I thought that this book did a fantastic job of wrapping up an incredibly entertaining series. I have spent the past 5 months working my way through this series and I was eager to see how things would work out. This story had all of the action, excitement, romance, and god/goddess appearances that I hoped to see. I was very satisfied with the way that things worked out.
This book picks up shortly after the events of the previous installment. This is the sixth and final book in the Mythos Academy series which I would recommend reading in order. Gwen is just trying to live a normal life but with Loki on the loose, I knew that things wouldn’t stay calm for long. Loki and the Reapers want an artifact so they are all being moved to Gwen’s school so she can use her magic to figure out which one they are after. When they can’t get the artifact, someone Gwen loves is placed in danger and Gwen will do anything to keep them safe.
This book kept me guessing. I couldn’t wait to see how Gwen would finally take care of Loki and I loved that there were a few surprises along the way. Gwen has grown a lot over the course of this series and I was impressed by how many now look to her as a leader. Her group of friends was amazing in this book and made sure to support her when she needed it most.
Tara Sands has been the voice of this series and has book an amazing job of bringing these characters to life. I love the fact that the character voices have been very consistent throughout the series. I think that she is able to add a lot of excitement and emotion to her reading. I listened to this book for hours at a time and do believe that her narration added to my enjoyment of the story.
I would not hesitate to recommend this book to others. I thought that this was an incredibly well-done series that had me reaching for my headphones time and again. I definitely plan to read more of this talented author’s work soon.
I received a digital review copy of this book from Kensington Books and purchased a copy of the audiobook.
It was with great excitement and a bit of trepidation that I started with Killer Frost. I have loved this series so much all these years and now this is the final book, so it is obvious I would be a bit sad. I’ve seen Gwen grow from a simple girl with psychometric powers into a fierce warrior deserving of the title of Nike’s Champion. Granted, the books had a lot of repetition in the form of the Reapers attacking all the time (which was even made fun of in this book – very meta), the lack of real security in Mythos Academy and the Harry Potter allusions but it was an amazing journey so far.
The best part of the series is that it unites almost every mythology that we know about and spins it into one tale. The pantheon of Gods, the legendary warriors and their descendants, the good old fight between light and dark – it was all so neatly woven into an adventure. The Second Chaos War looms with Loki getting more powerful than ever and it is now upto Gwen to find a way to defeat them. The plot is very fast-paced and action-centric, which considering it deals with warriors, is natural, of course. The writing flows smoothly along with the pace – the dialogues, however, not so much. I did find most of the battle-dialogue between Vivian and Gwen quite cliche at most times – they taunt each other nearly the same lines in every book. Even Vic and Lucretia get tiresome at times.
Keeping that aside, the story development in this book showed great improvement – the role of Guardians, the secret to killing Loki, the dynamics between Logan and Gwen (the romance was cut short, though) and finally the Second Chaos War. The ending was very satisfactory and wrapped things up well enough. A great ending to a wonderful series.
