Really enjoyed this book
5 stars
will certainly read more from this author
I’ve never read anything by this author. Huge thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this one. It was just released last month. The book started very slowly and then was too quick at the end. I needed more at the end to sum things up and it was lacking on that. Unlikeable characters in my opinion. It was ok and overall this had a good plot.
I needed a binge-worthy psychological suspense thriller and this one delivered, with the added bonus of domestic drama. I appreciated the dual point-of-view of Emerson-recently released from an institution after her daughter dies during a suspected home invasion and Talia-the now mother figure to Emerson’s son and girlfriend of Emerson’s ex-husband.
I appreciated the attention brought forth on sleep disorders and how it can affect one’s views and/or personality. There were some twists that kept my interest throughout. The narrators did a great job portraying both of the unlikable female main characters!
A nice thriller with a few twists. A mother is put into a treatment hospital after the death of her daughter. She has night terrors that can’t be explained. After her treatment ends she wants to see he remaining son again. Her ex-husband’s girlfriend isn’t thrilled with this. A lot goes down
This psychological thriller is addictive & gripping.
I immediately sided with Emerson. I’ve come to think that my pick for favorite character is because my mind goes to the first person’s point of view I get. However, I won’t spoil if I was right to trust my instinct or not. I’ll leave that for you to find out when you read this! And it’s a good one!!
Superb narration by Lauryn Allman, Amelia Sciandra!
Thank you, Cara Reinard, Bookouture, Bookouture audio & netgalley for my copy & audiobook! All opinions are my own.
Emerson (ex-wife) and Talia (current girlfriend) tell the story from their alternating points of view. Emerson is recovering from a stay in the mental health hospital and desperately seeking access to her young son, Leo, but Talia is doing all she can to prevent access and keeping Emerson away from Shep and Leo.
A dark, twisted thriller that takes you on a rollercoaster ride of a story. You feel for Emerson and the circumstances she is in, hoping she gets the happy outcome she deserves.
THIS BOOK WAS INSANE! You can't trust no one!!
So Emerson has been in an institution over the death of her daughter. She has night terrors and they think she fell during a terror and killed her daughter. She wants her family back but her husband Shep moved on to someone he worked with and she is standing in the way of Emerson getting access to her son, a little boy who barely remembers her.
Talia sees Leo as her son and her duty to protect him from his unstable mother and she goes to some insane lengths to keep them apart!
It was fast paced and heart poundingly exciting! Best Thriller I have listened to in ages!
Well written and I loved the ending! Brilliant!!
5 stars
I LOVE LOVE LOVED this story! 10 out of 10 hands down. The multiple perspective provides what feels like insider information into this story. I found myself really disliking characters, because they were so well developed. The ending was a twist that I absolutely did not expect, and found myself having visceral reactions. I cannot wait to read more from Cara Reinard, as I found this to be incredibly written. Huge thank you to Cara Reinard, NetGalley, and Bookouture Audio for this advanced copy.
Good thriller that kept me occupied on the long commute to and from work. Narrator suited the story and characters. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance audio copy.
Not sure what happened.
I downloaded this book to the NG app. A week later I went to listen to it and it had vanished.
Spoke to Kim Nash. No one knows why this happened.
The same happened with a previous Bookoutour audio book. Re-download the NG app, still not there.
So I’m unable to read it.
My previous audio was fine from Bookoutour and other publishers audios are fine.
Maybe a glitches?
The extract sounds tempting
I found this book to be about average. It wasn't amazing, but it wasn't a "how did this get published" kind of book either. IMO.
I can definitely see why and how many people enjoyed it. The plot was interesting and there were twists and turns, but for me, the characters were annoying and too off=putting. The girlfriend.... oh my gosh- the narration for her was on point because her voice was perfect for how obnoxious she was.
There needed to be a little more closure at the end for me, I would have liked a little bit more suspense, but I can see why people enjoyed this- it just wasn't for me. Please don't let my opinion of this book stop you from trying it, it had a pretty decent plot, and the narration was great, it just wasn't for me.
Loved it! Five enthusiastic stars for super suspense and twisty twists! Can't wait for Cara's next book.
After an accident that led to the death of her youngest child and the end of her marriage, Emerson is working hard to pick up the pieces. She is determined to win back custody of her son by attending therapy for her mental health and night terrors, but her ex-husband’s new girlfriend, Talia, is standing in the way. Both women will do whatever it takes to get what they want which leads to devastating consequences.
This is a fast-paced and gripping thriller. I love that the chapters alternate between Emerson and Talia’s perspectives. Even though Emerson’s night terrors and mental health make her an unreliable narrator, the author sets her up as a sympathetic character and frames Talia as the antagonist. I thought the reveal was a bit far-fetched, but the ending wraps up the story nicely. It’s not a perfect, happy ending, but it’s a realistic ending for all of the characters. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture Audio, and Cara Reinard for this free ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I just finished listening to this on audio. I enjoyed the narrator very much. I kept listening to the book while I was cleaning the house, walking the dog, keeping cool at the pool. I think the story was well written and I was anxious to find out who the "bad guys" were in this. I knew nothing would be as it seemed and yes, this story came to a conclusion that I did not see coming. I loved the direction it took. When I thought I had things figured out, well....I was proved wrong and that is exactly what I like and want from the books I read. Keep me guessing!
Emerson, has just been released from a secure psychiatric hospital where she was admitted following the tragic death of her young daughter. While she was there, her husband Shep divorced her and moved in his new partner and colleague Thalia.
