The most unhinged retelling of Romeo and Juliet,
I love the attitude this whole book just radiates and it had absolutely everything I should have loved, but I just didn’t. I want to preface this with “it’s not you, it’s me” which this very may well be, I think this just wasn’t really for me.
The romance was pretty steady the whole time, I’m very glad there wasn’t any drama, miscommunication or third act break up, but I do love more to be going on. Paired with the plot and action being quite slow and spaced out it just didn’t really keep my attention. I’d have liked to have seen a lot more of their relationship growing and developing, and them fighting for each other, this felt a little flat and predictable.
A very original and unique new Romeo and Juliet, just make it lesbian and mafia? This is such a weird take but I was riveted by this idea.
‘I don’t make love, I fuck. But she makes me want to learn’ </3
The writing was a little rushed and fast paced to the extreme yet the pacing of the story was really slow, which made it a little odd to read. It was also quite choppy and not very well developed, with no real depth to the characters or especially the story.
I do love how subtly it hints at the original tale, if you look for it you can find so many hints but on the surface it’s so original.
A very modern book, they’re funny and I love their rapport and personalities in general, and Juliet’s mum is an icon and I love her.
I wish I’d loved this, and I definitely did love moments, but it wasn’t a great read for me.
I was hesitant about the story kickstarting with little background but it was a GREAT READ! The dynamic between the characters themselves as well as their familial relationships kept me invested the whole time. The ending was not as I expected but I was happy with how it turned out!
Rowan Monaghan and Jules Calloway are the daughters of rival criminal families.
(I just realized it's pretty much Romeo and Juliet. Ha.)
They're also having a affair.
But as the war between their families heats up, can they make it?
Much like Kristen Zimmer's other two books, it's a well written, entertaining read. Well plotted, good characters and story.
Rowan and Juliet have good chemistry, and feel very realistic. The sex scenes are good too, of course. I wouldn't mind another book, possibly on Elisa and her fate....
It gave mafia Romeo and Juliet but you know without them dying at the end. Super hot and steamy. Loved everything about this from the characters to the pacing.
Brava! I have enjoyed all of Kristen’s books, but this one is her best so far and definitely my favorite. The story is well written in a two person perspective that flows well and is so addictive. I didn’t want to put it down. It has the elements I enjoy; sapphic characters, a great plot, intrigue, gripping, heat and spice, family dynamics, and well developed characters. All contained in a book with a sexy cover!
Rowan and Juliet (love the play on Shakespeare here) are the daughters of two rival mob bosses in Boston.Their attraction to each other is intense and their connection must be hidden. Rowan is second in command in her father organization and he has arranged for her to marry the daughter of another crime family to join their families, but she does not love her. Juliet is home on break from college, staying with her Irish father and Italian mother. Unlike Rowan, she is not part of the inner working of her father’s organization.
As their feelings for each other grow they will be tested by the rivalry of their families. As Rowan’s father targets Jules’ family their bond becomes even stronger and they are faced with the difficult decision to stand against their fathers.
This book was a great ride that left me wanting more. Rowan and Jules were both easy to like and root for. I also liked Jules mother and their relationship dynamic. I have a feeling I will read it again and hope to listen to it in audio! I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture
What a fantastic book! It captivated me from the first page. Unquestionably essential reading! Everything a book could possibly ask for (in FF romance)—you won’t want to put it down, I promise… This book is a must-read if you are looking for FF romance, but I guarantee you will like it as it is a mafia FF romance.
First I would like to mention that I love this cover. I have a similar pair of shoes. They are my favorite ones by far and they make me feel like I am on top of the world when I wear them. But enough about me. :)
I love gangland crimes and when I saw 'mafia' I knew it would be a book for me. Romance and gangland are like water and fire you would think, but not at all. Even the toughest gangster needs someone to love.
Jules and Rowan's fathers are both crime bosses and rivals. One of them is very protective of his daughter and watches her like a hawk. She is a like a beautiful bird, but locked in a golden cage. The other father turns his daughter into a gangster too.
When the two women meet, it's the start of the end. But for whom?
This book reads like a train racing through scenes that are action packed, steamy, romantic and heart breaking.
Utterly enjoyable. 5 stars
Thank you
SPECTACULAR! I ate this up. It was everything I needed it to be and more. The chemistry the plot everything. This is one of the best arcs I have picked up and I will be reading more and secretly praying for a prequel...
