This compilation is a compact and very readable account of some of the significant battles of the 20th century, some of which relied on several factors that ensured victory for the Allies and if any one of those factors had failed would have resulted in a very different world today. There have been many accounts of the battles in this book, however the author delves more deeply into the main players and leaders involved as well as critical details that do not normally get prominence. This last point is what makes these accounts all the more stimulating by filling in the readers knowledge of the background to the overall struggle.
A great read for the wartime historian that shed new light on our recent military history.

Yet another book tackling the stories and story of World War II, but "The Fight of Their Lives" seems to be unable to decide what format to utilize. There are narrative portions, profiles of individuals both well-known and obscure, and multi-page timelines that offer a way to zip through the build-up to key events, all mixed together in a rather inexplicable manner. The overall structure is unfortunately typical for WWII titles, with the first 40% about the war in Europe and Africa, the middle portion about the Manhattan Project and various ancillary topics, then the last 40% about the war in the Pacific / Asia. What's wrong with this approach is that there's no sense that they all happened simultaneously, and for a book that even includes timelines, this is a frustrating omission. Still, if you are unfamiliar with the lead-up to the war and how it progressed around the planet, this offers a lot of well-written, albeit disorganized information.

A good documentary of WW2 with great explanations of some of the major battles and political intrigues. However. I was disappointed with the author over-looking the major contributions of the US Navy submarine force and how they strangled the Japanese supply lines. Other than that, it is a good read that is easily understood.

What a great read! Thank you, Mr. Kutler, for a concise refresher course on why the participants in WWII are called the greatest generation. Although upsetting at times, this book should be required reading in all American High Schools and Colleges, because the young people of today do not match up! I received an ARC from NetGalley, and the opinions expressed are my own.

Seen very much from an American perspective and view (us Brits get a mention!) this book tells us again of the bloody conflict of WWII and just what it took to deny Hitler. An addition to the many written on the subject in the 80+ years since.

This was a wonderful book. I really enjoyed reading it. Unlike many books of its type, it didn't focus on only one aspect or theater of the war. It gave a broader perspective that allowed the reader to better understand the entire war effort at one time and how everything fit together. Anyone with an interest in WWII should read this book. I really hate to give any book a 5-star rating since nothing is perfect, but this book deserves it.
