Haven's Rock was supposed to be a fresh start for Casey Duncan and her friends - still a community that takes in the persecuted and gives them a new life, but without the sinister forces who allowed the wrong kind of people to enter the old town of Rockton to cover up a past of crime instead of a past of victimhood. And yet...somehow crime has found it's way into the heart of this new experiment - and Casey is 8 months pregnant, so the clock is ticking to solve this puzzle and protect those she loves most. Even the best-laid plans can go astray...
This was a great book with a twist I definitely did not see coming! The characters were relatable, and the story itself was fluid and smooth. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that I knew "who did it" from early on. However, I had no idea what drove them do cause such havoc. The twist was perfection, and totally blindsided me!
Thank you, St. Martin's Press, and NetGalley for this early review copy!
I just cannot get enough of this series. Unlimited possibilities for an outsider coming in the night, or a newcomer to their community, or even someone they thought they knew well! There are so many possibilities for suspects and who has committed the crimes. In this book, Casey is 8 months pregnant with complications, and she's still her bad ass self, pushing through to try and solve this crime.
Every time a new book from this series comes out, I drop everything to read it. Kelley Armstrong as an author in general does this to me, but specifically this series has really drawn me into Casey's world.
Five bone-chilling stars❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
This just might be my favorite book by Kelley Armstrong! Well done!
Welcome back to the hidden community of Haven’s Rock. The newly built hideaway for those needing to get away from their previous lives.
Detective Casey Duncan and Sheriff Eric Dalton built this community after dismantling their previous hideaway known as Rockton. Yes, this is a spin off series, and in my opinion the better of the two.
Casey is 8 months pregnant. Wasn't exactly planned, but hey, things happen😉. Now after a few scares their baby is about to arrive. Unfortunately, the residents of Haven’s Rock have other ideas, choosing NOW to act up.
One woman flees a would-be abduction at the edge of the forest. The next is not so lucky.
Sorry Casey and Eric, the birth will have to wait! Duty comes first and there’s a dangerous criminal who needs to be brought to justice!
Loved it! Totally engaging from beginning to end. With a bundle of characters to keep track of, you become acquainted with all the residents of Haven’s Rock and their quirks. As for Casey and Eric, you’re going to love their relationship both professionally and as a married couple. And of course, their dog Storm!🐶
Can’t wait for the next installment! Bring it Kelley! I’m so ready!
Thank you to NetGalley and St Martin's Press
The latest book in Kelley Armstrong’s Haven Rock series did not disappoint! Fast paced and I couldn’t put it down!
Thank you, NetGalley, for the chance to read and review!
Once again, Kelley Armstrong has blown me away, this time with Cold As Hell, the third book in the Haven's Rock series. This is a nonstop thrill ride of a book, with plenty of tension and action to keep the reader turning the pages. There is even an added level of anxiety, as Casey's pregnancy is near its end, with possible complications muddying the investigative waters.
The entire series is a variation of the locked room mystery, with a limited set of characters, many of them favourites of the series, who could be the perpetrator of a particular horrific crime. It makes for edge of your seat reading, and I stayed up way too late anxiously reading to the end.
Armstrong never disappoints. I highly recommend this series for thriller and mystery fans, and look forward to the next installment.
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC of #ColdAsHell.
Thank you Netgalley for the advance reader copy of Cold as Hell by Kelley Armstrong in exchange for an honest review. Oh my goodness, what a book! Casey is heavily pregnant, there is a sadistic killer on the loose and it's winter with snow storms. This book kept me engaged and up late reading. In fact, it was snowing here yesterday as I finished the book, made for good atmosphere. I love how the main characters keep growing with each book, I feel like I know them all and part of me wishes I was there with them, they feel so real. Kudos again Kelley Armstrong.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
I've read all of the Rockton and Haven's Rock series and I do enjoy them. This book was another good addition, I was kept guessing for most of the book which is unusual and I like it when that happens. I look forward to the next book in the Haven's Rock series.
