanilla or chocolate. I also love the step-by-step directions with pictures. Even as an adult I often try a new recipe with no idea if the batter looks right or if I'm doing everything correctly. Having the pictures as a reference should be really helpful to young bakers and makes this a great book even for brand new bakers. The only part I was a huge fan of was that these cupcakes are basically half frosting and I'm more of a minimalist when it comes to frosting - my fear with the actual cupcake part is that it will rely to heavily on the frosting for good flavor.
