I enjoy finding new authors and Laura Henry's debut was a treat. Fun, quick, easy, beach read. The two main characters were fun to get to know and the sisters in their lives rounded out the story nicely. Can't wait to read about the sisters. Thank you Netgalley for the early access.
I loved plot here, having a one night stand and then realising they are your new boss. Overall this book was easy to read.
I had the pleasure of reading an ARC of this book through NetGalley and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is based on the trope of two women getting together only to find out later they are working with each other. Audrey Adams breaks up with her cheating ex through a classic karaoke break-up song and finds comfort with Toni Danzig that night, a beautiful hiking guide that turns her world upside down. Audrey is done with romance, but when she starts a new job she finds that Toni is part-owner of the business. The two are forced to work together and keep their connection under control.
The writing is fantastic with times where you will laugh out loud. You will find yourself hoping for the couple to finally get together, despite Audrey trying to protect herself from another broken heart. If you are a fan of forced proximity romances, you will definitely enjoy this one.
What happens when you run into your one night stand on your first day at a new job? For Toni and Audrey the answer is to try to keep things professional.
This was a good quick read, which I enjoyed. I thought that is could have used a bit more depth to fully flesh out the characters, but it makes for a light and easy beach read.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quick easy read.
I received a free copy from Bookouture through Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
This was such a fun romance read! I thought the writing style was great, the plot line kept me genuinely interested and I loved each and every one of the characters. I especially enjoyed the found family aspect within the storyline, those are always my favorite within romance stories. The only thing I felt was missing from this one was a resolution or more information on how Willa’s portion of the story ended.
Overall this was a great, easy read. It checked all the boxes for a heartwarming love story for me!
This book started off so well and then it just felt stilted and left me super disengaged.
I wish I could have more to comment on this.
About Last Night surprised me in the best way! It was spicy, heartwarming, and so much fun to read! I would have loved a more fleshed-out ending to the story -- but I was so glad to see that there would be a sequel with Willa & Greta's story! Will definitely add this one to my recommendation list for sapphic romance reads!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
A solid 3 star! This was a fluffy lesbian romance palette cleanser book. A true entertainment read, but I genuinely had interest in the plot as well. I enjoyed the friendship and sister relationships and came to love things about all of the characters. The spice was good but not overdone. I enjoyed it for what it was and would definitely love a book in the POVs of Willa and Greta!
This story centers on Audrey Adams, a woman who just got out of a toxic relationship, and Toni Danzig, a person who has never been in a relationship. Audrey and Toni have both been attracted to the other for years, and on the night of Audrey's big breakup finally meet, hookup, and go their separate ways. Only to find out that Audrey is the new consultant for Toni's family's company.
There were many parts of this story that I thought were cute; however, I often felt like our characters weren't taking the time to get to really know each other. This book was very much instalove, and instead of us seeing two characters fall into love, let alone like, it felt more like reading about lust (which is totally fine, just not what I was expecting with a romcom). I wish there had been a bit more character development between our two MCs; however, I really enjoyed the side characters and seeing how both Audrey's and Toni's sisters connect and they form a foursome and all manage to bring the best out of each other, so I understand why there may have not been as much focus on our MCs alone. The story ends on Audrey and Toni getting their HEA but does leave it open for a second (or third) book for the rest of the group.
Overall this was a very quick read (I read it all in a day: a chunk over my lunch break and then after I put my kid down for bed time), and if you're looking for a lighthearted, quick romcom with some spice, this is your book.
"About Last Night" chronicles Audrey Adams' fresh start after leaving her cheating ex with a bang—singing a break-up anthem in a packed bar. Despite swearing off romance after a memorable night with a breathtaking hiking guide, Toni, Audrey's resolve is tested when she unexpectedly encounters Toni on her first day at a new job in an outdoors store. Complicating matters further, Toni is now technically her boss, and Audrey finds herself reminiscing about their passionate night every time Toni appears in a tempting plaid shirt, discussing upcoming mountain conquests. As Audrey grapples with the taboo of office romance, she navigates this new beginning with cautious optimism.
