Wow! I LOVED this book so much! I loved that there was a lot of action in this book and so many chapters ended on cliffhangers. This book kept me guessing and had me on the edge of my seat. I loved that the book started off in the middle of one of the murders and was so action packed that it pulled the reader right into the book. I really enjoyed this reading experience and want to read more books from this author.
"The Last Hunt" is a gripping thriller filled with new murders, cold cases and mysteries. This is the sequel to "The Final Hunt", which I highly recommend you to read first or you will be somewhat confused and spoil yourself for "The Final Hunt." Cameron's life in Seattle went bust when it was discovered that her late husband was a serial killer. So she moved to the remote town of Tok, Alaska to build a new life. When a girl is murdered in town, it stirres up old memories. The MO is strikingly similar to two murders from the 90s. When Cameron's boyfriend starts behaving oddly and becomes a suspect, her life is turned upside down once again...
I listened to the audio version of this book and really enjoyed it. The narrator did a fantastic job bringing Cameron's feelings to life and setting the tense atmosphere.
The story was suspenseful and quite dark. There were so many suspects and I kept on guessing who'd done it! I'm happy to say I guessed wrong and I really enjoyed the twist at the end.
I've read the first book I the series right before this one and didn't enjoy it all that much (partly, because I spoiled myself by starting this one and being too lost to read it as a standalone.) I really didn't like the FMC in the first book, but she grew on me in this one. I also liked the FBI agent much more. Her actions were much more plausible.
So, while not a perfect book, this was a good thriller. 4.25 stars
Thanks to Netgalley and Spotify audiobooks for the download of this audio book!
I will pretty much read anything that Audrey J. Cole puts out - and The Last Hunt was another example of why that is true!
This was an awesome book - twisty and mysterious - I just could not put it down.
In Tok, Alaska, Cameron Prescott (a widow twice over) has started over with her state trooper boyfriend. She is hoping that her serial killer ex-husband's secrets died with him. But, when a new murder harkens back to his modus operandi, she is scared that she is next.
Cameron was a really cool character, and I LOVED how she evolved as we learned more about her history and everything that she endured in her marriages. The ending was perfection.
I would listen to Leslie Howard read the dictionary, her voice is just that perfect. Different characters were clear, pitch and pace were excellent.
Thank you to NetGalley and Spotify Audiobooks for this ALC in exchange for an honest review.
I would first like to give thanks for the opportunity to have an advance copy of the audiobook.
It was an intriguing read. I didn't know that there was a book before this one. I don't know if it's a stand alone, but I personally feel I would have been reading the first book in the series rather than starting with the second. Because of that it was a little hard for me to relate to the characters and for a while I was confused as to what was going on, and who was who. I benefited from just starting over to get a grasp of what was going on and who was who. After that I enjoyed listening to the book and would recommend to anyone that enjoys crime thrillers.
This new to me author's latest murder mystery procedural sounded really interesting. I liked the Alaska setting and the serial killer ex aspect but I struggled to really get invested and ended up DNFing about 60% though :( Maybe just not the book for me or wrong time/mood. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an opportunity to read an early audio copy in exchange for my honest feedback.
Thank you Netgalley for the advance audiobook copy of The Last Hunt by Audrey J. Cole in exchange for an honest review. This was such a good mystery. I have to go back and read the first in the series as I enjoyed this one so much. I kept talking to the narrator and telling the characters to do this or that like a movie. I listened to the whole thing in one night.
When I downloaded this advanced listening copy, i did not realize that this was the second book in the Final Hunt series. I was still able to follow everything that was happening in the second book but I will definitely be going back to read The Final Hunt so I can find out exactly what happened in the first book, it sounds like it was exciting. Audrey J. Cole did a great job of making me think that I had it all figured out, spoiler, I did not. I loved the reveal, I had not guessed who the bad guy was, so that was a pleasant surprise. I hope there will be more books in this series because I would love to know what happens with these characters next.
Leslie Howard did a good job narrating this novel. Their tone was even and they were clear and easy to understand.
The Last Hunt is a mystery/thriller based on the other side of police investigations—the victim and witness of the crimes. This story has multiple POVs, with the primary POV being a woman trying to escape a serial killer. When she’s not taken seriously, she takes things into her own hands, which creates a compelling story.
