This may be late but wow did I need this! This was beautiful and intimate. I could relate so much. As a first born Latinx this spoke to me on a level I wasn’t expecting. I will definitely be gifting this to Latinx folx in my life.
This book was something that I really needed. I found it very inspiring and eye opening. This book talks about so many important topics that many Latinos, especially women/girls, face all the time. The layout is very cohesive as it has a specific topic, then the author tells us about her own experience, and then it has affirmations/reflections. I feel very heard from this book and it feels very healing for me.
It is a a beautiful and well thought out book that many Latinas can use as a resource to heal. I definitely recommend for everyone to read this book.
Thank you to Kim Guerra, the publisher, and NetGalley for this e-ARC.
Badass Bonita is an entertaining, action-packed read that keeps you hooked with its fast-paced plot and bold protagonist. Bonita is a fierce and relatable character, navigating her way through challenges with determination and attitude. The author does a great job of blending humor, drama, and action, making for a fun ride.
That said, the book does have a few moments where the pacing feels rushed, and certain plot points could have used more depth. Some of the supporting characters didn’t feel fully developed, which made parts of the story feel a bit one-dimensional. However, if you’re looking for a light, empowering read with a strong female lead, Badass Bonita delivers just that. It’s an enjoyable book, though not without its flaws.
This book is a compelling read despite not being a personal favorite. It is brimming with inspiring and thought-provoking messages that encourage readers to see things in a new light and value them more.
I would like to express my gratitude to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for providing me with an advance reader copy (ARC) of this book. In return, I offer my honest review of the content and themes presented within its pages.
Overall, this book offers a collection of beautiful and empowering messages that have the potential to resonate with readers on a deep level. It challenges perspectives and fosters a greater appreciation for the intricacies of life.
Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC. 3.5 stars rounded down. I loved the bilingual writing style though there were many grammar errors (in both languages) which I'm hoping will be fixed by publication. This book has a powerful message but it can sometimes feel a little corny. The affirmations at the end of each chapter were a little much for me.
This book is filled with beautiful empowering messages that will make you rethink things and appreciate things more.
Thank you to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
In "Badass Bonita," Kim Guerra shares her life in a way that intertwines her personal journey with a compelling guide for self-discovery and becoming a "badass". The book stands as a motivational love letter for Latine women, urging us to break free from the stifling confines of machismo that have long silenced our voices. Guerra's lyrical writing, infused with her unique poetic Spanglish style, breathes air into the nature of finding one's voice and identity. Her honest recounting of her experiences—from surviving childhood sexual abuse and navigating life as the eldest daughter in a Latin Pentecostal family, to her therapeutic journey and professional accomplishments—resonates deeply, providing both inspiration and practical guidance to those on a similar healing path. By sharing her own metamorphosis into a poet, writer, and therapist, Guerra illustrates the power of self-love and the critical importance of rejecting silence in favor of bold, revolutionary self-expression.
"Badass Bonita" is more than a self-help guide, its an empowering manifesto for revolutionary love and self-possession. Guerra expertly addresses complex issues such as machismo, mental health, trauma, and intersectional identities, providing readers with tools to understand and heal their emotional wounds. Through her journey of rejecting the calladita te ves más bonita mindset, Guerra teaches Latine women to embrace our inner guerrera and create positive changes within our relationships and communities. This book is a must-read for mothers, daughters, therapists, and all mujeres poderosas ready to heal and reclaim joy and self-confidence. Thank you to the author and publisher for the e-arc copy!
