Thank you to Blackstone Publishing for an early audiobook of Shark Night!
The audio production SLAYS, definitely recommend reading this one on audio for a good time.
Shark Night goes off the rails; so much so, it makes this book feel a bit messy. However, everything does tie together, making it all a lot more cohesive. & I think children would absolutely love the adventure they go on. I have /some/ questions based on the plot & characters (like, what kind of mother?!), but that’s just the adult in me. In the end, this is a silly adventure written by R.L. Stine and that’s that on that.
I really enjoy this children's book, engaging and even scary in some parts. I recommend moms to be a bit cautious but it was a great story over all. I listened to the audio version and I like the suspense the narrator gave, I think it got me more sucked into the story more. Defiantly a read for the whole family to enjoy, maybe in the car on the way to the beach!
ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.
The narrator was a perfect fit for this story! He’s engaging and easy to listen to, especially for younger readers. I was so excited to get an early listen for an RL Stine book and it brought me right back to childhood. The twists were plentiful and even as an adult I found myself trying to solve the mystery! If you have a younger reader or still love Stine’s work like myself, I’d definitely recommend reading this book!

Shark Night is a fast, fun and engaging scary story for kids, by legendary children's author, R.L. Stine.
I listened to this audiobook, fabulously narrated by Ramon de Ocampo, and highly recommend that as a format. Told via 1st-person POV, de Ocampo truly brought MC, Liam, to life. It really felt like you were listening to Liam tell his story.
Liam's Mom is a Documentary Filmmaker who specializes in Nature Docs. Her latest assignment involves making a film for the Danger Channel for Shark Week. She comes up with a great idea to submerge a diver into a tank, along with a big shark, to see what happens. I mean, what could go wrong?
After the original diver is injured, Liam is forced to fill in, because Stine's parental characters always make the worst decisions ever. We all know this. On the day of filming, everything possible goes wrong and Liam founds himself swept out to sea, forced to fight for his life. Will he be able to figure out a way out of this?
This was a lot of fun. It gets wild. I was completely entertained. I laughed out loud, cringed, yelled at some of the characters and couldn't believe how quickly it read. This does feature a classic Stine ending, and another frequent feature of Stine books, a bratty younger sibling. While, personally, I wish that the ending could have gone in a different direction, I still do appreciate the story as a whole. It works. Kids will love this.
Thank you so much to the publisher, Blackstone Publishing, for providing me with a copy of the audiobook. I love to keep up with Stine's latest releases and this one delivered!
I was a huge RL STINE fan when I was growing up and read all of his books I could get my hands on, particularly Fear Street. So I was thrilled to see he was releasing a new children's book, Shark Night.
I really enjoyed the first half of the story but thought that the second half got a little silly, far-fetched and predictable, but I think kids would absolutely love it. I adored the main characters, Liam, an anxious 12 year old boy helping his mom film a documentary for Shark Week for the Danger Channel, and his younger sister, Rosa, who was funny and pushed Liam’s buttons every chance she got. As a teacher, I can see my students loving this book. Overall, it was a fun read. It is fast paced and full of action, adventures, suspense, cliffhangers, sibling rivalry, ocean life and a couple of crazy pirates.
We've always been told to 'never judge a book by its cover' but can we take a minute to recognize how amazing this cover is? Isn’t cartoon Liam adorable? And the reflection of the shark in his goggles makes it even more interesting. It definitely made me even more excited to read this book.
The book is tagged as horror but I would say it was more suspenseful than scary.
Ramon de Ocampo did an amazing job narrating the audiobook. His tone and energy were spot on, and he gave each of the characters their own voice bringing the story to life.
Thank you @NetGalley, @blackstonepublishing, and @rl_stine1 for granting me early access to Shark Night in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars.
Liam was helping his mom film a documentary for the Danger Channel. Alone in a giant water tank, he was holding a camera while a twenty-foot-long hammerhead shark was being lowered in… Then he realised something wasn’t right - they sent down the WRONG shark!
What a fun story! When I saw this was a book from R.L. Stine, I knew I had to jump onto it. Written in the signature style of Stine where the chapters were short and ended with cliffhangers, this was exactly what I had expected.
Never mind that most of the events that happened didn’t make any logical sense, because this was fast-paced, full of adrenaline rush, and perfect for middle grade readers wanting to see action and jump scares!
The audiobook was performed really well. I loved the narration and the sound effects.
