This was interesting, a bit slower paced at start. The audio was fantastic. I’m interested in the other books in this world.
Despite the encouraging reviews from other reader's, I had a difficult time getting into this one. I just don't think it was for me.
Galva always interested me... it was heartbreaking hearing her story in full. Gave me major between two fires vibes of the feeling of hopelessness. But set a beautiful tone that I would never expect any less of. My only gripe is the audio got super grainy at 1.75 speed which is my normal speed but the narrator did a great job, could have done a better job of changing it so I didn't always think galva was the perspective.
Regardless I had already pre-ordered the physical and will be reading through the physical come Tuesday
While this serves as a prequel to The Blacktongue Thief, it can stand on its own....mostly. The style of story telling is memoir-esque and details a gruesome war against the goblin hordes from the perspective of a dukes daughter. Unfortunately, I found the narrative to be emotionally disconnected from the brutality and lacking in impact. I had a hard time staying engaged with the story.
The audio version is, excellent, though. Not only does the narrator do a wonderful job reading, but there are song passages in the story and they were sung beautifully. That was actually the most enjoyable part of the experience for me.
The Daughters' War is set during the tumultuous, goblin-infested period before "The Blacktongue Thief" takes place. The world is ravaged by war, where goblins have devastated cities, decimated fields, and killed countless humans. Survival rests on the shoulders of a new generation of warriors, the daughters who have taken up arms.
Galva is a courageous woman who joins the band of warriors against her family's wishes. The book is told from her point of view. Her dialogue is thought-provoking and builds a vivid and desolate world. The book explores the perils of war on the people, the camaraderie of fellow soldiers, and the fear and bravery when thrust into a situation beyond your control. The soldiers' journey is fraught with moments of hope and despair, reflecting humanity's vulnerability during times of war.
The author does a beautiful job of immersing the reader in the gritty, wartorn world and the characters' emotions. The reader experience was relentless and action-packed from beginning to end. I completely devoured this book in one day. I have not read "The Black Tongue Thief," but I immediately bought it after finishing this book. It was a masterful blend of fantasy, dark magic, hope, and heroics.
I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Netgalley, McMillan Audio, and Tor Books.
