This was an extremely entertaining comic. It was a quick read and very enjoyable. Even for adults. I recommend.

Scoop volume 2 picks up where volume 1 left off while delivering it's own mystery. I thought the mystery was a bit weak in this one, about who murdered some guy's wife. A lot of the fantastical stuff takes a back seat and I can imagine you'd be confused when the alligator men from volume 1 show up. Still the time travel story from volume 1 is lurking in the background and looks like it will rear its head again in volume 3. I do think this is a fun series and I'm looking forward to volume 3 with that ending.

Hi Again!

The other day I was browsing Netgalley and noticed that The Scoop (a graphic novel I have already read and reviewed, you can check out that review here or on Goodreads if you are interested) now had a second volume. I was super excited and requested it right away. I had a nice time with volume one and kind of still wanted to see where things would go. A few days later, I was granted an E-ARC of the second volume (thank you so much to the publisher in exchange for my honest opinions).

SPOILERS AHEAD

Sophie is still working as an intern at the news station. Sophie’s parents definitely do not approve of her detective behaviors but they accept that she is going to do it (especially in her future line of work), that is until Sophie is approached by someone who is a supposed murderer. This supposed murderer wants Sophie to investigate and figure out who actually murdered their family. Sophie attempts to be honest with her parents but they shut this investigation down quickly, however, that does not stop Sophie from researching at her internship. Sophie definitely can not let this go and she is determined to find the actual truth behind this story.

I really enjoyed this volume. We got to see the plot develop more outside of Sophie’s mission to help her father, and we were able to find out a little more about Doc and the bunker as well. The art in this volume absolutely popped off the page and the case definitely resembled a real-life one (O.J. Simpson in real life, at least I totally think). With the way this volume ended, I am so excited to see where things go in the third volume. Let me know what graphic novels you have been reading or are interested in reading in the near future!

Goodreads Rating: 5 Stars

Excited to read Sophie's journey in Volume 2! The mystery and crime sleuthing continues. Some more subplots are introduced that are hopefully explored in Vol. 3.

"Sophie’s existence has been… not terrible lately as she splits her days between school (where Soph remains a pariah) and her internship at WMIA 7 (where way too many media tips about paranormal activity in Miami turn out to be way too true). In her spare free time, Sophie acts in Milo’s latest student film. With such a whirlwind life, it’s no surprise that everyone forgets Soph’s 15th birthday. But Soph’s parents intend to make up for this mistake by throwing her a Quinceñera. Meanwhile, a disgraced celebrity chef hears how Sophie’s been proving her father’s innocence and makes a desperate plea — he wants Sophie to help him find the “real killer” who murdered his ex-wife. With the aid of some Alligatoids and a Mangrove Man, Soph hunts through the past… while someone else hunts her in the present. This whodunit culminates with crop circles, a dance-off, a cat-and-mouse chase through the colorful, yet treacherous, streets of the Wynwood district, where Sophie finds the “real killer” — and discovers a startling new truth about herself… one which threatens to doom her once and for all."

Richard Ashley Hamilton masterfully weaves a complex and engaging narrative in "Scoop, Vol. 2," where paranormal investigations and teenage drama intersect in the vibrant city of Miami. The storyline perfectly blends mystery, humor, and heartfelt moments, making it an exhilarating read for graphic novel enthusiasts.

Sophie is a compelling protagonist whose determination to uncover the truth about her father's innocence is inspiring and relatable. Her dual life of tackling supernatural cases while navigating high school challenges adds depth to her character. The plot's progression keeps readers on their toes with unexpected twists, particularly involving peculiar characters like Alligatoids and Mangrove Man, which adds a unique flair to the mystery.

The vibrant artwork captures the essence of Miami's diverse culture and colorful neighborhoods, enhancing the storytelling experience. The chase through Wynwood's streets is particularly vivid, immersing readers in the action-packed climax.

While the fast-paced storyline is a strength, it occasionally leaves little room for character development beyond Sophie. Some supporting characters could benefit from more backstory and screen time to enrich the narrative. Despite this minor flaw, the graphic novel delivers a thrilling and emotional journey.

Overall, "Scoop, Vol. 2" is a standout graphic novel that combines an intriguing mystery with supernatural elements and teen drama, all set against the lively backdrop of Miami. It's a must-read for genre fans and leaves readers eagerly anticipating Sophie's next adventure.

"Scoop Vol.2" is an energetic and mildly frenetic second volume for this entertaining and promising series. This volume is far more focused than the last and manages to significantly clarify the ongoing story. Expect a strong Latinx protagonist, continuously developing supporting characters, a whacky but generally positive view of Miami, a bizarre tribute to Hal and Oats, Alligator people, a madder than usual scientist and a thoroughly goofy yet completely engaging plot.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, Mad Cave Studios, for providing me with an eARC in exchange for my honest feedback.

I'm upset it took me NetGalley to stumble across this gem but also glad. Even though I started with volume 2, the story is easy to pick up on, but not so much with character relationships. However, this doesn't detract from the fact that this is a really good story with amazing art. Reminds me of retro comics too. The mystery of this issue really had me surprised, especially during the reveal which I did NOT see coming. This was amazing.

Scoop follows Latina teen Sophia Cooper, who's an intern at WMIA 7. She deals with all sort of regular and supernatural shenanigans, and would do anything to get to the bottom of a mystery.

Prior to reading this, I hadn't read the first book in the series but it didn't detract from the experience. Scoop is enjoyable, engaging and a quick read. Sofie is likable enough and the world around her is so vibrant I want more of it.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 ⭐

The art style is just as stunning as the first volume. I did enjoy the plot and the mystery of this one more than the vol. 1. Also that ending has me so excited to see what happens in vol 3. It's a very quick comic to read.

Thank you Netgalley as well as the publishers for an copy in exchange for an honest review!
