The Forever Watch is one of those odd books that could have so easily been a masterpiece but just lets it slip by. I have rarely read such an intricately dark and gritty science fiction book. Ramirez takes the reader to some grim but exciting places. He is capable of great drama and excitement but can also bore you beyond reason. Pace is a real issue here. There are flashes of excellence followed by moments of dullness. You can almost see on the pages the moments where Ramirez struggled, the language and writing becomes too floral and forced (the sex scene is a great example of this). For me the jury is still out on there, parts were spell binding and others were boring. I look forward to reading more from Ramirez as I suspect he has a book of greatness in him.

To be honest, this title just didn't engage me like I hoped it would. I couldn't connect with the main characters, and I had a hard time getting a grasp on the ship-world. I might give it a try again down the road, but maybe not.
