At the request of the Medical Examiner in Washington, Tempe investigates the remains of 4 people who died in a fire. While searching for the bodies, Tempe finds another body in the sub-basement. The woman had been murdered many years before and left in a burlap bag. Of course, Tempe’s investigation leads her to an old conflict.
Kathy Reichs involves Temperance Brennan, forensic anthropologist,, in a series of fires in Washington, DC, that resulted in multiple dead bodies heavily damaged in the fires. She is roped into the investigation as a favor to a friend of her daughter. Fire and Bones is an excellent forensic murder mystery. Recommended to all interested in law and order stories.
I have been reading this series for a while now .i haven’t read all the books but the ones I read I enjoyed a lot.
This is book 23 in the Temperance Brennan series and you don’t really have to read the previous book to follow the story.
Anyway, this is a good book. It didn’t take me long to read it because I was so hooked on the story .
I do recommend.
Fire and Bones is the 23rd book in Kathy Reichs "Temperance Brennan" series, one of my all-time favourite series! This novel can also be read as a stand alone.
Temperance Brennan is a forensic anthropologist who is called to Washington DC to consult and identify bodies found at a horrific arson scene. The devastated building is in Foggy Bottom and she teams up with journalist Ivy Doyle to investigate amid mysterious circumstances.
Things quickly become dangerous when they discover the property belonged to a member of a group of bootleggers and racketeers in the 30's and 40's.
I love revisiting "Tempe's" world and being reacquainted with familiar characters. I would have enjoyed more of these characters involved in this story.
All in all a great story!
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for an arc of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Kathy Reichs is a best selling author for a reason and this novel will prove no différent. In Fire And Bones we see Temperance Brennan investigating a house fire in an illegal Air BnB in DC. She’ll discover something that adds an extra element to the case and we’re off and running.
With the perfect amount of suspense and relatable characters and a story/mystery you can’t help but want to know the conclusion of fans of Keith’s Reichs and general mystery fans will enjoy this novel.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I'll start by saying that I've been a fan of Tempe Brennan ever since her first book.
Being from Montreal, this series has a special place in my heart 💚
That being said, this book was exactly what you'd expect from a Kathy Reichs book. Good escapism, some facts on various subjects and a fast paced story.
Did it blow my mind? no. but I enjoyed my time.
3.5⭐
A Firecracker of a mystery!
Temperance Brennan is a forensic anthropologist. She works for the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner in Charlotte, North Carolina. In her latest case, she is consulting on bodies found at an arson fire. Victims of a blaze at a historic building in Foggy Bottom, Washington, DC. The building was owned by bootleggers during prohibition. Although she is dubious that the bootlegger history has any connection to the blaze. Tempe teams up with journalist Ivy Doyle to investigate. Turns out not everyone in Washington is happy to see Tempe. Soon Tempe and Ivy are in a firestorm of suspects and danger!
I enjoy the expertise that Kathy Reichs displays in her writing. When I read her books, I know that the details are correct as she is a forensic anthropologist. She brings so much more to her novels. She encompasses you in the story. Tempe is like an old friend with a fantastic sense of humor, an occasional temper, and a nose for intrigue. Her sayings crack me up! I alternated between laughing out loud and biting my nails at the ratcheting suspense. I recommend you get a copy to devour!
Thanks to Simon & Schuster Canada for access to a digital ARC on NetGalley.
Another fantastic book in this great series. Even after 23 books, I do not tire of the stories, twists and turns that each book takes us on. It is a fabulous read, shorter chapters, enough suspence to keep you guessing and enough characters to love to enjoy the non forensic portion of the stories. I did not want to put this book down and read it so quickly!
In this book, Tempe is pulled into an arson case that ends up pulling her away from her romantic getaway with main squeeze, Ryan. While the more she tries to wrap things up and salvage her weekend, the more the plot thickens!
The dynamics of Tempe and Ryan are so great. The amount of forensics is enough to keep you interested but not to the point of feeling like you need a medical degree to understand. The characters are easy to relate to and the desire for justice for even those long since passed is present.
I highly recommend this book and this series. While you could jump in and read this book, i would recommend starting at the begining so you can fully get into the dynamics that are present. Regardless, pick up the book you will not be disappointed!
Thank you to NetGalley, Kathy Reichs and Simon & Schuster Canada for the ARC. I cannot wait for the next installment!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read in exchange for an honest review.