The novel offers alternating perspectives from Audrey and Toni, allowing readers to delve deep into their likable and evolving characters. While the story moves swiftly, some readers may crave additional chapters for further character development. Overall, I found the book delightful and eagerly anticipate more tales from Willa and Greta. This sapphic romance is a blend of humor, steaminess, and heartfelt moments, making it a must-read upon its release in July.
A heartfelt thank you to Laura Henry, Bookouture, and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Mark your calendars for its release on 7/19/2024—I'll be posting my review on Amazon!
I enjoyed this book with its twists and turns, both in the plot points and in the unexpected actions of the characters at times. The structure of alternating narrators works well and keeps the flow of the story. Henry is skilled at infusing the sexual chemistry and tension with a lot of heart and humor. While she fleshes out the characters of Audrey, Toni, and Willa really well, Greta fell a bit flat for me. I felt like I learned more about her from what other characters said, rather than her own words and actions. Overall, a quick and enjoyable read!
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC
3/5 stars
Boss lady Audrey Adams has given her toxic, cheating ex the flick, and has had the most incredible one night stand with the hot DJ and hiking guide, Toni.
Ready for her next chapter in life, Audrey and her sister, Greta, take on a new job and new client as consultants, but lo and behold, guess who Audrey runs into on the very first day? Toni. Who is also Audrey’s new boss.
This was a cute, easy, very quick read, so if you’re after:
- A feel-good palette cleanser
- Decent amount of humour
- Sapphic spice
- A wholesome sibling relationship (I have two sisters, so books with sisters who would do anything for each other really get me in the feels)
- A villain you will actually DETEST (wow Shae is a piece of work)
I do believe this is a book for you to add to your TBR!
The only thing is it IS short. Just over 200 pages, I felt like some of the character development was missing, the romance between the main characters escalated very quickly, and I felt like I was left hanging with one of the side characters / storylines (I think an epilogue was needed to close the loop or hook the reader in more).
If Laura Henry’s intention is for this to be part of an interconnected series, I will 100% read the next one, ESPECIALLY if Greta is up next.
I don’t DNF arcs, but I was sorely tempted on this one. It took me a week to get through, which is telling.
I never expected this novel to be something I adored, but I was incredibly disappointed anyway.
The characters to me were a little bit shallow, and I had trouble distinguishing Toni and Audrey. They sounded very much the same both dialogue and internal thought-wise. I also didn’t feel very much chemistry between them. It was most them lusting after each other that created the entire foundation, and I wasn’t convinced when they actually got together. They also lacked the ability to communicate overall, so I’m not convinced they should actually have been together.
I also thought Toni deserved better.
I liked a couple of the side characters but was unsatisfied with their unresolved and undiscussed plots. They also didn’t have much depth besides being related to the MCs, which was likewise disappointing.
The plot dragged a little bit in the middle for me, and the ending was fine if unremarkable.
There was, as I mentioned, a lot of lusting, and with that, a lot of sex (especially considering the length of the book). Maybe that was the point of the novel—the spice. But I don’t think it supported the plot very well at all.
Overall, not my kind of story.
For me, I enjoyed this book. I thought it was sweet, sexy, and fun. It wasn’t too long or too short and the perfect amount I think for the story we got.
I have to admit. At first when I first got into this book. I thought it was going to be all spice and no plot and I got worried but of course, as the story went on, and we got to see the dynamics between the character Audrey and Toni and slowly see their relationship blossom into something lovely I was hooked.
I must say, though. I was gasping to find out what happened between Willa and Greta and I needed to know.
I was so invested in that little side thing they had going that I was eager to find out more there.
So fingers crossed we hear something soon. I need to know!!
Thank you to NetGalley for the arc
I enjoyed reading this book and read it in 2 days. However, I felt the book was too short and didn't cover the story in enough detail, there were several parts of the story which were quickly told in between incidents in the book rather than being told in full.
The chemistry between the main 4 characters was very good and kept me interested as well as the cliffhanger of what happened between Willa and Greta.
I felt some of the language and dialog used through some of the scenes was uneccesary and made it quite cringey. This made it harder to immerse into the book.
Overall, I think the story has potential but felt rushed and clumsy.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me an opportunity to read this book!