R. L. Stine did it again! Fantastic story and fantastic writing as always! Even though I'm a college student R. L. Stine always sucks me into his books just as he did when I was a child, and he's still able to make my stomach churn in anticipation of what will happen next, especially with those pesky little cliffhangers he's famous for. 10/1o
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this one! The audio by Ramón de Ocampo was pretty solid!
The premise for this is that Liam’s mother is a screenwriter for tv. Her big idea gets picked up for the latest Shark Night on the Danger Channel and her big promise is that Liam will NOT have to be the kid inside the tank. Naturally, we know that’s not going to be true.
As usual, this has all the silliness, the cliffhanger endings, and all the possible scares it could…just like the Goosebumps books. I’m just always curious as to why these separate releases aren’t just GB. He has a very signature style anyway. I wonder if it’s a Stine or a publisher thing.
This was enjoyable and silly and quick, exactly what I’d want and expect from a Stine read. The only snag for me was the fact that it’s literally called Shark Night (both the book and the channel’s special) and yet the shark has the most limited page time? Especially when other ‘things’ have more.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC audiobook of Shark Night by R.L. Stine.
I read book by R.L. Stine in the good old days. It was fun to revisit the author and to have my kids listen to the book. The narrator did a great job at all of the different voices. We had a great time listening to the adventure.
It is not a spooky book, just a little heart pounding shark terror. We laughed, enjoyed the thrill of the shark swim and went on a great adventure. We got so mad at Liam's sister. she volunteers him for everything. She is so mean.
Thanks for the enjoyable ride!
This book was an absolute ride! From the beginning we are thrown into a crazy shark tale, am injured actor, and a child going into a shark tank with the wrong shark. A hungry shark. And every moment that unfolds after the giant tank encases our young MC is one terrifying mishap after another. I don’t know how many times I thought the MC was a goner. This was an absolutely enjoyable read. Will definitely reread a time or five.
I recently listened to an ALC of RL Stine’s new book, Shark Night, and I gave it 4 🌟🌟🌟🌟! While this isn’t my favorite Stine book, it was a fun, quick read, perfect for summer time. We follow Liam and his sister, Rosa, throughout this journey. (don’t want to spoil anything!) Liam’s mom is a filmmaker trying to make a show that focuses on sharks and uses children instead of adults as the main characters. After events go wrong, Liam becomes the child who will be in the show, and that’s where the adventure begins! 🦈🌊
This book publishes July 2, 2024!
Thank you, @netgalley and Blackstone Publishing, for providing this ALC in exchange for an honest review! 🎧📖
I grew up reading RL Stine’s thrillers and so it felt special to pass this author on to my daughter.
We were lucky enough to request the audiobook and scheduled it for a road trip.
My daughter loved it. She finished it in one go, as she couldn’t tear herself away from it. She found it really informative and learnt a thing or two about the different kinds of sharks. As a parent, I love it when my kids learn through being entertained. As you’d expect from this author, there is plenty of action and thrills to keep your attention. She loved the characters, especially the annoying little sister as I think she could relate! She enjoyed the narration but felt a better job could be done to voice the girls in the book. She loved the turn of events towards the book and though she was satisfied by the ending, she said she would love to read a sequel.
She would recommend this book to daredevils, shark enthusiasts and readers who enjoy fast paced, eventful plots.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a chance to review an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is giving OG Goosebumps! I had so much fun reading Shark Night even though it’s completely ridiculous and a little predictable. I was having memories of reading one of my favs, Horrorland.
Liam’s mom has an idea for a new show that will be aired on The Danger Channel during their equivalent of Shark Week — a child is going to swim in a tank with a shark. The actor/athlete who was assigned to the job gets injured the morning of the shoot so Liam is forced to take his place. Everything instantly goes wrong. Instead of an old hammerhead with no teeth, they released a bull shark into the tank! And then it gets worse from there.
Shark Night is going to be so much fun for young readers and us older people who grew up on this stuff.
Also, the narrator was great. It isn’t always easy to voice a story from the perspective of preteen boy.
I really enjoyed this story! Listening to this book gave me a true nostalgic experience since I grew up reading books by R L Stine. I truly believe that this audio will be greatly enjoyed by readers/listeners of all ages. It is entertaining while also being modern.
Heart-pounding, fear-inducing, R.L. Stine.
I grew up reading the Goosebumps books and was surprised to learn how popular those remain to this day. In fact, my students are reading the original copies from the 90s, hopefully I can update them at some point.
