A young screenwriter, author of a popular sci-fi series and a few horror movies, is told by his studio to kill off his leading gay characters. When he refuses to do so he sets in motion some bizarre situations that have him doubting his sanity and trying to protect his friends and his own life. I loved this book so much; it’s totally original, filled with horror and suspense and humor. The audiobook has several excellent narrators who made the whole experience even better

I’m ashamed to admit that sometimes this book was a little over my head, science and science fiction wise. I wasn’t always sure what was real or what was fake, or even what might be a mix of both. I did like the overall theme and the pushing back on the trope that only stories of gay tragedy are worth hearing. I also liked the glimpse into what a world would be like if there were no conflict or tragedy at all in gay stories as well… a story needs to have a hook, you know? I feel like this book got its main points across in an interesting way.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!

Fans of Chuck Tingle and newcomers who like smart, scary, funny, queer horror are in for a treat. Misha is a successful, semi-closeted screenwriter. When some of his sinister creations start showing up IRL he is forced to face down his demons, both literal and metaphoric.

Chuck Tingle is so clever and funny!!! The way he can write a book that is heartfelt and scary and thoughtful and funny all at the same time is truly a marvel. I had a blast reading this even though it got a little convoluted for me toward the end. I cannot wait to see what's next from this author.

Wasn't really sure what to expect heading into reading Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle, but what I got was a tremendously written tale of psychological terror, body horror, corporate greed, and queer erasure.
Misha knows that chasing success in Hollywood can be hell. But finally, after years of trying to make it, his big moment is here: an Oscar nomination. And the executives at the studio for his long-running streaming series know just the thing to kick his career to the next level: kill off the gay characters, "for the algorithm," in the upcoming season finale.
Misha refuses, but he soon realizes that he’s just put a target on his back. And what’s worse, monsters from his horror movie days are stalking him and his friends through the hills above Los Angeles. Haunted by his past, Misha must risk his entire future—before the horrors from the silver screen find a way to bury him for good.
Chuck Tingle's Bury Your Gays is truly a masterclass of blending horror with social commentary. Tingle tackles so big social issues while also creating an extremely well written psychological horror novel, not an easy feet by any stretch. They kept us on the edge of our seats while also bringing attention to corporate greed, queer erasure and even the ethics of using AI in Hollywood.
Known mostly for their niche gay erotica, Tingle has now written two mainstream novels at Tor Nightfire, both outstanding. Writing a mainstream horror novel with issues such as queer erasure is something only a few have the ability to accomplish well and one of those people is Chuck Tingle. They weave the social commentary themes into the narrative seamlessly, shedding light on the injustices faced by marginalized communities in the entertainment industry. This book serves as power commentary on the importance of representation and standing up against discriminatory practices while also just being an outstanding horror novel.
The twists and turns of Bury Your Gays had me guessing to what was eventually going to happen. I was constantly surprised as the novel progressed. The pacing is spot-on, keeping me engaged. I was completely engrossed taking no time to finish. Once I picked it up, I just couldn't put it down. Tingle's writing style is engaging and evocative, drawing you into Misha's world with vivid descriptions and compelling character development. It's truly a testament to their skill as a storyteller that they can tackle such heavy subject matter while still delivering an entertaining read.
Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle is an outstanding read with a great blend of horror and social commentary. The terror, gore, societal critique and even moments of science-fiction offers a great reading experience that is unlike anything else at the moment. I was lucky enough to listen to the audiobook of Bury Your Gays. It was extremely well narrated by André Santana, but had fun cameos from some great names such as Charlie Jane Anders, CJ Leede, Georgia Bird, Liz Kerin, Mara Wilson, Mark Oshiro, Sarah Gailey, Stephen Graham Jones, T. Kingfisher and TJ Klune. It was fun overall listen experience, on top of being a extremely well written novel.

I feel that huge roster of narrators was a teensy bit misleading, but I’m going to let it slide because this was fantastic. I love meta horror and this was about as meta as it gets, dropping the reader smack in the middle of Hollywood in the horror movie scene. I was fully immersed right from the beginning. I loved the main character and his development throughout the story, the supporting cast was superb, and the chills were CHILLING. Like there were some legit scary moments.
Bury Your Gays explores corporate greed, AI, societal agendas, and LGBTQIA+ in media. It was well done and incredibly unique. I dare say I liked this even more than Camp Damascus (loved the mention of it in this one) and I just had a fun time with it. Highly recommend to meta horror fans or those looking for LGBTQIA+ novels in this genre. Tingle doesn’t let ya down.