I really liked the integration of POVs of additional victims, which gave an element of surprise and fear. I also liked the setting, Alaska, which is a great place for these events to take place.
I listened to the audiobook version of this story, which had a single narrator who did a great job. I listened at 2x speed (my normal audiobook listening speed is 1.75-2x speed).
Thank you NetGalley and Spotify Audiobooks for this advanced audiobook copy.
I didn’t realize this was the 2nd book in a series but it did not matter that much. The book picked up and gave enough details from the past to understand what was happening. I didn’t love this one unfortunately, it fell flat for me. I had it figured out pretty early on and I hate when that happens! I’m giving it 3 stars because there was enough going on to keep me turning the pages quickly but wasn’t surprised enough at the ending. Thank you NetGalley for the arc!
For this review I do come from a slight disadvantage as I did not realize this was a follow up to a previous book, The Final Hunt, where you learn the back story of Cameron who had been previously married to Miles (an abusive man) and then John Prescott a serial killer. (Wow she sure can pick em' can't she?) Cameron is some kind of Xena Warrior princess in that she was able to trap John and leave him in the woods to be eaten by wolves--grizzly. Thinking that she is free from him, this book opens with women being murdered in his style murder.
Cameron has settled into a new life with her Sheriff boyfriend Dane and built a community in Tok AK. As the new murders begin to happen the FBI starts to wonder....is John still alive?
This book was strongly character driven and police procedure. There was a great amount of action/hunt/chase. I was totally entertained the whole time no doubt. I wish I had read the first book in this series to better understand how Cameron became so strong. With this book it was hard to imagine that a dentist could also be involved in the killing of a serial killer.
The police/FBI certainly did disclose a lot of information to Cameron, but I guess it moved the plot forward?
Audrey Cole is a new author to me, and if this is any indication of her abilities as an author I am excited to read more of her books. This was a great read and I highly suggest! I will say try to get book # 1 first so you can fully understand the characters and relationships more, as this book is pure action!
Thank you Net Galley for allowing me to read this advanced copy of The Last Hunt. I was not influenced or paid in exchange for this honest review.
I didn’t realize when requesting this that it was the second in the series. Despite that, I understood what was going on and really enjoyed the stark landscape of Alaska and the thrilling plot with twists every way I looked.
Cameron is back- and maybe John, too?? First of all, I didn’t realize this was a part 2. I quickly was confused and paused to read the first book.
I’ll say I liked this book better than the first. Cameron is informed than John, her ex- husband teacher serial killer who she thought the wolves ate in book one, is possibly still alive. At the same time, a new teacher death occurs but not quite with the same style as John. Instead, the murder is similar to a few from decades ago that her new boyfriend’s (Dane) father was suspected of.
This was fast paced with plenty of twists and misdirection! Recommended for those who enjoy serial killer mysteries!
Thanks for NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was more intense than the first. I was anxious for Cameron and the town. So many clues and cold cases. I tried to finish it quick. A nice thrilling duology. Cameron is pretty hardcore. Also I felt cold from everything being covered in snow, with icy winds. Good with a hot chocolate. I think I prefer thrillers as audiobooks. Then my eyes can’t skip ahead accidentally.
Quick plot: There is a new serial killer in town. Is it Cameron’s late husband who is somehow still alive or is it a state trooper of Alaska?
The narrator was nice. Cool how she could do young and old voices that were distinct.
Thanks to NetGalley for the arc in return for this review.
I really enjoyed this thriller! It was fast paced and suspenseful! I loved all the surprises the author had in store. I loved how the author made me question who the killer was. Is it her serial killer husband she thought was dead? Is it her new boyfriend? I did catch on eventually but I still really enjoyed this!
I do wish the Audio version had been told from more than one voice to add to the book, but I still enjoyed it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Spotify Audiobooks for this advanced audiobook in exchanged for my honest opinion!
Sequel brings this thriller duo to a predictable and improbable conclusion.
Cameron Prescott Jenkins has moved to Tok, Alaska, following the death of her serial killer husband. At least she hopes he is truly and finally dead. She is trying to start over with her new state trooper boyfriend and put her past behind her. Unfortunately, when a new body is found that bears some similarities to the methods used by John Prescott in his murderous spree, Cameron is not certain that he is not back and ultimately seeking revenge.
