This is a part of a series and I haven't read the other one. I like Scout, and the steps she takes to survive at sea on her own. I did lose track of things that were happening in certain places. But I think kids will like the illustrations and the adventure.
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC.
Very confused overall by this read. The story is presented more as a graphic novel of adventure, but in the end, the book leans heavily to instruction and in a way that is more for adults than for the targeted age group. This is not the first book in the series, so I can't compare with what may work or have worked prior, but for me, this book fell short. I don't think that someone who is Scout's age would actually understand. Even for me, this did not resonate and I am probably the type of person who would want to know how to survive at sea if I were lost before going on a cruise or big sailing adventure.
The artwork is fine. Nothing to rave about, and as with the content, the style tends to be a bit confusing for flow.
There is some promise which is why I gave it 2 stars, but not enough for me to say I would recommend this to friends. Or, correct that, I would recommend a friend get this for a middle schooler in their life.
I love love love this series. It is so engaging and informative. They are all stand alone but with reading them all. We don’t live by large bodies of water and still found it useful information. Kids are fascinated by survival stories and this is a great book to recommend.
What a fun read about survival and boat safety for young readers! I loved all the topics covered and has someone from Florida originally really appreciated the depth and art work that was done to convey all the facts. I can see parents buying this book for their kids who are interested in boats and sailing on Lake Michigan.
Does go in depth of surviving on the water, creating clean fresh water, how wind affects how the boat turns, and navigation at sea by going over longitude and latitude.
Excited to get a physical copy in my hand and show all of the outdoorsy kiddos that I know!
Thank you to NetGalley and Roaring Brook Press for the advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest review.