Chuck Tingle's "Bury Your Gays" is a fun and thought-provoking read, blending humor and heartfelt messages. Tingle flips the script on the usual trope with clever satire and engaging characters. The story is entertaining, full of unexpected twists, and leaves a strong message of love and acceptance. It's a refreshing and unique take that showcases Tingle's distinct style perfectly.

Chuck has done it again! Possibly even better? The premise of this plot is completely off the walls and yet ties together so well. Misha is a well known scriptwriter amongst the lgbtq+ horror movie community and has been nominated for an Oscar. Until one day, he decides to defy the homophobic views of his managers when they tell him to kill off his gay characters. The darkness of his past begins to unfold and he must face his inner conflicts before time runs out.
I could not stop listening! Including that the audiobook cast was FILLED with some of my favorite horror authors. This story was a fast-paced sci-fi horror packed full of monsters. It had the best creepy summer horror vibes that I have been needing, Please, I need more.
Thank you NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review!

I did not expect this to be so riveting, creepy and clever. Nobody got pounded in the butt once, either.
This was an immersive horror, cleverly juxtaposing elements of terror and gore with many societal injustices, holding up a mirror to issues like lgbtqia erasure, corporate greed and AI ethics. In a similar vein to the show ‘The Boys’ Tingle takes the reader on a journey to the extremes of these hot topics, pulling our emotions while terrorizing us with the ‘what if’s’. This was very well done, and the character development was on point. The supporting characters were well represented and the final culmination so satisfying and funny.
Doesn’t get full five stars because the middle could have been tighter and I needed better resolution on some of the MCs past trauma. But that’s a personal preference as I love a nice tightly tied up ending.
Notes on the audiobook: this was very well narrated but 90% of it was single narrator so the huge cast of voice actors credited is a bit misleading. There are two short scenes featuring cinematic narration with multiple actors and sound effects but the remainder of the book did not include that. I think my expectations were set too high, but André Santana did a great job.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing a complimentary copy of this audiobook.

Misha is used to some bizarreness, he does work in Hollywood, but when he is tracked down by what he believes is a fan cosplaying one of the antagonists of a horror movie he wrote, he needs to figure out what is going on before the end of the five day deadline the character gives him and his friend Tara. But all bets are thrown out the window when more characters from his past projects seem to appear in his life.
I didn’t expect a Chuck Tingle book to actually make me tear up, but this one did. I had a feeling this book would be for me, as someone who really enjoys books that deal with the movie industry in horror books. This book gives us this, gives us a cast of queer characters who aren’t perfect, but are so vibrant it’s hard to forget them after the fact. I enjoyed every second of this book.
This book also gives us great commentary on issues such as AI infiltrating creative industries and taking the place of humans, of holograms and the ethics of using someone’s image after they have passed or without their permissions, being queer in a small town and going away and finally being out and living two different lives, and finally, rainbow capitalism and the fact that companies will milk a starve marginalized group for all their money but refuse to listen to them or do right by them. And I think it was all down well while being added to a story without taking away from the characters or plot.
I would also recommend the audiobook for this. It is technically a cast recording, but we mostly have one narrator with exceptions for scenes that don’t involve our main character Misha, giving the reacher a feeling of ‘this isn’t right’ as soon as we start getting other voices and the writing style changes. It’s barring in a really creative way that comes across as different enough to get your attention.

I love a horror book with something important to say and I love even more when it is written in a way that’s still fun to experience. This book is proof that stories with a message DO NOT need to be emotionally draining and super serious to be impactful! Don’t get me wrong, there was definitely a sad scene or two and the core messages are serious & important, but I had an absolute blast reading this!
In this book we are following a filmmaker whose life is quickly turned upside down after refusing his studio execs request to kill off his lead gay characters. Great kills, gore, and creepy horror all throughout!! The pacing was perfect. Continuous jaw dropping, horrifying moments from start to finish. There is also a lot of relevant & much needed discussions around queer storytelling, art for arts sake vs. art for money, AI, algorithms, technology, and Hollywood. I was so surprised with where this story went and I loved EVERY SINGLE SECOND. One of my favorite books I’ve read this year!

Thanks so much to Macmillan audio, Netgalley, and the author for the advance listening copy 🖤

Bury Your Gays is my second read from Chuck Tingle. I have yet to dive into the tinglers. I really loved this book. I thought it was great. Misha was a cool protagonist and I thought the plot line was really interesting, it was wild and super gross. Definitely would recommend!

