For a vampire book with this much violence, it was oddly boring. It started out interesting enough but I wasn't a fan of the direction it took after the first quarter and felt it was a bit messy to follow.

Johnny Compton can write a very good story. Despite a whole lot going on in this one Mr Compton manages o keep things (mostly) straight and there is no lull in the action. He has a good sense of pacing and his writing is solid. Definitely a must read author.

Thank you Netgalley, Mcmillian audio and Johnny Compton for the eArc of Devils Kill Devils.
Narrated by Imani Jade Powers

Having read The Spite House by the same author, I was really pleased getting accepted for this Arc, You just can't go wrong with Angels and Vampires!? The Characters felt pretty well fleshed out with Sarita and her guardian angel Angelo.. I really liked the dynamics between them both, even when Angelo kills someone that Sarita loves, her husband Frank . Sarita then finds herself realising what really lurks in the shadows and finds some horrifying realities.

If you really like vampire lore, gothic world building with horror elements of descriptive gore, this is a great book. Imani Jade Powers has a wonderfully paced voice for this audio book and felt she really suited this genre.

This is not your typical take on a vampire tale but its roots are true to the genre. The demonic bloodsucking, mouth-eating monsters, featured in this tale of ancient evils taking root in modern times, hint at Vampire Hunter D, Blood the Last Vampire and Fledgling staples. Something about this tale hit Pike’s Road to Nowhere and Whisper of Death vibes for me too.

Pros: Truly scary vampiric monsters, the Godmaker, vivid and beautiful descriptions of the darkness and what lies within.

Cons: This was heavy for me and badly timed within my TBR list. Read it when you’ve got time to sit down with it as reading in stints does not do it justice. Also opt to read it versus listen to the audio book. I did not enjoy the narrator’s performance. I wanted someone able to capture the “edge of your seat” graphic violence with more gusto.

Thanks to Net Galley for early access to this title.

Johnny Compton is one of my favorite new horror writers and I really loved Devils Kill Devils when I read it on Kindle. I liked it so much that I was excited to see that the audiobook was available. If anything, I think I enjoy the story even more on audio. The story follows Sarita, who has spent her life mistakenly thinking she has a benevolent guardian angel, until she gets married and her protector murders her husband. Sarita, her brother, her mother-in-law, and her friends end up in wild, dark adventures where they find out about a world that existed alongside their regular safe world the whole time. This narrator is great and clear. and likeable.
I hope Johnny Compton keeps coming out with unique horror stories. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me listen to this audiobook.

I get why this one has a lower average rating. After a dramatic start, it slows down in the middle and becomes rather talk-y. For whatever reason that didn’t bother me much, and I stayed engaged. I think I enjoyed the lore of it all.

This is the story of Sarita, a young woman who is caught up in the plans of supernatural beings without her knowledge. She and others close to her are in a lot of danger, so she goes on a journey to learn what’s going on and fight back.

I loved the mystery behind Angelo and his “guardian angel” role. I also enjoyed the idea of Cela creating some weird religion. I was really into the setting and mythology Compton created.

The weight Sarita’s brother carries because of what he sees as a failure - I thought the way that played out in their relationship was well-written. The tension gets exposed by the events of the story, making for some painful but moving moments.

Cela’s action (or lack of action) at the end kind of confused me, and I’m not sure I buy it… that would be my one complaint about the story.

Otherwise found this very readable and enjoyable! I read it via audiobook, and for once I have no complaints about the narration 😊

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

The concept and title of this book gripped me instantly. When I first dove in, I was vibing with the story, the characters, and the 'religious' aspect of it. It all felt so very dark and had me feeling gross as I got into it (which I loved). However, there was hardly any dialogue. The constant inner monologues of whoever's POV we were on and the pacing really racked my brain. The ride was inconsistently bumpy. The 'vampires' that were introduced into the story as well felt chaotic and messy. Once we hit vampires, I was confused and felt as though I was trying to swim underwater in mud. I think I would have enjoyed this much more if there were some pacing changes, more dialogue among everyone, and perhaps less monsters? The monsters also felt a bit overwhelming.
All in all, I didn't hate it, it just needed some tweaks. But I'm sure there is the perfect person for this read.

If you would have told me this is the same author as Spite House, I would have not believe you. The growth!!!! in this story we follow Sarina who has always had a guardian angel taking care of her…UNTIL one day said angel takes some drastic measures to protect her. At the beginning I thought it was going to be like the bend neck lady from Haunting of Hill House, but this defiantly went into dark fantasy. You get demons, vampires and gods. It was interesting seeing two POVs in this story. It has the vibes of Legion (comic/tv show). My issue is that I wanted to be an obsession dark horror book and went into paranormal fantasy. If you like creatures in your book, high stakes and an independent woman in your books then look no further! This book will out September 24 ✌🏽this will be on my Fable, GoodReads and Lemon8 on Jun 21 at 1320 thank you NetGalley for providing me with an Arc.

Devils Kills Devils was an interesting read. I went into it completely blind not fully sure what to expect other than a bit of supernatural elements being included. The start had me intrigued. A murder by someone who has been around you your entire life and can be perceived as morally grey? Tell me more!

While I was interested at the start, I'll be real that towards the middle-end I kind of lost sight of the plot. Whether that is me or the actual story... who knows! I think the end felt open-ended in a way.

Not quite my favourite read but I think the characters were fascinating! I was really rooting for no deaths for the main lead's close ones and I just wanted to know more about the antigonist.

Really loved Compton’s unique riff on vampire lore. His combination of mythologic and folkloric delivery combined with layered Texas rooted legends really made this story something that sets itself apart from the current vampire renaissance/resurgence in the best way.

The structure of the story telling wasn’t one that I super enjoyed at first and took me a little to fall into but once I switched over to the audiobook (around chapters 6/7) then everything started to fall into place and become a much more enjoyable experience for me.

I did not finish this title. I could not get into the story. I got half way thought it, hoping I would eventually get into it and enjoy this atypical style for me, but it got worse and worse. Also, the narrator could not hold my interest. It might be good for people who are into fantasy stories of gods, good and evil and the like. But it was not for me.

Hunni, just from Chapter 1, this book started with a B A N G! Chapter 1 ALONE will grab you by the throat and will NOT let you go. Devils kills Devils start off extremely strong. What if you had a guardian angel that turns out to be the devil? After the first few chapters, it does take a weird turn, and those so-called guardian angels are vampires. I did get a little confused, but overall, it's not a bad book. It's definitely a book to read during the spooky season. The audiobook is done well, and the narrator did a good job bringing the characters alive.

Thanks to Netgalley, Tor, and Johnny Compton for this ARC eBook in exchange for my honest feedback.

A tale of all consuming hated and the desire for vengeance.... of false prophets and very real devils.... This magnificently cinematic novel brings to mind old Hammer flicks from the 60's - 70's. (In the best of ways.)

I finished this novel in a day. It was impossible to put down. Very rarely does a book draw me in this intensely. I was devouring these pages faster than its vampiric devils could munch off faces.

We're primarily following three perspectives that end up intermingling in dark, gory, gruesome ways.

This novel brought to mind the film 'The Night House', mixed with a little of Dan Simmons 'Carrion Comforts', while being wildly unique.

5/5

The audiobook was thoroughly enjoyable as well. 5/5
