This was fast paced read with a lot happening.
having the multiple POV made it interesting and I wanted to know what was going to happen next!
This book made me have a rollercoaster of emotions! There were some characters I enjoyed and some I could not stand!

I suggest checking trigger warnings.
I will say at times it was difficult to follow along with the time jumps and multiple POV and some parts felt a bit too dragged out but overall I enjoyed it.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Harper has had a rough childhood and seeks help by professional. Unfortunately the doctor she chooses is not to be trusted. There is a lot going on in this book and a lot of characters. The is also a lot of real estate and homes. The whole story fell flat for me. I never connected to any of characters. The book was also way too long. The story kept dragging on. The ending was predictable.

This is a challenging read which delves into the misunderstood Dual Identity Disorder (DID). Isabella de Bruno has real courage in writing this, shining a light on something very personal to her.

There are times where it is a bit jarring but it does give an insight into the dangers of this not being diagnosed. It's never easy to read about mental health issues, especially when they are this raw.

Please do check trigger warnings before reading this.

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this arc!

I couldn't put this book down. It is an emotional roller coaster that covers many sensitive topics but the author handled them flawlessly. There are many triggers in the book and the narrative does go into some dark subjects. It will open your eyes to the reality of the illness that is the plot. This book is heavy, and it will go over your head if you're not paying attention, so please judge for yourself and do NOT be influenced by other reviews. I promise, if you can handle the triggers, you'll love it and will fall in love with Harper, the FMC. De Bruno's expertise as a storyteller is different but enjoyable and I would give this book more stars if possible.

Not sure where to start with this one. There was a lot going on! The multiple povs and the years long, jumping ahead timeline got a little confusing at times, and the whole thing read like a soap opera. But I was intrigued and invested enough to stick with it to see what would happen to everyone! This book got more and more wild, right till the end, but I did think the DID mental health part of it was handled well.

A System of Deception by Isabella De Bruno is about a young girl Harper, struggling with un diagnosed mental health issues. After many years of unsuccessful, mandatory therapy, she finally meets a psychologist who listens to her and wants to help, or so it seems. Harpers relationship with the doctor quickly becomes inappropriate and bizarre.

This reads like an overly descriptive yet extremely flat informational pamphlet. I felt no connection to any of the characters and the plot felt silly, strange and criminally underdeveloped. None of this writing felt believable. Unfortunately this book did not work for me.

Thanks NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I read up to nine chapters before seeing that this book is personally not for me. I stopped feeling connection to the characters after a few chapters, maybe because I don't understand what it's like to have Harper's disorder as she changes from one person to another. Raven, as one of the personalities (?) Was admirable for her self confidence but apart from that I really hated her, not only she took advantage of Harper and her body but she's also someone I would stay away from.

Also, having sex with her mother's husband was just messed up.

If you are looking for your next thriller, this should be it! Isabella de Bruno’s newest novel quickly pulled me in at the beginning and had me guessing until the end. There were so many sub plots and twists that I just couldn’t put it down! This book is full of dramatic turns in relationships, spicy scenes, romance with lots of will they won’t they, dangerous and reckless behavior, love triangles, and found family. Although this is multiple POV, the FMC had dissociative identity disorder (multiple personalities) which creates so many layers to the story. This one would definitely bring anyone out of a reading slump!

De Bruno’s crisp writing immediately hooked me, reminiscent of the movies “Sybil” and “The Seven Faces of Eve.” The seamless use of multiple POVs added depth, making the story truly engaging.

The main character, Harper Lane, struggles with her mother’s abandonment and assault experiences, though she can’t remember them. At sixteen, she’s forced into therapy for an undiagnosed mental illness. Her first psychologist, Doctor Jett Shaw, dismisses her as seeking attention.

After seven years, Doctor Shaw retires, and Harper meets his son, Dr. Brody Shaw, a respected psychologist who validates her symptoms. Harper develops feelings for Brody, who reciprocates but hides her diagnosis for his own purposes. Brody becomes infatuated with Raven, one of Harper’s alter personalities, who manipulates him for her own game, leaving Harper unaware and confused by memory gaps and time loss.

Brody’s plans are disrupted when Harper meets private investigator Alo Billengana. As Alo and Harper grow closer, he becomes suspicious of Brody and investigates, uncovering secrets about Harper’s childhood and illness. With the help of Harper’s friend, Nella, and the emergence of another alter-personality, Amethyst, Alo races against time to save Harper from Brody.

De Bruno’s narrative, rich with multiple POVs, enhances the story, allowing readers to understand each character’s motivations and growth. The exploration of mental illness is central, portrayed with sensitivity and insight, challenging preconceptions and fostering empathy.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author, Isabella De Bruno, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Title- A system of deception
Rating-⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My first experience with Isabella's writing did not disappoint. The book's focus on mental illness was thoroughly explored and presented in a unique and captivating way. The use of multiple perspectives was executed seamlessly, making it easy for me to follow and deeply invest in the story.

Harper Lane’s troubled childhood, haunted by abandonment and assault, leaves her with an undiagnosed mental illness. Forced into therapy at age sixteen, Harper feels emotionally invalidated when her psychologist, Doctor Jett Shaw, dismisses her complaints of dissociative fugue and abuse as an attempt to seek attention.

After seven agonizing years of therapy, the contemptuous doctor retires, and Harper’s life takes an unexpected turn when she crosses paths with his son. Doctor Brody Shaw is a renowned research psychologist who recognizes the definitive symptoms of Harper’s mental illness and offers his help. As they work together, Harper develops a crush on the slightly older doctor and Brody becomes increasingly infatuated with her. When Brody finally confirms Harper’s diagnosis, he realizes it is more beneficial for him if the details of her illness remain undisclosed.

Everything seems to go according to Brody’s plan until Harper meets the charming private investigator, Alo Billengana. As Alo and Harper grow closer, he becomes suspicious of Harper’s unusual relationship with Brody and her bizarre behavior. Unsure of what to do, Alo taps into his investigation skills to look into Brody's past and, he simultaneously uncovers the mysteries surrounding Harper’s childhood and her illness. Only after Alo solves the puzzle does he realize the importance of saving Harper from the manipulative and dangerous doctor.