I was excited to get the opportunity to listen to a new R.L. Stine. I also like how this is scary but does not rely on the supernatural. Some of my students want scary but do not read anything about the supernatural, so this will be a fantastic recommendation for them.
Liam is a well-explored main character and the sibling dynamic will also be very relatable.
I am excited to add this to my library.
Thank you to Blackstone Publishing- Audiobooks and Net Galley for the eARC! All opinions are my own and only influenced by my knowledge of what my elementary students like.
3.5 stars
I feel like this one was missing a little something. It wasn't as horror-y and the plot felt a little all over the place.
Carlo is thrown into a shark tank after the person who was supposed to do it for his mom's show on the Danger Channel (lol) breaks his ankle. But they send the wrong shark (bull shark instead of hammerhead) and the tank breaks and Carlo somehow ends up in the middle of the ocean with no one in sight. He makes his way to an island where he discovers his sister who saw the tank break and followed him. There is a weird resort on the island that they make their way to to try to contact their mom.
I think it's because the "monster" in this book was a shark instead of a gremlin or talking ventriloquist dummy that made this book a little off for me for an RL Stine book. I like the fantasy horror aspect of his usual books.
While the plot felt kind of all over the place, there was a reason for it we find out at the end. It was kind of amusing and did tie things together that may have been confusing.
The audiobook narrator was fun. Whenever Carlo got scared he did a really good job of depicting that and made those parts really pop.
A fun, quick read if you are a big RL Stine or shark fan!
Thanks to the publisher, Blackstone Publishing, and NetGalley for the ARC audiobook copy of this book for review.
I thought this was a fun, engaging, and thrilling adventure ride for middle grades. There is plenty of thrilling and terror-filled moments in the book, and I think the fear of the kids is palpable throughout. It was very twisty and turny, with lots of interesting and scary things happen with sharks, snakes, and sea monsters, as well as adults who are out to get the kids. The brother and sister team is cute. The action scenes are well-written and I think are clear enough to keep a young reader's attention. I think older elementary/middle school aged kids will enjoy this one if they enjoy other RL Stine books. I thought the narrator of the audiobook was good and engaging. It felt more at a normal speed at 1.25, but I can see why an audiobook for kids would be a tad slower.
A few things I would note about the story:
The ending was... weird. As an adult, I'm thinking this lady should have her kids removed from her care because she clearly doesn't care about traumatizing them to push her own career forward. How, as a mother, would you be able to tell your kids you don't know who they are?! Even if it is a prank and for views, I still couldn't imagine a real mother putting her children through that. And even worse, having the little sister being in on the joke that terrified her brother feels mean.
Is this story more of a meta tale about parents who put their kids on TV, Youtube, or social media for everyone to see (throwing them to the sharks)? I thought so, but there's not really resolution to this idea if it is there. If it is, I don't think kids of that age are going to fully grasp that sort of analysis in this way. And the mom doesn't learn anything about how she treats her kids. She's happy about it, and feels no guilt for putting her kids, alone and scared, on TV. So if the author was attempting to say something about society, I would say it generally fell flat. Maybe I'm reading too much into a children's book, but I like to think that even kids can grasp those sorts of theoretical concepts when they're explained well.
Review will be posted to Goodreads, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble upon release date. Thanks again!
It's a classic R.L. Stine! It's fun, thrilling with just a little bit of silliness. Really great middle grade for those who want a fun shark story with some bonus thrills. Quick and easy to read, you can't help but to love Stine's books!
The narrator was great. There was a lot of energy in the performance which made it really fun to listen to.
Thank you so much Netgalley and the publishers for a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review!
Keeping in mind that this was a children's book, I really enjoyed it. It mostly brought me back to the time period of my life when I inhaled every Goosebumps book in existence.
I thought the narrator did a great job and the overall production kept me engaged.
On its face, what happens to our main character is scary from a child's perspective, but it actually goes deeper than that. The underlying theme of trust and mistrust in our parents was what kind of shook me. I think that this may go over the heads of the age range the book is intended for.
Overall, it was nostalgic for me and I enjoyed listening to it.
I enjoyed reading this middle school book to get idea what my students might be reading. R.L. Stein continues to provide an action packed silly adventure but the overall storyline is jammed packed with just too much. I really liked the characters being siblings and the banter back and forth was relatable and fun. The narrator did a great job keeping engaged. 3-5 graders will find this a fun read any older I think will find it silly. Thanks NetGalley for this arc of this audiobook.
