Some beautiful, profound and heartfelt prayers to incorporate into your daily devotions and plenty of sermon material as well. Recommended.
I am a big fan of "The Valley of Vision" by Arthur Bennett and had hopes that this book would be similar. Sadly it was unable to capture the same style and tone of that volume. It does provide insight into the prayers of familiar and forgotten heroes of the faith from the reformation period. I did share it with someone else who did enjoy the book and incorporated it into their daily devotions.
An excellent daily reference book to dip into at leisure and helps to explore our faith and spirituality
I really like this, and I would recommend it especially as reading for Reformation Month. If I had to critique this, I wish the book would have cited its sources more rigorously (rather than just a bibliography at the end of the book) and more Reformation liturgy to provide more context for the prayers (rather than isolated prayers), but that goes towards the pitch and concept of the book. For what the book purports to do, provide a compilation of historical Christian prayers from the Reformation for a variety of contexts, this book does a good job.
My goodness, this book is fab.
I was first really tipped off to prayer books in a class at my then church; the pastor was (is!) a big fan of Arthur Bennett's The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions. I stumbled across a copy of that book while cleaning out my grandma's house sometime later, and absolutely loved it. Since then, I've had an especial appreciation for this sort of book!
_Grace from Heaven_ particularly stood out to me as it focuses on prayers written by the Reformers--whether British or continental European. I'm hoping, God willing, to go on a Reformation tour with my church next year, so my interest was certainly piqued here!
It's quite a collection of prayers--and of pray-ers. :) I loved the variety of both authors and topics, and was pleasantly surprised in its scope. Obviously not a book to be read straight through like a novel, but one that can come alongside quiet times, Bible study, and just life in general.
A wonderful compilation. 5/5 stars.
I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
If you enjoyed Piercing Heaven and Found of Heaven you will enjoy this resource. Grace from Heaven is a book with prayers from the reformation and a great resource to look on when we can’t think of what ti pray for or who. Some of the prayers are longer than others but they are so beautiful and, in my opinion, needed even more for the time we are living in.
I highly recommend adding this treasure of a book to your reading list.
I graciously received an advance e-copy from Netgalley for review. All opinions are my own.