About Last Night was a funny, sexy, emotional read. I had a lot of fun in both Audrey and Toni's heads! As a couple, they complemented each other really well and I found myself getting annoyed that they couldn't see that themselves. I was relieved when they finally got together.
This book is a breeze to read - it's not super long, and the pace moves VERY quickly. I have seen some other reviews say that's to the story's detriment but I wholeheartedly disagree! I loved that it moved so fast. We weren't bogged down in details we didn't need or reading every single moment of the characters' lives. We just got what was needed to tell the story between these two characters, and it was very effective.
The supporting cast for this story is also excellent. Willa and Greta make a great team at getting their respective sisters to sort their stuff out. I found myself intrigued by Max - I would have loved more depth on Max and Toni's friendship, if anything. Toni's parents are beyond charming and Shae makes for a villain you love to hate.
I noticed when flicking through the final pages that the author mentioned Willa and Greta's story will be told next. I can't wait! I will be eagerly looking out for it, because I loved this book.
My expectation of this book where high, the cover looks brilliant which is always a important fact for me and the blurb sounded so good, the story started out very strong but couldnt hold up this expectations trough the book. Its described as "an utterly hilarious, feel-good, forced proximity, lesbian romantic comedy" i missed a bit the comedy aspect in this story, it was all over the place and over the top, but not really comedy.
Audrey and Toni were not looking for a relationship, Audrey just left by her Ex didnt look for a rebound but a bit of fun she was all up to, enter Toni who she saw from afar a few times already, they hit it up and have a one-night stand. Only to realize a few days later that they're going to be working together. They desided to remain professional and pretend the one-night stand never happened,
Than it started to get strange, they all hang out for christmas at Toni's parent's house together with their sisters, their is no real reason, while trying to stay professional to stay at each others places?! Altrough they wanted both to keep it casual Toni freaks Audrey out by convessing her love and wanting to be togehter forever - totally strange for a story that claims to be against insta-love, After Audrey running both sisters (her own and Tonis) threath her like shit - i mean for real!? This is more than unrealistic when both desided to keep it casual first, than stop it instantly when they know they work togehter - how is Audrey a bad person she is made in this book - when she is honest as she was the whole time about her intentions. I guess this injustice rubbed me the wrong way, from that moment on the book was lost for me and i couldnt enjoy it anymore.
After this Toni behaved like a child by posting stuff with different woman on her socials, to make Audrey jealous, than Toni wants to hook up again - it just got stranger by every page -at least for me.
Therefore 3 stars because the writing style of this author is good, the edit was good (which is often not the case in lgbtqi fiction) it was therefore easy to read, just the storyline itself was so not what i hoped and expected.
Thank you to Bookouture and Netgally for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
Marketed as a romcom but missing the 'com' part - unfortunately a disappointment for me! Characters had little to no personality, no believable chemistry, and hard to see why this qualifies as a grand gesture-worthy love story rather than just two people finding each other somewhat attractive. Dialogue felt forced and awkward which made it hard to read. It was a shame that even though the story is set in Denver there were few local details - it could have taken place in any town, & as someone who used to live there I was hoping to feel more immersed in the setting.
I managed to finish the book hoping it would improve - such a shame as it had potential, but the characters and writing style did not keep me invested at all.
Thoroughly enjoyed this novel! 4 and a half stars! Audrey splits from her ex who is ridiculously high maintenance and ends up on a night out meeting Toni, who has noticed Audrey in the past. Only it becomes awkward when Audrey then meets Toni at her new workplace. Great characterisation and a really excellent feel good novel. Thanks to Net Galley for the advanced copy
I didn't enjoy this one as much as I'd hoped. It was a quick read, and the sex scenes were fun, but I had trouble rooting for Aubrey and Toni. From the premise I was expecting there to be more of a balance between internal and external stakes, but as much as the characters made a big deal about the fact that they were working together it really didn't seem like much of an issue. They were always on two completely different pages about what they wanted out of the relationship, and by the end of the book I'd lost patience for that, in part because I wasn't sure what had changed on Aubrey's end other than her feeling bad about how she'd treated Toni. (Which, omg, so much second hand embarrassment.) This one just unfortunately wasn't for me.
