This was a fantastic book in a VERY tough area that not enough of the current era is prepared for navigating. As a caregiver/guardian myself, I found this book to be both realistic and useful. Would definitely recommend.
Positive Caregiving by Sarah Teten Kanter is the great big pep talk I needed. It goes without saying that caregiving is hard. Kanter is here to support us in this role and to help us find and focus on the positive. She says, "Caring for a loved one can be one of the most rewarding roles you have in your lifetime."
By focusing on gratitude, empathy, forgiveness, love and awe, she gives us a mix of both encouragement and practical tools and ideas to help us. While I didn't find all her specific suggestions to be practical for my current situation and relationship, I still came away with a renewed commitment to bring joy and positive energy to my caregiving relationship and responsibility.
Thank you to NetGalley for the Advance Read.
Positive thoughts and recommendations to become a more loving, positive caregiver. Some parts of this book felt cheesy or unrealistic, but overall very insightful!
This book was straightforward and encouraging. I've read many books on caregiving, but nothing that has helped me feel as calm and hopeful as I do from Sarah Teten Kanter's words. I am hopeful about the conversations I can still have with my aging parents, and the shared activities we can do together. I can't wait to use the reflections and self-care practices. Kanter offers a fresh perspective on how caring for others and ourselves can enrich our lives. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
