Fun and silly book about a rat who thinks squirrels have it all and tries to become one too. I think kids would love this, especially if they enjoyed “Those Darn Squirrels.”
This would also be a great book get in classrooms and school libraries and could be used to introduce comparing and contrasting animals or simply appreciating yourself for who you are because others might not have it all like you think. Very cute, and definitely a fun read!
Squirrel-ish is a cute book about a rat who decides he wants to be a squirrel. He doesn’t like how people scream and run away when they see rats but they feed squirrels peanuts. He does everything he can to try to transform himself into a squirrel only to learn that maybe being a rat isn’t so bad afterall. This cute book has nice, interesting illustrations and a large, easy to read font. It is a fun story that kids will enjoy. I think this would be a fabulous addition to my classroom library and could definitely see myself reading this to my class. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this sweet book.

This is a delightful book about a rat that thinks he is a squirrel. The illustrations are beautifully done and complement the text. They are filled with even small details. This is a book written for children between 18 months and 7. Parents will want to read this book to their children, and they can all laugh together at the rat’s antics.
Rat thought it would be easier to be a squirrel, after all people give squirrels nuts and corn. People think squirrels are cute, but people don’t like rats; they run and scream when they see a rat. Rat decides to try to look like a squirrel. He tries pinning his ear down but that doesn’t help, so he tries to disguise his tail. He tries several different methods but all the tails he crafts just don’t work. He goes from cotton balls, to feathers, to spaghetti but none of them work. The closest he comes is to straw from a broom!
Rat makes his way through the park. He has big dreams until he sees the dogs and they see him. Suddenly, Rat realizes being a rat isn’t so bad.
This book is not only fun, it also has a bit of a lesson. Learn to be a problem solver and be resourceful. You might not always have what you need but you can usually come up with something you can use. Always remember to be true to yourself. You are who you are! You do not have to pretend to be someone else. Always be happy with who and what you are.
Such a cute book! The kids loved it! A cute funny story about nobody really having it easy. Such an important lesson to learn.
The kids loved this book! So funny and cute! Perfect story time story with a life lesson and lots of crafting ideas for afterwards, how would you make a squirrel tail? Highly recommend, I'm still chuckling. I look forward to seeing what this author does next.
This is a great little story for kids to show them that not everyone is perfect. The rat thinks the squirrel has it so easy until he figures out a disguise and finds out that the squirrel's life is not always perfect. Really cute easy to read story with great illustrations.
This had me chuckling out loud! I never gave it much thought - the differences between how we see squirrels and rats. It’s funny how a children’s book got me thinking about how the little critters must feel when people freak out in their presence. However, I still don’t think I’m any where close to being happy to see a rat. Maybe I’ll at least give them a little grace next time.
This book was absolutely perfect! The drawings had a lot of detail in the pictures, lots of page variety, a clear and funny story. A perfect example of this is the very last page. It made me chuckle out loud and kids will love it! As for the coloring, I liked that it was soft, but I think that to match the tone of the story a bit better the colors could have been a little bit brighter (like the cover).
I think that, even though it's not really apparent, there are two little messages here. The first one is to be resourceful and be a problem-solver. The rat's different ideas to become more "squirrel-ish" were really clever and it will definitely encourage kids to be creative, too. The second message is to be happy with the skin you're in. This is demonstrated by the ending.
I know for a fact that kids will be so invested in this book when it comes out, and it will be a true winner. It will soon become a favorite and kids will want to read it over and over again. That's one of the other great things about this book: it has "favorite material", meaning that it has the potential to be read again without it being boring or anticlimactic the second, third, fourth time around.
Bravo!
A fun book about being different and "grass is always greener" mentality. Easy to follow and read with lovely illustrations I think there will be many readers who will be delighted with this book.
Cute, funny, and light read.
The illustrations were colorful, fit well with the content, and really added to the story-line. My littles (2 and 5) were giggling at the different tails that the rat was trying to make.
The content was entertaining and kept my littles engaged. It was easy for them to understand and they really enjoyed the story. I will be recommending.
Thank you NetGalley, Bambi Edlund, and Owlkids books for allowing my family to review.
Okay, let's be honest....this rat has a point. They really ARE similar to squirrels in a lot of ways so it's a bit unfair how they're treated. On the other hand, I suppose squirrels are a tiny bit cuter. Maybe. This particular rat is very cute and I would share my French Fries with him anytime.
This is a wonderful story with a "grass is always greener" kind of theme. Kids learn to not judge the characters by how they look and hopefully take that lesson out into the world with them. I look forward to seeing this one on the shelves. It would be wonderful for storytimes!!
An adorable and fun story about a rat that thinks squirrels have it easier…so he sets out to become a squirrel and find out!
This would be such a good storytime read, and will definitely elicit lots of giggles.
Thank you to NetGalley and OwlKid Books for this digital ARC!
Oh my gosh! We loved this story as our family bedtime story last night. The kids loved the adventure the squirrel took us on. Such a fun kids book!