Cold as Hell is the 3rd book in Kelley Armstrong's Haven's Rock series. I have not read the previous books in this series, but I did read the first book in the Rockton series (Haven's Rock is a spin off of that series). So, while I am familiar with the setting, I still had to catch up a bit on what has happened in between the two series. I was able to do that without getting lost, so this book works well as a stand alone title.
Our main character, Casey Butler is introduced in that book (City of the Lost). She and her now husband, Eric Dalton have started an offshoot hidden community in the Yukon Territory as a haven for people running from trouble. While Rockton was run by a committee of investors, Haven's Rock is funded by a billionaire who has given the new town managers much more leeway in the running of the town. Casey is 8 months pregnant with their child when one of the residents appears to be drugged while hanging out at the local watering hole. Before that investigation can be solved, another more chilling crime is committed. Who among the 75 residents of Haven's Rock is a monster? With time ticking down to the imminent birth of Casey's child, the power couple works hard to solve the crime.
Other than trying to play a little catch-up in getting to know the characters of Haven's Rock, this story worked. I will definitely go back and read the previous titles in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur books for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I have been reading Kelley Armstrong’s books for so long that I have a first-edition copy of Bitten - and she keeps getting better.
The Yukon books are probably my favourite series of hers, and Cold as Hell is perfect - gripping plot, fast pace, and interesting characters. I love gory crime thrillers and this one does not disappoint.
These books also make me want to visit the Yukon. Maybe I should drop off the grid one day?
Cold as Hell is the third book in the Haven's Rock series. This one had me biting my nails waiting to see what was going to happen. It is gripping and atmospheric with characters you will love. Solving the mystery of who was murdering women took Casey on an even more perilous journey this time around. This is one of my favorite series and I look forward to the next book.
In the third book in this series, Sheriff Eric Dalton and Detective Casey Duncan must find someone in their community who has attacked a resident. She had been drugged and dragged into the woods, but luckily someone heard her and rescued her. Next, they find a dead body in the woods and now tensions are high as everyone wonders who is the killer in their midst. All this while Eric and Casey are expecting their first child and had planned to fly south for more medical care.
I enjoy following the residents of Haven’s Rock, and the experience of living in a remote community in the Yukon. All the residents have been thoroughly vetted before being allowed into the Haven’s Rock, so who was able to sneak into this protected community?
There is a lot of history with the town and its residents, so it is best to have read the previous books in this series to get the backstory. It is well worth it, as this is a series that only gets better with each book.
What can be done if the haven you are building isn't as safe as you had hoped? Haven's Rock is the dream of Sheriff Eric Dalton and Casey, his wife/detective. An attempted kidnapping of a female resident alerts them to danger. Murder, cruelty, sadism and the possibility of a serial killer heightens the urgency to solve the crimes. Casey has her hands full as she tries to oversee this investigation as her own pregnancy demands that she take it slow..., especially since she is close to giving birth.
A dynamic and well-paced addition to the Haven's Rock series-
Thanks to Minotaur Books, Kelley Armstrong and NetGalley for this ARC.
Casey and Dalton are back for another Havens Rock adventure and this one doesn't disappoint. I don't want to give any spoilers but it's a thrilling mystery with all the usual cast of characters. One of Kelley Armstrong's strong points is her world building. This odd little town in the middle of nowhere has its quirks and it's own rules for surviving, but I've come to understand it and it's people. This book's plot stands on its own but I would advise starting with the first book so you will understand the actions and motivations of the characters. They are great reads for winter cozy time or in the heat of summer when you long for some cold and snow.
What a phenomenal book. This series and the Rockton series are my favorites, and Cold as Hell did not disappoint. I was hooked right from the beginning, and immediately pulled back into Haven's Rock. Ms. Armstrong does a fantastic job at world building, and it was fun to reunite not only with the main characters, but also with the side characters. The mystery was immediate, and the twists had me guessing how Casey and Dalton would figure it all out.
