This book had tons of cute illustrations. It would be great for a child who gets overwhelmed easily with lots of words on a page. I enjoyed the quick and easy to digest chapters with the true facts interspersed in the graphic novel. The facts were interesting as were the potential inventions that could be made with them. I liked that at the end there were websites that I could go to for further information. I would have liked to have seen some animal inventions that are already being used but that is just my personal preference.

Rebecca Donnelly’s SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST: WHO’S GOT THE BEST MEDICINE? sets up a Shark Tank-style competition in which animals present ways in which their unique adaptations or qualities might be utilized to create a medical innovation that would help humans. From sharks to tardigrades, everyone has an idea to share along with a wisecrack or two. The game show format is used effectively here, providing a different and engaging way to draw readers in and present a range of information in an accessible and organized way. The combination of humor and information about a variety of amazing animal adaptations makes this graphic novel a great choice for readers interested in animals and science.

I thought this was a rather complex graphic novel so, I'm not sure which age range is the target audience. The jokes and puns are geared towards adults while the vocab and science explanations are clearly meant for children. I think this might work as a book for older kids (middle or high school) or adults to read to a child.
The concept is cute - actual anthropomorphized sharks host a game show styled after Shark Tank. It's not about investment in products, only which animal has the best inspiration for a medical remedy or treatment. A winner is declared at the end although there is no concept of criteria or what they might be. While most of the animal participants are predator or prey for each other, the strict "No Eating other contestants" rule keeps things G-rated.

My daughter LOVED this book, she's read it multiple times and always has to keep everyone in the room informed of what she's reading. It's a very fun premise for a graphic novel that is a game show setup. Wonderfully educational and fun for everyone, I'm going to have to get her the first book in this series.
Lovely clear and engaging illustrations as well!

A neat premise, and I will admit that I didn't read the previous books in the series. Definitely can stand alone though which is a plus. There is a lot of information in the story and the format is interesting, but I have to admit that it was also a little odd to me because I really didn't get the survival of the fittest theme. I guess it relates to the prior books, and some of the creatures used their medical properties to protect themselves, but most of the proposed inventions aren't really for survival.

What did I like? Definitely the information presented was unique and something that a young reader wouldn't know. I am sure there are books which teach about the Great White but not sure that it would cover the way that their skin is made to deter bacteria. I also appreciated that there was a section at the end that spoke to the animals and their special skills in more detail.

What didn't work for me? The game show format was not great for flow or, at least, it wasn't great for having the judges float in and out of the story. I also wasn't a huge fan of the artwork because it felt incomplete at times.

Is this a good book for an early reader to pick up to learn about animal science? Sure. And that's probably all it really needs to be to have some traction.

Such an interesting graphic novel! I love how the book presents the creatures one by one as part of a contest. We can learn so much from these amazing creatures that can help us. I learned why the tardigrade can go for years without water and how we can use mosquitos to make less painful shots. So much imagination! Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this

This was an adorable graphic novel for kids who are lovers of animals and science. It featured obscure animal facts and scientific inventions (mostly models at his point), so it would capture the interest of little nerds who have already worked their way through the basics. I sometime have trouble visually following graphic novels due to the pictorial organization, but I found this one easy to follow. The illustrations were whimsical and fun, and prompts for including my spirit animal (the raccoon) in the earlier pages!

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Children's Publishing Group | Henry Holt and Co. (BYR) for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

This book is so fun and so informative. I love the "Shark Tank"- esque style to of the presentations and had absolutely no idea that any of these techniques or natural abilities of the animals/creatures could actually be applied to humans and medicine. It is so important that we recognize the benefits and miraculous things nature has to share with us, so that we are motivated to continue to protect and respect it. This a great lesson to instill young, and this book is a great way to do so.

Survival of the Fittest is a fun graphic novel, shark tank style competition for animals who have special abilities humans could use in making medical invention and advancements. My son is six and really enjoyed the competition aspect and seeing who the winner would be but some parts of it were just slightly beyond him--not enough to not enjoy the book (he loved it!) but he did have questions and for his age it wouldn't be one you could just read (he had questions). I think that makes it a great book for elementary libraries though -- you get a real bang for your buck because patrons as young as Kindergarten will enjoy the story and the pictures and older, upper elementary readers will be able to read it on their own and learn about some of the science as well. This would be a fun addition to a unit on science, medicine, or animals or a fun addition to a classroom, school, or public library. Highly recommend!

“Survival of the Fittest: Who's Got the Best Medicine?” by Rebecca Donnelly is an engaging and informative nonfiction book that explores the fascinating ways animals have evolved to heal themselves in the wild — and how those same strategies have influenced modern medicine. The book provides through clear, engaging text and interesting real-world examples.
This book would make a great addition to any school library, especially for middle-grade readers interested in science, animals, or medicine.

Join Mosquito, Sea Urchin, Octopus and more as they share their unique anatomies and try to impress the sharks. Each will share how they have inspired a medical innovation that might just change the world. With a delightful mix of humor and science, this graphic novel introduces kids to some amazing creatures and shares about real-world designs based on each one. This book is bound to be a hit with animal-lovers and fans of nonfiction graphic novels, like the Science Comics series.

I read this book with my 6 year old son. He thought it was funny and loved learning the information. I also think my 2nd grade students would like this book as well. We are looking forward the the 2nd book.

A sweet graphic novel that introduces some of the amazing capabilities of wildlife and how some of those abilities have been applied to today’s medicine. There are fun jokes and illustrations. As someone who often struggles with graphic novels this was very straight forward.

If Shark Tank had actual sharks! This informative graphic novel series handles animal adaptations in a fun and engaging way for our young learners.

In this installment, animals are competing in a Shark Tank-esque reality show by pitching their ideas for medical technology. Perfect for our animal-loving, elementary-age readers!

Requested this book on NetGalley for my 9-year-old animal lover. Here are this thoughts:

This is a very good book. It's about different types of things humans could use that are based off of animal abilities. It's funny, and it's also an educational book that I'd suggest to some doctors or people who develop tools for doctors because it has a lot of things that would really help the human world. I would recommend this book to animal lovers (like me!) or people who are interested in science (also like me!).

Note: I received a review copy of this book via NetGalley.

Planning to post on Amazon after publication.

My sons love to learn animal facts, and this graphic novel is perfect for them, with some familiar facts as well as new facts about biomedicine. I think this will be a good choice for reluctant readers who are interested in science and non-fiction, but enjoy funny graphic novels as well.