Narrated by Leslie Howard, this audiobook moved at a face pace. The voice of the narrator did not change much and so most of the characters sounded way too much alike. The nuances and differences did little to help me in telling them apart. This is usually not a problem because I typically following along in the e-book while listening, but at times I had difficulty figuring out whom of the large cast of characters was speaking.
I had read the first book and this picked up right where the other left off, but I would not read this one without having read the first. I never cared for Cameron or found her likeable or believable as a woman in this remote area of Alaska posing as a super woman survivor type. I also couldn't understand why all these law enforcement types were so helpful to her and gave her all sorts of investigation information that usually would not be shared. I don't feel justice was served by the ending. If there is more to this story or about these characters, I won't be following along.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the audiobook ARC. I had been offered a copy of the e-book as well but apparently missed the download deadline.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Spotify Audiobooks for the free audiobook in exchange for my honest review. This is narrated by Leslie Howard who makes this a fantastic listening experience! I highly recommend the audio version.
Cameron is a dentist in the small town of Took, Alaska. She is a tough survivor who happened to be married to an abusive first husband, who she killed. Her second husband was a serial killer that she thought she left for dead along with her past. But when killings begin to happen in Took that mirror those of her ex-husband, she is worried that he is still alive somehow. Did her ex-husband survive? Is Dane, her new boyfriend and a state trooper, in danger or is he too a killer?
This is a fast paced, character driven book that was a nail biter for me! I loved the twists and turns that kept the suspense high. At one point, I suspected pretty much every character as the killer. While I found Cameron's back story a bit far fetched, it works in the story. I loved the strong female characters.
This is the sequel in the series and it can definitely be read as a stand-alone. However, I wish I had read the first book in the series first, but I plan to go back and read it now.
A fantastic read!!! 5 stars!!!
Cameron Prescott has a bad record of choosing the wrong men. One of those men happens to be a dead serial killer. But when new killings occur in their remote town of Tok, Alaska, questions arise concerning Cameron’s late husband and the new man in her life. Will the dead stay dead or will too many old secrets rise up, risking the lives of everyone?
This was such a spooky and chilling read. I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved how the author took me through a journey between hope and certain doom. I was kept on the edge of my seat, which left me wanting more each time I had to put down the book. I read through this book quite quickly. The only critique I have for the book is the last few chapters. The ending was happy and conclusive, but I was just slightly disappointed in the chapters that wrapped up the drama and thrill of the book regarding the killings. Having said that, I still think this is a 5 star read.
I received an audiobook ARC from Spotify Audiobooks and Audrey J. Cole. All thoughts and opinions here are mine and mine alone.
The audiobook version of this book only made it more enjoyable. The narrator did an excellent job of bringing angst to the story and personifying the characters in a way that enhances the story. I highly recommend the audiobook version of this book. It is perfect for this summer. You will not regret picking up and listening to The Last Hunt!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I didn’t realize at first this was the second in a series. But it was still easy to follow. Now I will need to look for the first book in the series. Great thriller and good narrator.

Cameron is trying to start over after all that happened in The Final Hunt, but is finding it hard to do so when new murders are happening that show similarities to how her ex husband did his killings.
Oh boy, the action never stops and the pace is super fast, which is what I’ve come to expect from this author. I loved that there were two different police forces working. Having some chapters from the victims really helped to keep me engaged. I, also, loved who the killer turned out to be because I didn’t really see it coming since there were a couple different options. I highly recommend this series.
Series notes:
I would definitely read The Final Hunt first. This is somewhat a continuation of things that transpired in that book, but there are new standalone parts in this one.
Narration notes:
I thought she did great. She showed proper emotion when necessary. Since we do have some male POV’s a male narrator would have been nice.
So I listened to this not knowing there was a book one. Although I didn't read the first book, I was still able to follow along. There was a lot going on, in a good way. Very suspenseful. I just kept waiting for fmcs late husband to pop up out of nowhere.
I would have liked if there was a male narrator for the detective. I found myself confused on who's POV it was.
