This book was very predictable to me and I had a hard time wanting to keep reading it. I did finish it though and of course it ended just how I expected.

This was a really fun twist on romance, reality dating show tropes and general all around fun! I enjoyed the chase, The One, the characters and the banter.

If you are a fan of reality. tv shows, this book is definitely for you. I found this book to be fun, witty, and just the right amount of slow burn and banter between the characters. Loved it so much from the first page that I finished it in one day. Totally fun, light, beach read.❤️

Thank you to Netgalley and publisher for an arc in exchange for my honest opinion.

Publication: June 30, 2024

Rating: Not for me

I really enjoyed Freeman’s previous book “Nobody Puts Romcoms in the Corner” so when I saw this one, I figured I would request it.

Unfortunately, I really struggled to connect to the story and found the writing to have a lot of “telling” me than showing me.

I wanted to love this book so badly. I was so excited to get an ARC of it because I’m in the middle of reading another book by this author (Was it Good For You?) and loving that book. Additionally, I used to be a weekly watcher of the Bachelor, so I thought this book would be a perfect fit for me. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

I’m not really sure there’s anything specifically wrong with this book. I just didn’t feel particularly swoony over Duncan OR Ben. I didn’t find either character compelling and it made it hard for me to be interested or invested in what Molly did.

If the premise of this book appeals to you or you’ve enjoyed other books by the author, I still really recommend giving this one a shot. It just wasn’t a fit for me. I finished it, but it was a struggle for me.

Thank you next was a decent story. I liked that the author wanted to use the premise of a dating show and took inspiration from shows that a lot of people are familiar with like, love is blind, married at first sight, and love island. Because of the similarities between the book and the TV shows, the story itself kind of lacked a spark. It was almost like a retelling of a season of one of those shows. It just wasn’t as entertaining to me as a fan of those shows, she used as inspiration. The characters were OK. I didn’t really connect with anyone of them. I got pretty annoyed with Ben though through out the story. His unwillingness to actually communicate even though everyone tells him like he needs to be better, and he just didn’t really try was a little annoying. Duncan was a douche and honestly shouldn’t have gotten as much time in the story as he did. I kind of wish that Molly would’ve went in to the show as wanting revenge on Duncan for breaking up with her, however that wasn’t the case. The story really lacked drama. I feel like when the plot is centered around a reality show it needs drama that all really good reality shows have. The only drama that this really had was learning about Ben’s hesitation with marriage and him just really not being as open, communicating his feelings to Molly to secure her in their relationship outside of that there’s no drama at all. Unfortunately the story just came off a little bland, but had potential to be a really really good story. If some things were just better ask executed.

I really liked the concept of dating in a reality dating show and having the twist of there being your ex in there, who you coincidentally get paired with as your supposed ‘perfect match’. However, I was not a fan of there being two of her exes and it making a love triangle that went on for sooooo long. I knew from the description this was the case going in, but even after the progress Molly and Ben had made to move on from things and admit they were both IN LOVE, she was still somehow thinking of choosing Duncan. And as a character I despised Duncan, which is hopefully the intended outcome of how he was written, but my god every time he was even mentioned after half way through I wanted to put the book down. It always came back to him, even when it shouldn’t have.

Because of how her thoughts kept being thrown back to Duncan it felt so repetitive, and the disagreements Molly and Ben became so irritating. Ben says something that Molly doesn’t agree with so Molly brings up how he left her, AGAIN. Molly says something and Ben says the wrong thing or gets stuck in his head and all he does is sigh, AGAIN. That’s a bit how it felt.

I understand Ben’s character is based on him not being able to communicate but there really was so much more I would have liked in their development. I don’t think it helped that it’s in third person either though, as you couldn’t really feel as connected to them and what they were really feeling.
I would’ve liked to be privy to more of their small moments here and there from their own first person perspectives. Especially as it’s a second chance romance, I would’ve LOVED to see some throwback moments to when they were together before, it was talked about briefly but a timeline throwback will also build that relationship further with the reader, in my opinion.

However, all this aside, it did make for a quick, easy, light romance. And I gave it two stars because I enjoyed the increased tension between Molly and Ben and think they were a super cute pairing, who just needed to figure shit out. And they got there in the end.

I will admit that I am not a fan of the dating shows depicted in this book but I still went into this with an open mind as I enjoyed Freeman's other book, The Beach Reads Book Club.

Overall, I found this an easy read but I didn't feel very invested. The 3rd party narration felt off to me and the flow and rhythm of the writing felt forced at certain points - it might have been better to have a 1st person narrative and alternate between the two main characters.

