Rosanne Parry once again weaves an engaging and entertaining tale that will keep readers hooked to the page. She captures the voice of animals so that you can imagine the thoughts and needs on the animal level. Instead of giving the wolves human needs, she truly captures what I imagine a wolf actually thinks and feels.

Rosanne Parry writes the most delightful animal stories while keeping them well within the realm of reality and possibility. This one about a young wolf called Warm by his siblings is particularly touching because he is not the fastest or bravest or largest of his pack. He is all but unremarkable in most ways other than his determination. When a larger white wolf pack invades the territory in the mountains where his family lives he becomes the sole protector of his younger brothers and sisters who are just pups and must feed and protect them as they struggle to survive. As he grows more experienced he becomes a leader worthy of following and finds inner hidden strengths to fight back for his home. All of this is based on situations real wolves face, including wolves being hunted and killed by farmers and ranchers. Often it’s sad or bleak but it gives young readers a glimpse into the world of wolves.

Even if a reader has not read the first book in the series, A Wolf Called Wander, they will still really enjoy this middle grades wildlife story. The book is a quick read, with realistic illustrations and lots of adventure from the perspective of a wolf as he grows from pup to pack leader. There are some descriptions of killing an elk by the wolves that may be hard for animal lovers to read. However, this was a sweet story with a loveable main character. The action and realistic fiction from an animal's perspective will be a popular pick. This is based on a true story, which I found to be very inspiring.

I have read A Wolf Called Wander and now A Wolf Called Fire to my sons, and my 7-year-old, who enjoys animal-perspective fiction, was enthralled. The stories carryover characters and though often separated, the brother wolves do reunite in both books, which we loved.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

2.5 stars.

This is an objectively well written book, it is just not for me.

It was better than the first book in my opinion because there was more interaction and conversation between the wolves. Warm wasn’t alone for most of it like Wander was.

I liked Snow a lot! She was very brave to leave her original pack to be with Warm who was a lot kinder.

I liked the message of ‘you don’t have to be the biggest or fastest wolf to be the best.’ It’s encouraging for people to read to give them courage if they are feeling down about themselves.

I’m sad I didn’t see most of the artwork since that was my favorite part about the first book, but what was in the ARC was very beautiful! That really enhances the story so I’m glad illustrations are a part of the novel.

I like that there is a section about the real life tales of the wolf that was written about in this book, as well as the other facts about wolves and other aspects of nature in the back. It is very educational for kids who may read this. And for adults who may not know these things either!

If you really love the science behind nature and animals, this book is for you. If you are more of a casual lover of animals then you may find this a little boring.

100/100 or 5.0 stars

This was as enjoyable as the first book that focuses on Swift. It was so good! It has all of the emotions and more.

I know this is the fourth in this series, but this did directly work with book one. I will be trying to get a hold of the second and third book in this series, as I have had such a good time with it so far! I will be buying this book once it comes out as well to add to my collection. Love it!

A Wolf Called Fire has similarities with one of the author’s previous works, A Wolf Called Wander. In A Wolf Called Fire, Warm must take care of his Mom’s pups when their pack is attacked by another pack. The adult wolves are killed, Warm’s siblings are captured or run away, and Warm is left for four young wolves to protect and train. They run to a safe place and learn to survive. Eventually Warm and his little pack battle the other pack. They survive the fight and a lightning storm and become their own, larger pack when other wolves join them. Warm’s name is changed to Fire. The book includes lots of great information about wolves. The ARC did not have illustrations yet so I can’t comment on that aspect.

Rosanne Parry returns to the world of "A Wolf Called Wander" and brings us Warm's story. The book didn't touch on wildfires as much as I expected, but Parry wove a compelling narrative of the smallest wolf forced to become a leader. The scene where Warm and Swift are torn away from each other was devastating to read again - but the over all outcome of this tale is well-worth it. My middle grade audience will love this sequel to a book that many of them deeply love.

