This book is the embodiment of cuteness.
The beginning is in the real world, during Christmas (don't worry, it's not a Christmas book), which is the coziest time of the year after all. Here we get a glimpse of the relationship between the main character and her mom. But soon, our girl Talia will be transported to another world, were she will have to face many things that make her uncomfortable, but she will learn many unexpected things, with a hint of romance.
My favorite part was when she said that she wants to learn how to fight with a sword and while many were against, a certain someone supported her and offered to teach. He's a sweetie.
This book was something I really needed and I don't find often enough, a book that keeps me hooked, while giving me a warm feeling.
Not even that long ago I promised myself to request fewer review copies. However, when I saw this cover and read this blurb I got a little too curious for my own well being. I therefore requested a copy and I was very happy when my request was granted. I have to admit that a Kindle copy not being available made it a little harder for me to read, but eventually I got the copy on my Kobo reader and could start reading.
I have to admit that the story wasn't as amazing as I had expected it to be. I think the main issue is that the romance is more a side plot than the main plot. Our heroine is mostly focussed on getting him and getting more familiar with the strange world she ended up in. Our hero has an important task and is mostly focussed on completing it. But, the book is most of all focussed on the world and showing all its fantastical wonders.
And I understand this world has a lot to offer, although the world building is the weakest part of the story. We meet a lot of creatures, we visit quite a few places and there are some fights and confrontations along the way, but somehow it doesn't feel like a whole. The foundation of the world feels a little wobbly. Maybe it's mostly because our heroine is overwhelmed and doesn't understand what's going on. Maybe it's just because the author focussed on scenes instead of the whole.
I also had some issues really connecting with the characters. Once more, since the focus is mostly on what is happening and what is going on, it feels there's less room for the characters to get some emotional depth. I don't really feel like I really know these characters and that means that it's also a little hard to truly care about them. I think it's also because of that that the romance didn't really work for me.
However, despite the fact that the book and I weren't a good match, if you love quests and adventures, I'm certain you'll love this book.
I. LOVED. THIS. The characterization, plot, detail, everything. Talia and Jarrett were actually the most adorable ever ("You taught me how to feel again." I died) and I loved that the book didn't just focus on their romance but also Talia's growth during their journey and her developing friendships with the rest of their crew.
I enjoyed the plot even if it may be a popular trope and it was very well planned out. The only "complaint" I have is that it did seem like a somewhat rushed ending compared to the meandering points of the first 75% of the book. It felt a little boring until I reached 60% and then it really picked up.
All in all I am super excited for book two and highly recommend this series!!
I have mixed feelings for the book and I can’t tell how much of that is because I was in a reading slump and that affected me reading this book.
The book has all the elements I love but it fell a little flat for me, I wanted a bit more of something that I couldn’t put my finger on. I really enjoyed the characters, love the animal side kicks and the cast of characters. I did want to know a bit more about the different world and the characters, I felt the book could have added a bit of depth, also what is happening with her mum and her world?
I know the book is a sequel but I feel like we needed a little bit more in this book. Overall I enjoyed the book, but it didn’t give me everything I wanted it to be. But as I said, that might be because I was in such a reading slump anyway. I think this might get a good re-read for me when in a different headspace.
Charting Stars is a fabulous adventure. We get to follow Talia is a happy where she is in life and not looking for an adventure but adventure found her. Her own painting seems to have sucked her into a new world where she is part of a unknown prophecy and is on a quest to try and get back home. She meet Jerrett a runner who turns into a budding slow romance, a Crown Prince who doesn't want to be tied to the crown, a warrior that has her own secrets, a trader and now a tree creature. Oh and a witch/cat and an adorable squirrel. All the making of a great fantasy adventure that I think many people will enjoy, just like I did. I'm ready for book two whenever you are Ryckman, bring it on!
Ireen Chau illustrated yet another fantasy cover, yes please! I not only love this cover but I loved the content inside as well. In a week where my anxiety felt super heavy, this book held the perfect escape for me without feeling like too much. I will be definitely picking up more by Micheline Ryckman. If you love a cozy, romantic, adventure pick this one up!
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
The cover of this book and the beginning were adorable, but the writing style isn’t what I like. I tend to prefer more details where I feel like we’re skipping over some things here. DNF at 20%.
Loved this book, extremely enjoyable. The whole fantasy side of this book was fenomenal and I loved it a lot. The character we’re fun and interesting. I can wait to get more from this world
**Thank you to NetGalley and Publisher for the ARC of Charting Stars in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.**

Firstly, this novel was such a cute, short, fantasy romance! The cover is adorable and the main characters, Talia and Jarrett, are so good together. This had many moments that were endearing and amusing, and I can't wait to read the next one!

