Synopsis:
A Celebration of Fascinating Facts and Amazing Real-Life Stories for Dog Lovers
My thoughts:
🤔 I love this book! So many neat facts about dogs!
🤔 There’s lots of text on each page complete with full-color illustrations on every single page. I think the illustrations complement the text very nicely. Due to the amount and complexity of the text, this is definitely a pick for older young readers.
🤔 I appreciated the glossary and index of dog breeds in the back of the book.
🤔 Readers will walk away from this book with a much better understanding of our truest friends. ❤️🐶

As is the norm for largely picture books, I flipped through this initially just to get a feel of it from the illustrations. They were delightful, humorous even. I particularly liked one of the ones used on an early title page (not the cover) that shows a massive dog stretched out across more than 2/3 of a couch with its human looking small on the other end. That one is explained in the narrative, btw, which notes that the dog and its siblings went through, uh, several couches. Another that popped up not long after that shows three dogs in a row that seem to be, uh, using their noses. Dog owners will get my drift. In other words, though, these illustrations set the mood for the book which is largely upbeat and jam packed with snippets about this or that dog and their history and characteristics.
While I was expecting more of a story mode than is here, the juxtaposition of illustrations and info works well. It's concise and keeps your eyes moving across the page. While much of the info is factual, ie the origins of dogs and how they evolved over time giving the reader a look at how long dogs have been a part of not just we humans' lives but the earth. It notes that while the first "modern" dog appeared some 40,000 years ago, the canine family tree goes back much, much further. Did you know there's an Egyptian tomb painting that shows a man walking his dog? I need to remind my Daisy of that regal bit of info when we go out again tomorrow. Collars have been found with names like Brave One and North Wind, too, so they were definitely individuals to the humans involved.
In any case, I won't try to detail the narrative. It's someone at one time succinct and right-to-the-point while also managing to cover a wide variety of dog related topics, from their amazing noses to body language (and how they seem to read ours, too). As an Alaskan who has not only ridden behind a team of sled dogs but once owned a retired racing sled dog, I was glad to see these northern bred dogs get a nod in the book, I will note, however. And, oh, a teaser....check out the section on what seems to have been the legendary King Arthur's legendary dog, Cavall. Readers will enjoy the book, I believe, and appreciate the glossary and index of breeds mentioned at the end. Thanks #NetGalley and #NosyCrowInc for allowing me a sneak peek at this quite comprehensive book. Having my own furry friend beside me as I read made it even more special.
What an awesome children’s book! The illustrations in this book are really fun both in style and in colors and the written information is great too. There is such a good variety of topics in there. I know a lot about dogs but even I learned a bunch of new things here! From dogs in science to the jobs they do to their feelings, intelligence, heroism, and so much more! This is a great edition to any child’s library!
My son and I loved this book. It's packed full of information on dogs and the illustrations are lovely.
A look into facts and interesting information about dogs! This goes through history, modern jobs, breeds, facts, and more! It also has really cute illustrations. I loved this so much, and I learned a lot I didn't know about dogs even though I'm an adult. I'd definitely recommend this for dog lovers, young or old!
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Definitely a dense and comprehensive data dump all about dogs. This would be a very difficult read for kids younger than maybe 6th grade and may be too daunting for them. This book could possibly be somewhat entertaining for young non-readers just with the drawings of the dogs. However, I would hit this in middle school grades for sure. Would be a great source for school reports. The pictures were absolutely adorable. The history part got a bit long and even adults can't quite grasp the centuries and thousands of years ago concepts of dog origination. The dogs in the art section was very interesting and I even learned stuff as an adult. The quick little stories about helper and rescue dogs was great. I think the author represented and talked about so many countries, making it a diverse dive into dogs from around the whole world. Definitely a fitting title for the book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love the cover of this book. This book is full of fun and interesting dog facts and stories. The illustrations are very cute. This book will not only definitely appeal to kids who love dogs but also adults who love dogs.
A great addition to any pet-lover (or pet-lover to be) library collection. This book would be appreciated by many children. The accessible illustrations coupled with the massive topics this book covers is something I’m shocked hasn’t already been published!?
This is a great tool for the classroom - many topics we study, especially in social studies would be made more approachable for children if we could share how dogs played a role. I use this tactic when teaching about Canada’s role in war and how service animals made a big impact.
This is a title I will be adding to our school library.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. I loved this book all about dogs for kids. It is well-written and chock full of facts that even I found interesting as an adult. I think kids will flock to this book and love it to pieces.

4 Stars
When I requested this book, I wasn't expecting a dog encyclopedia, I thought it would be more of a simple picture book with some cool dog facts. Which- it is. It is jammed packed full of facts about dogs, and beautiful illustrations. If you are a dog lover, you will absolutely love this book. It would be a great book for the classroom or for children. It did get a little too "Sciency" at times and I wasn't a huge fan of that. But this book is thick and literally includes anything you would want to know about the nature of dogs. their history and origins.
Such a good book!! It is written so well and the illustrations are absolutely adorable!! If you love dogs this is the perfect book for you!
The perfect book for dog lovers, this was so much fun!!
The illustrations were lovely, so colorful. I think everyone can enjoy this book, no matter the age. There were so many interesting facts and stories, even I was learning new things. There's something for everyone in this book!
A fun, jam-packed book for anyone a little obsessed with dogs. There are beautiful illustrations to accompany facts about dog history, famous dogs, scientific facts, behavioral facts, and different cultural relationships with dogs. Well put together, there is a perfect balance of learning and enjoyment with just enough on each page without overwhelming. There is something for everyone (and I imagine something for everyone to learn). A great book for all ages.