Another Temperance Brennan book that gives exactly what you expect. Yes, there are a few story lines to follow, but none are so overwhelming that you lose sight of the story. I appreciate how short and quick the chapters are. The story moves at a good clip and is a perfect slump buster.
First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Kathy Reichs, and Simon & Schuster Canada for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Back for another forensic journey with Kathy Reichs, I reached for the latest in the Temperance Brennan series. While Tempe has seen a great deal in her career, fire is surely one of the most difficult and. destructive means of body deterioration. When Tempe is called to Washington to help with a major housefire, she is reluctant, but her experience makes her sought after by local officials. In what begins as an exploration of a large home, Tempe soon finds herself in the middle of a mystery that could have murderous implications. All this, while her love life is anything but flaming, due to her person choices. Reichs delivers once more in this scintillating thriller.
When Temperance ‘Tempe’ Brennan receives a call from an up and coming reporter about an arson in Washington, DC, she is skeptical about serving up her scientific advice. Brennan has no interest in helping, but is soon persuaded to offer her assistance with body identification and forensic processing when the DC Medical Examiner seeks her expertise. While others might be able to do it, Brennan is the top of her field. Reluctantly, Brennan foregoes some personal plans and makes her way to the nation’s capital.
Arriving in Washington, Brennan finds herself in Foggy Bottom, where a large home may have been used as an illegal AirBNB, filled with random individuals. This is one case she hopes to complete quickly.
Clashing with the local fire officials, Brennan makes a name for herself and is eventually permitted access to the scene, only to discover that nothing is quite as it seems. There are many bodies in the ashes, but it is a hidden sub-basement that robes most fruitful. A woman found stuffed into a burlap sack does not appear to be connected to the fire’s victim count.
All this points to something nefarious, which is only strengthened when the property’s owner is revealed. This was murder and Tempe Brennan mighty have stepped into the middle of a massive crime scene. The roving reporter, Ivy Doyle, wants answers and Brennan may have to offer something, when they share accommodations for a period of time.
While she has to cancel her romantic getaway, which has issues of its own, Brennan must forge onwards to help provide answers to the ME. The body in a bag is surely a sign, but there is much more than must be analysed before a formal answer can be presented to the authorities. A second house fire only adds to the concerns and creates a rush for answers that could blow the case wide open.
With Doyle breathing down her neck and the local ME wanting something to offer other local officials, Brennan will have to make some headway. The pressure of the illicit gang activity around town only makes it worse. With a woman who perished so horribly, Brennan is eager to get answers, no matter what it takes. Reichs does a fabulous job highlighting yet another form of forensic anthropology and sends a chilling reality of the rough world of fire and its destructive abilities.
I have long enjoyed the world of Kathy Reichs and her forensic anthropology. Temperance Brennan has always been a favourite protagonist of mine, exploring the world of bodies, forensics, and police work of a sorts. The series moves into the world of fire and its effects on the body, which is new to me (and I cannot remember if a major case had dealt with this in the 22 previous novels). Reichs builds a strong story from the outset, peppering in some strong narrative development and humour along the way. There are key aspects of the story, all of which emerge as things get more scientific and crime-based. The characters, many of whom are new for this novel, play a great role in enriching the story and keeps the reader hooked until all comes together. Humour and banter balance out some of the heftier interactions between them throughout this piece.
Plot points in a series like this are important, though they are usually surrounded by a great deal of scientific evidence. Reichs does well to offer some ‘aha’ moments, some of which are forensics and others plot reveals. Reichs does a wonderful job of building up the tension and finds ways of keeping the reader in the middle of the action. I can only hope that there will be more books to the series, as things are not waning whatsoever and things remain addictive.
Kudos, Madam Reichs, for a great addition to an already strong series.
Kathy Reichs doesn't disappoint with the latest Temperance Brennan novel, Fire and Bones, providing us with a twisty and at time disturbing thriller that keeps the reader turning the pages until the very end.
This time main character Temp is embroiled in an arson case that resulted in the deaths of four innocent lodgers of an illegal short time rental house. Canadians will see similarities to a real fire that occurred in Montreal, Quebec, making the storyline resonate even more. The scientific details of the condition of the victims are graphic and not for the faint of heart, but they are also necessary for the reader to understand the drive Temp feels to solve the case.
The writing is superb, the story fast-paced, and the characters multi-faceted and relatable.
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC of #FireandBones. I highly recommend this book!
