David List’s debut novel, “What Are The Odds,” is a fast-paced and addictive crime thriller that plunges readers into the chaotic life of Ray Dawson, a former NYPD detective. Forced into early retirement under dubious circumstances, Ray finds himself entangled in a high-stakes game that tests his wits and resilience.

The story begins with Ray Dawson, who, after being unfairly pushed out of the NYPD, is trying to rebuild his life with his second wife, Stephanie. However, his quiet plans are not to be.

Ray Dawson is a compelling protagonist whose blend of toughness and vulnerability makes him relatable and engaging. Almost really good. I like List’s writing and characterization and story telling. What i didn’t like was the repeated time shifts which made the book hard to follow at some points and derailed the tension. But he has potential and with a more linear style and less video game violence , he could be a real comer in the crime / thriller field. The book for its faults is smart and funny and has a heart. Recommended.