Since book is already out I’m giving 5 stars. I have downloaded on KU and will read there and give an Amazon review when I’m done!
Lovely cozy fantasy read. I found the characters to be endearing and it was an easy read. Would recommend!!
'Charting Stars' is a wholesome read! I was drawn in by the absolutely adoring cover, and the story did not disappoint! Though it's relatively short, the book is packed with action, witty banter, and friendship. And let's not forget the cats! One cat in particular may or may not be a witch???
The main character is incredibly relatable. She prefers the comfort of her home, surrounded by her art and her cats (same). Her sudden plunge into an unexpected adventure forces her to summon courage and venture into the great outdoors. Despite the challenges, the outdoors does have its perks, including a handsome man with dimples...
This was a delicious little snack of a book, perfect for anyone who loves fantasy, wants something easy and fast to read and who loves magical adventures.
I got this as an arc on Netgalley and it has since come out! I loved it! It took me a bit to get into it but when I got into it I couldn't stop. Well written, interesting characters, lovely witch cat with a proper attitude.
When artist Talia is thrown into an alternate world through one of her paintings, she must start the journey to find a way back home. Along the way she meets and befriends a charming and handsome companion, a sentient squirrel, powerful witches and warriors, and more.
This book was a wonderful cozy fantasy! I would describe it as almost a slice of life book, as we follow the characters on a journey through the forest. There was just a touch of romance as well. The plot definitely picks up at the end and we get a good amount of action for a cozy fantasy. Most of the plot lines were not wrapped up at the end, so this is definitely the first in a series and not a standalone. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next one!
This book was amazing! The main characters were so cute together and the story was very well written. If you are looking for a cozy fantasy this book is for you!
A beautiful novel, filled with lovely pros. So magical and lovely! I really enjoyed the world that Michelins Ryckman created.
Micheline Ryckman's vivid storytelling and intricate world-building captivated me from the very first page, creating an immersive experience that resonated with me long after the final chapter. That ending made me want to pick up the next book right away! It is a perfect read for anyone who craves a mix of fantasy, friendship, and a dash of courage. It's the perfect book for a cozy autumn day, for sure!
‘Charting Stars’ by Micheline Ryckman is a whimsical and cozy fantasy with delightful characters and charming humor, perfect for a lighthearted escape.
The story follows Talia, a Canadian girl who finds herself transported to the magical Nine Realms. Accompanied by the charming Jarrett, Talia embarks on a series of lighthearted yet thrilling encounters with various enemies. The narrative is lighthearted but well-structured, providing a perfect blend of whimsy and excitement. The enemies they face add just the right amount of tension to keep readers engaged without overshadowing the story’s cozy nature.
Talia and Jarrett are absolutely adorable. Their chemistry and interactions are heartwarming, making them instantly lovable. The misunderstandings between Talia, with her earthly Canadian references, and the inhabitants of the Nine Realms add a layer of humor and charm to the story. I also really loved the addition of Bash and Moses; together with Talia, Jarrett, and Maren, they formed the perfect little group with each their own personalities that somehow challenged but also complemented each other. However, more background information on characters like Maren and Jora would have enriched the narrative. Hopefully, future installments will delve deeper into their stories.
The concept of allocated animals is fascinating, though I would have loved to hear QB speak. The Nine Realms are vividly described, immersing readers in a world that feels both magical and cozy. The Star Trek references are a delightful bonus for fans, adding an extra layer of enjoyment.
Micheline Ryckman’s writing is engaging and fast-paced. The story flows effortlessly, making it easy to devour in a single sitting. Ryckman herself describes ‘Charting Stars‘ as a comedic, cozy (but spirited) fantasy, and it truly lives up to this description. It’s a book designed to make readers feel good, and it certainly succeeds.
Would I recommend it?
‘Charting Stars‘ is a whimsical and heartwarming start to The Nine Realms Tales series. It’s a fast-paced, well-written fantasy that will leave readers eagerly awaiting the next installment. As a Trekkie, the Star Trek references were a delightful surprise, adding to the overall enjoyment. I can’t wait to see where Talia and Jarrett’s adventures take them next!

This book has a cozy fantasy vibe that reminded me a bit of Narnia. However, it didn't really resonate with me. The writing style seems to target a much younger audience, which is a bit odd since there are some mature themes in the story. Personally, I didn't feel invested in the story or the characters. While it might appeal to others, I don't think I'll continue with this series.

I got almost instantly in this book.
I'm so glad you wrote this book, but at the same time I'm sad for the reason why it was written and not drawn. Normally, cozy books aren't for me (I normally prefer gory horror books), but the cover drew me in so much that I couldn't stop thinking about it, and it actually turned out to be in my top five of books I've read this year.