Thank you to Greenwillow Books and NetGalley for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This stand-alone companion to A Wolf Called Wander is based on a real-life wolf in Yellowstone National Park called Wolf 8. Warm is the smallest of his litter. His siblings hone their wrestling skills but Warm watches and learns. As their pack is attacked by the ice wolves, Warm leads his younger pup siblings away to safety. When Warm realizes that his pack is not coming back, he must become the leader and train his younger siblings how to hunt with respect to the land and to hide from the pack that destroyed his family. He was supposed to be the watcher but can he become the leader of the pack?
What a beautifully written story! I am looking forward to seeing the final copy as the digital ARC did not have the artwork. The story itself is not very long but there is a lot of information at the end about the wolves, the land terrain, the original people inhabiting that land, and how climate change is impacting it all. I would recommend this title for grades 3 and up.

Following a wolf from puppyhood onward as he and his pack face insurmountable odds, A Wolf Called Fire is an excellent middle-grade novel. Kids will be so excited about this book, much like her prior books. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and feel for these lovely creatures.

There is a strong conservation message within this title and kids are even given ways to help.

I am so excited to add this to my library and even know which student will check it out first!

Thank you to Net Galley, HarperCollins Children's Books, and Greenwillow Books for the DRC! All opinions are my own.

Summary:

"A Wolf Called Fire" by Rosanne Parry is about a wolf named Warm who is the smallest and quietest of his pack. Due to his small size, Warm is often bullied by his brother, Sharp. Life for the pack is idyllic as days are filled with developing hunting skills. This changes when an enemy wolf pack attacks and invades their territory. The ice wolves attack causing Warm to being separated from his family. Warm's mother second litter of pups becomes his responsibility after her death. Warm sets out to find his family whom he believes survived the attack to help him raise the pups. Follow Warm as he recounts his fears and perseverance of becoming a leader of his wolf pack.

Opinion:

"A Wolf Called Fire" is a heartwarming story of a wolf overcoming his fear of leading his pack. After an attack by enemy wolves, Warm must make a decision that impacts his siblings survival. The story examines Warm's inner struggle of self-doubt that has stayed with him since he was a pup himself. As Warm travels and encounters many dangers in hopes reuniting with his family, he slowly develops confidence to lead. The scenery descriptions takes you to the mountains of Oregon and the world of the wolf pack. I enjoyed reading Warm's story of rising above his fears and doubts. The book provides fun background information on wolves, animals and many more topics included in the story. A highly recommended read.

I received an electronic ARC from HarperCollins Children's Books through NetGalley.
Parry brings us the story of another wolf who struggles and finds his way to leading a pack. Warm is one of the smallest in his litter. He doesn't have the gifts his brothers and sisters have but his pack believes in him and encourages him. When the pack is attacked, he leads the new pups away and protects them. As they grow, he finds ways to keep them safe. Readers see them become their own pack though Warm continues to have doubts about his abilities. It is only in the final confrontation with another pack and leading his pack through fire to save them that he realizes he is a strong pack leader. His pack gives him the new name of Fire. I appreciate how Parry brings these characters to life. It is based on a true story of one wolf and she includes that information at the end of the book. She offers other informative text and references so readers can learn more. Looking forward to sharing this one with classes.

Oh this book is beautiful. The cover caught my attention and then it being about wolves, I was very interested from the get go. BUT ONCE I OPENED IT. Beautiful! I really liked the writing style and the illustrations inside this juvenile chapter book were unexpected but absolutely lovely. This is a good read for fans of books like Pax or really any fan of wolves in general. Lovely book!

Another whimsical addition to the Voice of the Wilderness series by Rosanne Parry! This story follows a wolf named Warm that finds himself unexpectedly the alpha of his own pack. He has to learn about himself and about leadership to navigate challenges that he never expected to encounter as the smallest in his family. It is also incredible to know that this story is inspired by a real wolf. My children love these books and how they are written from the perspective of the animal, while teaching very human emotions and life lessons. This story especially focuses on learning to lead with grace and collaboration.