This was a quick paced, action-packed book, which was very enjoyable. While I think it's best to read the previous books in the series, this could be read without having all the background info.
I would definitely recommend this book! Looking forward to the next one!
I was excited for this book because it looked like it would be really good. I did not care for the “town” that sounds like a dictatorship. The main characters were terrific and the serial killer finale quite fulfilling but I had a hard time with the way the people had to live. Who would want to live that way: only a few bathrooms shared by all, no easy way to medical care in a severe Injury or medical condition. Maybe for a retreat or to unplug but not every day.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I am a massive Kelley Armstrong fan. (Shockingly the one series I have yet to read is her Otherworld series). Rockton and now its spin off series have had me a tight grip since the first novel. The plot is unique, at least as far as in the books I've read. I love the series. This book was a treat...catching up with my fave characters and meeting some new ones. The actual case this time wasn't my favorite but it was still interesting. I was really invested in Casey's pregnancy and the way they handled the other residents during the case. Cold As Hell is not the best place to jump into this series. I'd highly recommend jumping into the first Rockton book and experiencing the entire journey of Casey and company. This author knows how to engage her audience and definitely is skilled at writing characters with unique voices who readers can come to care about.
The Rockton series has to be one of my favorite series by Armstrong, which is why I was so excited that the series continued with a spin-off, Haven's Rock. And, if possible, I love this series even more and the latest, Cold As Hell, is definitely my favorite to date of said series. I absolutely adored this read. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I was completely stumped as to who-dunn'it and was excited each time a new twist and turn showed up to throw me even more off the trail.
I loved watching Casey and Eric's relationship grow even more with each new surprise that came their way and with the upcoming arrival of their baby. I have loved these two as a couple from the beginning and their love for one another and their quirky little town just gets stronger and better each new installment.
This is a series you don't want to miss out on. Quirky, original, and so much fun, it really is one that stands out, and I drop everything to start right away. It is so worth the read, I can't recommend it enough.
I must admit I was concerned about the series after reading book 2, but I am so glad I took the chance on Cold as Hell (book 3). The composition of the residents of Haven's Rock (including couples and children) was worrisome for me, but the challenges they bring to the community make this series more than merely a continuation of Rockton (a series I thoroughly enjoyed). I do worry about Emilie's age, but I am confident that she (and Armstrong) have a succession plan in place. I am looking forward to a long run of Haven's Rock, and highly recommend this series.
This installment of the Haven's Rock series finds Casey and Eric on the hunt for a killer in the middle of a snow storm. After one woman is drugged and taken into the forest, but luckily escapes; the whole town is on alert. But it only gets worse when another woman goes missing. Casey and Eric must found her, figure out who they can trust, deal with multiple issues caused by the storm, and handle the last weeks of Casey's pregnancy. It's a balancing act that will test their characters and the town of Haven's Rock itself.
It was great to return to this familiar setting and to once again follow along with Casey as she must work with limited resources in the midst of a harsh Yukon winter in her sanctuary town where everyone is running from something and secrets abound. I loved the addition of her pregnancy within this story and the myriad of challenges that go along with that. It's always great when we get the human side of Casey and Eric's characters as a balance to the policing procedural aspects of these books. I especially enjoy the development of their relationship and their ability, without a lot of drama, to meet whatever challenges life throws at them and to compromise when necessary to meet both of their needs. As for the crime in this one, it was particular shocking, but handled well. Kelley Armstrong does not sugar-coat violence, but neither does she over-dramatize or over-describe it. I did not predict the ending here which is also fun; although I do think that some mystery readers probably will catch on earlier.
I recommend this book and this series as a whole to mystery lovers, people who enjoy cold, northern settings, or those looking for a tough yet relatable female narrator. The town of Haven's Rock will keep you coming back book after book as you become invested in its purpose and enamored with its residents.
