I always really enjoy the atmosphere that this author creates with their stories and settings. There is always a perfect mix of supernatural and reality.
Goosebumps! Especially towards 85 percent of the book!
Wow! I am quite impressed with the book. I really love it when the characters are honest about themselves and their feelings, especially when it comes to high stakes YA fantasy. The writing exactly provides this for which I am really quite happy with.
The writing is really fast paced and not a word wasted I say!
Dovie can feel the skeletons of mysterious dead bodies until she united them with their loved ones.
Shadows keep haunting her best friend, Lo, until he has to find answers for the mrdered hikers.
More people are disappearing for the past few years and now they have to do something about it using their gifted (or are they cursed?!) abilities to find the truth and prevent further harm.
I just couldn’t stop reading the book and it is perfect for the spooky season! Wish the book was already available so I could tell everyone I know to get the book today itself!
You can expect friends to lovers but I would tell you not to expect much romance from the book. I really appreciate it when romance is not forced onto the characters especially when the characters are not ready to be serious about their relationship.
Yes, the ending is quite satisfactory and you will like how things go despite all the chaos they faced in their crazy harrowing journey.
One of the most enjoyable thrilling YA books I read this year.
TW for gory descriptions of mrdr/dead bodies.
Thank you, G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers, for the ARC.
This book is an emotional rollercoaster that digs deep into the human experience. The pacing is perfect, with enough suspense to keep you guessing while allowing for poignant moments of reflection. By the end, I was completely invested in Dovie’s journey and rooting for her to uncover the truth, even as danger lurked around every corner. If you’re looking for a hauntingly beautiful read that will keep you turning pages late into the night, this is it! It’s a compelling blend of gothic elements, rich storytelling, and heartfelt emotion that deserves all the love and attention. Truly unforgettable!
This book captures everything I love about southern gothic thrillers. It’s eerie, atmospheric, and drenched in mystery. The writing is both sharp and haunting, painting a vivid picture of a town on edge, where the dead don’t rest and the past refuses to stay hidden. What I truly love about this story is how it blends supernatural elements with raw, human emotion.
The themes of uncovering long-buried truths, the power of the past, and confronting your fears are seamlessly woven into the narrative. Every moment feels like a build-up to something dark and inevitable, and the slow-burn dread kept me hooked. It’s surely a book that lingers in your mind long after you finish, and I loved every haunting, tension-filled moment of it.
This book was done so well in the area of mystery and thriller, like I couldn't stop reading it! It was so eerie and always had me guessing on the killer of these lost dead bodies! I think the monster in the woods could use a bit more detail, I think it has more potential to be more bewildering. This book was so immersive and had such good spooky imagery. The familial aspect to this was so endearing and tied the knot. I also really enjoyed the setting of this book, it made the familial aspect shine a lot more. The curse between Lo and Dove was not needed nor did it serve purpose, I honestly forget about it. I think Dove not believing in magic was unique even with her skill although what would've helped strength this connection would be more feeling behind this. I think her believing in magic could elevate it as well although not needed if not desired. I think it's worth a mention to add the Xan and Dove romance more sooner since it felt a bit rushed even if Dove picked Lo in the end.
This was so gripping. I loved watching them work together to figure this out, and once they realized they were hearing the hikers I was hooked!
Dove can find the bones of missing hikers when they call to her. This crazy thriller that takes place in the Ozarks kept me turning the pages. So many mysteries to be solved. I really enjoyed this book
This might be my favorite Ginny Myers Sain book. I just really really really loved this eerie power the main character has, she feels a sort of singing in her body that leads her to the bones of the dead where they are buried. Some of those people have laid there for weeks. She's been helping her sheriff find the bodies of missing hikers. Another fascinating aspect to this book is her friendship with Lo, who comes back to town at the start of the book. He can visibly see the ghosts of the people she's finding. Together they have to stop who is causing those deaths.
Big thank you NetGalley and to the publisher for the chance to review this book pre-release. You know you can rely on Ms Myers Sain to deliver a great thrilling story with a touch of the supernatural, and When the Bones Sing was no exception. I love her way of building the environments and atmosphere of the story, and literally can not pick which one of her stories I like the most! Can't wait to add this one to my shelves! A more formal review will be available on my IG/TikTok and Goodreads.
When the Bones Sing is a delightful YA paranormal tale. The world-building is well done, and both Dovie and Lo come across as well-developed characters who grow throughout the story. It was a fairly simple and easy read, but it was entertaining, and I didn't guess the true culprit behind the killings until close to the reveal, which shows the mystery was well-structured. The paranormal elements added depth without overshadowing the human interactions and emotions. I would certainly pick up other books by this author in the future. I am giving it a solid four stars.
This was sooooo good. I loved the story, the world building and meeting the different characters. I felt completely immersed in the story and couldn't stop reading it.
Thank you to Penguin Teen for my arc!
Welp first 2025 release out of the way and like I expected it was fantastic. If you have not picked up any Ginny Myers Sain books what are you doing? They’re fantastic YA thrillers perfect to read during summer and When the Bones Sing was no different. It has a super eerie atmosphere, the friends to lovers romance, missing parent. I loved every minute.
Highly reccomend!
