3.5 stars. This is really a recap of some of the events/points of the Jan 6 insurrection, but actually also covers some of Trump's 4 years, from start to finish.... It's presented in a play script form, using satire (& dry humor!), as if the Grim Reaper & Satan are in the room with Trump, & he's trying to convince them to allow him to keep wreaking havoc in the world. It's a short read, & easy to follow along. In the Acknowledgements at the end the author referenced the artwork in the book, but my digital ARC didn't have the illustrations included, so I can't speak to that aspect.
I received a digital ARC from publisher ARPress via NetGalley for review purposes. These are my own opinions, fair & honest....
In this satirical portrayal, Trump is depicted as inactive during the January 6th Capitol siege. After his rally speech, he relaxes at the White House, engrossed in TV. The Grim Reaper appears, prompting Trump to summon Satan, showcasing his supposed highlights. Only Trump perceives the Grim Reaper and Satan; Ivanka, Mark Meadows, and Pat Cipollone visit without awareness. Despite its fictional nature, the play encourages reflection on Trump's 187 minutes of apparent inaction. It humorously juxtaposes reality and satire, prompting pondering about what truly occurred.
When I first started reading, I thought okay, this is just exactly what happened. Then the Grim Reaper showed up, trying to collect Trump, and then Satan, and Trump argued that even though he lost the election, he was still doing Satan's work. This is political satire, and it's funny, but because of the style, I was chuckling and thinking that this was actually a plausible explanation of what happened on January 6. Ridiculous, maybe, but Trump selling his soul to be the president was the most plausible explanation I've seen for how he could become president. If you need to laugh at this chaos, check out this play.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