I didn't really connect with the characters to be honest and just felt like I didn't get to a stage where I was very invested in them or the story.

It's very predictable, which is fine, usually you pick up this kind of book because you're looking for something that's light, easy and predictable.

I think this book definitely has a spot on the summer reading list, especially for those who like dating shows like Love Island etc. It's worth a read if you're looking for something light and easy.

Thank you to netgalley, the author and the publisher for the advance copy to read.

The blurb for this sounded right up my street. Unfortunately, it felt very repetitive in places and I found myself losing interest.

Thank you, Next tried to do too many things at once and ultimately dropped the ball. I went into this expecting something in the vein of The Ultimatum, and I could for sure see which reality TV and cultural moments inspired this book, but they just…were boring on page. For a book of this length, it took way too long to get started, and way too long to get to the ending. The dialogue and interactions were extremely repetitive, the characters insufferable and flat, and I did not, for a second, buy chemistry among any of the characters.

However, I really loved the concept and still think, with some more tweaking and editing this could be a fun and captivating read. As it stands, I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped, and this missed the mark.

Thank you to HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, and NetGalley for providing an ARC!

This was a quick fun read.

Guy breaks up with girl to go on dating show?

Girl goes on dating show? (Personally, if that’s why he broke up with you, he doesn’t deserve you 💁🏻‍♀️👑)

Yes please! Who doesn’t love a good reality dating show?

Her FIRST love also is on the dating show????

DRAMA!

And I’m here for it.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for a chance to read and review.

The premise of this book (yes I do religiously watch every new season of Love is Blind and The Ultimatum) - alongside the cute cover!! - had me in a chokehold so I was super excited to receive an ARC but unfortunately the execution didn’t live up to my hopes and I got very little enjoyment from the story. A very bland take on the dating shows it’s inspired by, the narration is all over the place (it’s third-person but also their thoughts read as if they’re coming from the characters??), So Much Repetition to the point I was putting my Kindle down because I couldn’t read the same argument a g a i n, cringey-dialogue, worse spice inserts, and by a certain point I realised I didn’t really care what the outcome would be. Even the villain wasn’t interesting and I can’t understand his motives. A bummer because I was hoping for a fun summery read but it was just. fine.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy in exchange for my honest review.

1 star.

I wanted to like this book so bad, but it felt impossible to enjoy. The main couple had no chemistry and I definitely wasn’t rooting for the relationship. There was too much miscommunication in this book, and the dialogue felt super unrealistic sometimes. There was a lot of telling but not a lot of showing, and sometimes I wanted to punch Molly for being so stupid.

Being rejected feels so familiar to me and seeing a FMC experiencing something that I did? I was hooked from the start. The portrayal of blooming relationship was extremely well-done and I think this book is cute in its roots, adorable and brave in its stem and steamy in its blooms.

I absolutely loved the reality show aspect, THE ONE felt like watching the Bachelor or Love Island and I binged the entire book! A perfect summer read!

Thank you so much One More Chapter for the e-galley, Netgalley and the author too!

Second chance
Dual pov
Third person

This is a romance about a show called “The One” which is a love island type reality show. Molly and Ben are contestants on it, and they’ve previously dated in the past.

I did enjoy this but felt it dragged a little in the middle. It lacked substance, the side characters were very one dimensional and Duncan was an ick!!! I wish we could have seen more depth to those characters.

I really liked Ben, I’d love another book with Ben’s character more fleshed out as I feel he was very interesting, but again lacked the depth I wanted.

Overall it was a fun and fast paced summer read. Nothing special but I still would recommend it especially if you like love island.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc.

When Mollys boyfriend Duncan tells her he is splitting up with her to go on a reality dating show to increase his profile as a Personal Trainer Molly decides the best way to ensure they can be together is to go on the show. What Milly didn’t realise however is that the man who she fell in love with before meeting Duncan is also on the show and the algorhtym used has paired them up. Molly can’t believe it when she sees Ben and all the hurt and rejection come flooding back.
This was a wonderful romcom and really felt I got to know the characters and what makes them the way they are. Kathryn has a way of building the tension so you can feel the electricity between the characters and the additional spicy content wasn’t there for the sake of it, it was integral to the story and the chemistry between the characters was electric..
I always enjoy Kathryn’s books and this is no exception.
Thank you to Netgalley and HarperCollins for an advance copy of this book, my opinions however are all my own.

This was a fun romance read. The premise was entertaining and there was lots of drama between Molly, Duncan, and Ben. I really enjoyed the ending and I felt like Molly ended up with the right man.