While you can puzzle out what's going on fairly early on with the breadcrumbs left for you, it in no way deters the effectiveness of the story Tingle is telling.
I'm not sure how to even categorize this story. It's part coming of age, coming into your own. Part social commentary, touching on LGBTQ issues far and wide. Part warning on the dangers of technology. Everything is wrapped in a traumatic horror-thriller and it's a delight to read.

"And in that way horror is a celebration of life, not death."
What a great read. I enjoyed every moment and found reasons to turn on this audiobook. Don't let the quote scare you away, this is not a horror. This is a suspense thriller about a director who's films are horror and his battle with Hollywood's use of queer characters in media. It's fun, self aware, and poignant.

Thank you to NetGalley and Tor Nightfire for the ALC of Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle.
This book follows Misha, a Hollywood screen writer who is obviously exhausted by the lack of positive queer representation in entertainment media. When he is asked to kill off his queer characters “for the algorithm,” he must decide what means more to him. Authenticity or the status quo. Not to mention he must now face his own creations from his past work and things turn weird, bloody, and horrific very quickly.
The focus is always on ”the algorithm” and keeping up with the present “trends.” Bury Your Gays also focuses on how capitalism and Hollywood profit off of trauma — specifically queer trauma.
One thing I love about Chuck Tingle’s writing is that there are subtle nuances throughout that the reader may or may not catch. The social commentary regarding queer representation, profiting off of queer trauma, and the ever present battle regarding the use of AI were probably some of my favorite parts of this book — and the most terrifying because these are all currently relevant issues that we are dealing with today.
I also liked that we got a glimpse into Misha’s past to better understand how he became a screen writer and what drove him to create the characters he did. These flashbacks also allowed us to understand why Misha wasn’t open with his family about being gay because of his fear of being “out” in a small town.
As for the audio portion of this book, the multiple narrators gave a depth to the book that I may not have gotten reading the actual book (although I will still read the physical book because there are just so many quotes worth highlighting imo). While there was on main narrator, the other cast of narrators gave depth to some of the screen play areas that we may not have gotten otherwise.
All in all, this is another Chuck Tingle book that I enjoyed and is definitely a relevant piece of literature!

I really enjoyed the pace of this book. It was well written, open, honest, and funny. I appreciated the story with the story and the narrators on the audio version.

If you are even horror-curious, get yourself this book and settle in for an incredible ride. Bury Your Gays is Chuck Tingle's second horror novel, after Camp Damascus (which was also fantastic and I also highly recommend). It centers on Misha Burns, a closeted screenwriter, who has just been nominated for an Oscar for his live action short. Despite his success, he finds himself fighting with the studio executives over their desire to have him kill off two gay characters in his TV show. Things...go haywire from there. Along the way, we meet his partner, Zeek, and his best friend, Tara.
This is one of the best horror books I have ever read - you get a sampling of everything here, we get ghosts, we get body horror, we get creepy aliens, bad robots! Most importantly, a incisive commentary on the intersection of queer culture and capitalism. The real enemy is unchecked capitalism and monetizing trauma.
I listened to this as an audiobook, and the narration is outstanding. André Santana voices the majority of the novel and truly brings it to life. There are a few scenes that are also written as screen plays and we get some guest narrators from the likes of Mara Wilson and T. Kingfisher, which was a real treat.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the advanced copy.

My first thought when I saw this book was "Are you kidding me with this cast of narrators?!?" But now that I have finished I do think the book shouldn't be marketed as full cast. The majority of the book is one narrator, with a couple of cameo appearances.
That being said - I really liked this genre-bending book, which was my first by this author. It is part horror - part queer fiction - part.... satire maybe? Either way it was a fun read and the narration was really good. I listened between 1.8x and 2.0x and it was comfortable and engaging.
There is some past-present POV, some reenactment of a script, and a very unique plot. I LOVED the concept of the characters from the MMCs films coming to life and causing mayhem. The soft horror components were so well done and creepy.
I feel like this would make a great satire movie.

Loved every second of this book, always thought of chuck tingle as a parody author and didn't ever think to give them a shot... now I regret that and may pick up the rest of their books. Cause this one was literally fireworks. 10/10 auiobook

This one started off really strong but got a little weird for me. I loved the full cast audio narration and the Hollywood film/tv commentary on the marginalization of queer characters. As for the story it was just an okay read for me. Chuck Tingle was a new to me author but I would read more by them. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review!
