This was an adorable read! I loved the artwork and also the story itself. It was silly but also accurate for how kids would act if they were jealous. Very cute, and I can't wait to see the book in person when my library purchases it!
Unicorn (and Horse) is a super silly picture book about an Unicorn, who seemingly has everything, and a Horse.. who does not.
The illustrations are adorable, and the writing was so engaging! I loved everything about this book. The book starts by comparing the unicorn & horse, but then takes a left turn into some high-stakes action, and that was super fun!
Overall, I thought this was a great read and a truly fun book. Thanks to NetGalley, Familius, and David Miles for the chance to read & review!
My daughter loved this book, especially the “horse is not” parts. The unicorn vs horse farts were her favorite part. The art was lovely. The message of the story heartfelt. Thank you netgalley for the earc
If you work with children or have a child, you have probably encounter Horse Girls and Unicorn Girls. Sometimes, they are one and the same. Other times... not so much! I teach elementary ESL/ELL and I have plenty of Unicorn Girls and Horse Girls and I know they would love this story. The messaging about envy/jealousy and differences is easy to understand for younger readers. I am adding this to my classroom library wishlist. :)
Unicorn and horse is a unique and adorable story for children that shares a valuable life lesson. Filled with beautiful, eye catching artwork this is sure to be a favorite among children. Being different is okay. Not being the center of attention is okay. We all have our own gifts and talents. We are also more alike than we like to think. This story is about a jealous horse that longs to be as exciting as the unicorn. When thieves come and kidnap unicorn, horse is the only one that can save it.
The story follows Unicorn, who is a unicorn, and Horse, who is not. Horse does not like Unicorn because he is jealous of everything Unicorn can do. However, one night Unicorn is stolen and it is up to Horse to save him. The story is sweet and has great messages about differences, kindness, and friendship. The illustrations are also fun and colorful.
I LOVE Unicorn (and Horse), particularly Horse. This engaging picture book gives the reader the chance to explore feelings of jealousy and how that effects the characters. When Horse has a chance to save Unicorn, will the jealousy win or will Horse rise above to be a hero?
I have read this to several classes in my school library with sound effects on Novel Effect and they LOVED it, even a class that is ALL boys!
Get this book and read it to the kids in your life!
Thank you to Familius Books and Net Galley for the eARC!
Oh my goodness, this is so cute. I couldn’t resist when I saw the cover with that jolly unicorn and the really miffed looking horse… I laughed a lot. If you need cheering up, read this!
Some of us are unicorns and make rainbows and some of us are horses and, well, make something else… Some of us eat pink cupcakes and some of us munch on hay… A story teaching us about envy and what really counts and makes us happy.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own and I was not required to give a positive review.
I LOVED this book! The pacing was great and easy to read with a child. The colours were vibrant and caught the attention of my infant and she loved the illustrations! I also thought the message of the story was so great and easy for children to comprehend. Unicorn (and Horse) has everything I look for in a children's book! Fun, educational, life lessons, and colourful! Brilliant book. Highly recommend. I am definately purchasing this one for my home library!
This book was so cute and had such a great message that could really do well in a home or classroom. As a teacher a story with great illustrations and a message that relates to my babies is all I need and this book had it!
The message is very clear:
We will run into many people that can do things that we can’t, attracts more friends than we do, or even looks different than we do. If we look at all the things we think are better than us this can cause jealousy and a dislike for that person. In the end though it’s important we recognize our own strengths and show kindness even when it feels hard!
That is such a big thing for kids and even adults! We struggle with comparing ourselves to others, but I love how this book targets kids to help teach them at an early age we all have something we are good in and we don’t have to compare ourselves.
A very cute story, although maybe a little bit of a strange way to show the evolution of a friendship. I loved the illustrations, though and would still encourage parents to give it a shot
This was an adorable book about differences, envy, and friendship. I enjoyed reading this beautifully illustrated book with my toddlers and used it to talk with them about how we all have something special to contribute to the world, and that we shouldn’t compare ourselves to others.
The illustrations in this book are cute and eye-catching, but the story does not seem age appropriate. While the messaging about envy and friendship comes across relatively clearly, I think there are more creative and child-appropriate ways to convey it than a unicorn being kidnapped, tied up, and carted off by bandits.
This ebook was made available for me to read and review by David W. Miles, Familius, and NetGalley.
The illustrator of this picture book is Hollie Mengert. The pictures are exaggerated for humor and very brightly colored. Making the experience inviting for the reader.
This delightful picture book is beloved of my grandkids. I had to read this three times. Once for each individual grandkid, I guess. This is about envy and is an enemies to friends' tales of horsey heroics. Enjoy!
Thank you to David W. Miles, Familius, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ebook. All opinions and viewpoints expressed in this review are my own.
Overall I think this is a 2 for writing (there's hardly any and it doesn't add anything) and a 5 for the art (it's fun and vibrant and tells the story without the words).
So lovely to see one of my 8-year-old’s favorite Vooks in the Read Now section of NetGalley, but here we are!
This book is such a delight, illustration and prose-wise. Simple language, easy to follow storyline, and whimsical images are a sure fire way into a kids heart.
I’d recommend this fun tale of friendship for ages 4-9.
This was lovely. A beautiful story about envy, but also about setting aside our jealousies and becoming friends.
Then there's the art! It's fantastic. The artist has done an exceptional job of capturing facial expressions and body language in order to convey emotion. Top notch art.
An uplifting and joyous read.
The book starts out strong, where we can see why horse would be jealous or unicorn. I didn't like the event that turned them into friends was unicorn getting kidnapped. I think that this is a little bit too scary for young children. I wish there had been some other events to bring them closer. My 4 year old was not a fan.
A funny sweet read about jealous and differences. The book is easy to read and plot is simple and fun to follow. The illustrations really made this book for me, they were fun and frothy and I wanted to keep some as posters.
My friend suggested this to me and she was so right!
This was a really lovely story about differences and envy.
The illustrations were wonderfull, probably my favourite part of this book!
