Pills and Jacksonvilles was my first experience reading Jillian Weise's work. I am grateful to have read Alice Wong's collections of essays, Disability Visibility and Disability Intimacy, immediately prior to reading this book, as it provided some vocabulary used in disability culture (and in this collection of poems). Even with this context, I still felt woefully undereducated on the subject matter of Cy's poems, and I found myself frequently Googling names and terms. This is not a criticism, simply an acknowledgment of my own ignorance as a non-disabled reader. I also appreciated the experimental nature of Cy's work (e.g. the short-form video poems that are accessible by QR code).
Thank you so much to NetGalley for my advanced reader copy.
