It's a wonderful collection of desires. I loved all of Gillian's essays before each section. It showed how close this collection was to her. Just beautiful.
It was really good! I tried to sit down and read it all at once and quickly realized a lot of them blended together, so I learned to read it in small chunks. This book is definitely a - read it throughout the month and take your time - book. Recommend it!
A spicy and interesting read. I really looked forward to receiving this eARC and was not disappointed.
A wonderful exploration of women's fantasies. It's wonderful to see so many women open up and verbalize the world in their mind. It's unfortunate, that we are at the age we are in, and women's pleasure is still so cloaked in shame and avoidance.
Want was a great and SPICY collection. I liked the anonymous nature of the stories and they were varied enough to keep me interested.
This is a fascinating collection of stories about women’s fantasies and desires. More and more romance books with various levels of spice and themes have become mainstream, and I think it’s important that women not feel shame in their sexual desires and interests. This collection of stories shows that you are not alone in your thoughts, and it’s normal to feel those desires.
I went into this book not really knowing what to expect.... and I still don't know how to feel about it?
I have no issues whatsoever with women exploring their sexuality and professing their deepest, darkest fantasies. I think I may have just been taken aback by how quickly these stories took off and was still caught a little off-guard, even as I reached the end of the book.
I do think it's important for society to accept women, their sexuality, and their desires, and I think having a high-profile actress publish stories containing just those things is a step in the right direction.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Want is a collection of women's deepest desires and sexual fantasies. I really enjoyed this - the breadth of fantasies from relatively ordinary to extremely taboo was a lot of fun to read.
WANT is a collection of anonymous confessions from women all around the world about their fantasies, curated by gillian anderson. i felt like this was such a fascinating read and i would love a second collection, because i'm sure there was no shortage of stories to tell! it talked a lot about identity, gender norms, womanhood, etc. i felt like anderson did a fantastic job curating these and i loved reading what she had to say about each collection. i would definitely recommend this book for anyone who's interested in gender and sexuality non-fiction.
thanks to netgalley and abrams for the advanced copy!
I loved this book from start to finish. So refreshing to read about women's' sexual experiences and desires without shame or judgment. Hopefully this can be a catalyst for open conversations. This has been a long time coming (no pun intended)
A thought provoking collection that isn't what you think it's going to be. Yes some of these essays are frankly spicy and steamy, others are more contemplative. It's divided into thematic sections, with each one addressing a different type of, for want of a better word, fantasy or desire - or want. The writing is surprisingly uniform but the women behind it are not. There's something for everyone. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Read this as you would read a short story collection- one or two at a time so as not to be overwhelmed and not to lose the power of the words.
I was really intrigued by what this book promised, but this ended up feeling more like an evaluation and introspection on different fantasies rather than the focus on the individual stories. I didn’t request this to hear about the why, I was thinking this would be more of a collection.
The writing was good but I just think this was not what I expected based on the information
What a remarkably surprising compililation.
I love Gillian Anderson, and being open about sexual preferences and desires. However, I did expect to be primarily salaciously entertained while I read this. While a select many of these submissions were indeed titillating, some of them made me cry, others made me stare at the wall in deep thought about what it means to be a woman. In many ways, some of the submissions weren't really about sex at all, but instead revealed truths about how we want to be perceived, how our pasts influence our affect.
Some of the submissions were so beautifully written I found myself wondering if poets had en masse decided to submit to Gillian.
I really, really enjoyed this read. Take your time with it-- read one each night before you fall asleep for some intense nighttime speculation. Or, read one every morning, with a steaming mug of tea, while the sun rises and step briefly into the mind of another human on this Earth and find that you understand them completely.