Shep and Thalia have moved from the home he share with Emerson and his son Leo and deceased daughter and started a new life, which is thrown into turmoil with the release of Emerson. She wants to gain access of their son and has to prove she is capable of looking after him. She has to attend therapy, and visit a psychiatrist, and attend a court hearing to decide if she is allowed to have visitation with Leo
Thalia is desperate to stop this from happening and struggles to understand why Shep isn’t also doing everything in his power to stop these visits. Does he still love Emerson?
Thalia has a secret of her own, and will stop at nothing to stop Emerson from ruining her relationship with Shep.
I found this an interesting yet confusing story. Thalias story seemed to be left hanging at the end as the story came to its conclusion and I felt disappointed not to find out how things developed for her, maybe there’s a further story in the pipeline.
Some of the characters felt like they could be developed more, where as other felt overdeveloped and then seemed to reach no conclusion
This wa my 1st story by this author and I am keen to see if there is more, which may follow on from this, which may make this make more sense
This book got better as it went on. I liked the multiple POV aspect but was disappointed that we only got one character’s perspective at the end. Strange to hear from two voices throughout and only one at the finish. I was quite surprised by the ending, though it felt disjointed and a bit rushed compared to the rest of the book. I was left with questions.
All in all, an entertaining read.
3.7 rounded up to 4.
Talia sees herself as Leo’s new mother, she wants this life, she needs this life she must not lose this life! She wants to be married to Shep and to be Leo’s new mother. There just seems to be one problem….Emerson. She will do whatever it takes to have Emerson’s life.
Emerson is trying to get her life back after being sent to an institution following the death of her daughter Thea. When she is released from the hospital Emerson returns home only to see a new woman living in her there. It seems she was replaced as a mother and wife by her husband’s new girlfriend, Talia. But she just can’t seem to shake the feeling that she was not responsible for Thea’s death, she is convinced that there was a man in the house that night. Can Emerson figure out what happened that fateful night and can she get her life back? Or will she find out that the people she might have wronged want to ruin her life?
Overall rating 4/5
The dynamic between the characters is palpable! I loved the duel POVs that gave such insight to both sides of a volatile situation. But how Reinard can make you feel empathy for both sides. And the twist at the end made for such an unpredictable twist. I would love to see a POV from the passive Shep just to see what he was truly thinking the whole time. Also a huge shout out to Allman and Sciandra for making the woman in this story truly shine, and making the reader feel the mental states of each character.
*Thank you to Cara Reinard, Lauryn Allman, Amelia Sciandra, Bookouture Audio, and Netgalley for the audio copy. I am freely leaving my honest review.
I listened to an advanced copy of the audiobook of Caa Reinard's The Wife at the Window thanks to the publisher and Netgalley. I enjoyed this book, although I'd say there were two issues - a bit of a slow start and it took a while for me to get a sense of where the story was going - and then at the end - the book came to too quick of an end. The book had picked up steam, got very interesting, then in what seemed to be the last 25 pages it all came together, too quickly. I liked the story - I like where the book was going, I wanted the end to have been spread out a bit more. The book uses the alternating character motif, which is fine, if a bit tired at time, but for this story, it worked.
The narrator was good and the audiobook flowed well. I've probably read 400 audiobooks, and while this narrator was not in the top tier, I think she did a solid job with it, and that was a positive.
Is the book worth reading? Yes, Just know it will all come together quickly, so see if you can figure some of the pieces out before hand.
I really enjoyed this domestic thriller from Cara Reinard! The premise is strong: Emerson Wilder has been in a psychiatric hospital following the accidental death of her daughter, and Talia Davenport has inserted herself into Emerson's former life, living with Emerson's ex-husband Shep and their son Leo. When Emerson is released, it's clear she is willing to work hard in order to be reunited with Leo, and that Talia is willing to stop at nothing to prevent Emerson from upsetting the balance of her new, perfect family.
The characters were unlikeable, every single one - but to me that's a good thing here! I knew I was supposed to root for Emerson, but she didn't make it easy: she wasn't the strong-willed mother I am used to in these types of stories, despite the ferocity with which she was ready to fight for her son. She made some choices that were not only questionable but just irritating to me-I guess that means she's human! Talia had my sympathies for a brief moment, before I realized she is one of the worst characters of all: she acts better than everyone else, but she's the rotten apple of the bunch for a variety or reasons. Shep is bland, kind of pathetic, but I think that's on purpose - he's not the prize either of these women believe he is, but we don't know that until they do. Leo is cute, in the way kid characters are, although he acts a bit older than 4 in my opinion.
I have less to say about the setting of this novel only because it's a fairly standard domestic drama, which takes place in New York City and surrounding areas. Most scenes take place at work and home, with Emerson's individual and group therapy sessions making an appearance.
This story though, was far more than I expected. The drama between Emerson and Talia was not unusual, but learning about both of these women's pasts, and the way their presents are linked together, was what made the story exciting to me. I never would have expected the twist, but flipping back through the book I could see the subtle clues and hints that lead us to our ultimate ending. I wasn't disappointed by the twist, but rather engaged as I waited to find out how the pieces fit together, and I think people who are often spoiled by figuring out the ending too soon would enjoy the different feel of this novel.
My biggest gripe, and I have to say it (contains non-specific spoiler) is that we are told to believe that a character with a facial scar "used to be beautiful" and I find it disappointing and reductive to insinuate that being scarred makes someone no longer beautiful.
Trigger warnings for this book (includes spoilers): Mental illness and hospitalization, infant death, mentions of suicide
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the ARC.
Really enjoyed this book! Couldn't stop listening. Well written, lots of twists and unexpectedness. Love the twist at the end. Narrators were great.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for providing me with an ARC
