Author: Vicki Delany
Series: A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery #10
Publisher: Crooked Lane Books
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Pub Date: January 14, 2025

This is 10th book in the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery series. Although the characters are recurring; I believe it can be read as a standalone.
If this is your first, I will give some background (plus it helps me remember all the characters!!!)

Setting: West London on Cape Cod.
Gemma Doyle- a transplanted Englishwoman, has returned to the quaint town of West London on Cape Cod to manage her Great Uncle Arthur's Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium,
Jayce Wilson – Gemma’s best friend along with
Mrs. Hudson manages the Tea Room that is attached to her book shop.
Ashleigh - is Gemma's assistant.
Bunny Leigh – Ashleigh’s mother is a former pop star.
Ryan Ashburton - is a detective and Gemma’s main squeeze.
Andy Whitehall - is Jayne's fiancé and owner of the restaurant, Blue Water Cafe.
Donald Morris – hopes to speak to the spirit of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Non-recurring characters
Madame Lavalier – is the medium and her assistant is Mary Moffatt.

This story starts with Gemma and friends heading to London for Pippa’s wedding. When they arrive, Gemma finds her ex-husband, Paul Erikson waiting for her. Paul has a rare book he wants her to see. Gemma agrees to meet him at their old shop, “Trafalgar Fine Books”.
The next day Gemma arrives, accompanied by Grant, a rare book dealer, but they aren’t greeted by Paul. They find him dead in his office.
And so it begins!

There is no doubt - I am a Vicki Delany fan. Additionally I have listened to several audiobooks and love narrator Kim Hicks and especially enjoy she continues to be the audiobook performer- to me she is Gemma Doyle!

In this case I have to imagine her voice.

I have always been a mystery book fan but more recently have been reading psychological thrillers; this cozy mystery reminded me why I love mysteries! Most cozy mystery fans enjoy reading a story that includes a book shop. One that has an adjacent tea room has got to be the BEST!
BTW: I actually did a Google search for “Sherlock Holmes Tea Set” and Yes! They are available!

Ms. Delany delivered another enjoyable read. As always I am looking forward to the next adventure of Gemma and friends!
I read " Elementary She Reads" which was the first book in this series back in 2017.

Ms. Delany is the author of four cozy mystery series: In addition to this, the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop series from Crooked Lane, The Tea by the Sea series from Kensington Books, and the Year Round Christmas series from Penguin she also writes the Lighthouse Library series under the pen of Eva Gates. I also love that series!)

Want to thank NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for granting me this early eGalley.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for January 14, 2025.

Sherlock Holmes bookstore owner Gemma Doyle and her posse are in London for her spy sister Pippa's wedding. Unfortunately Gemma's ex-husband is found dead in his bookshop after speaking to Gemma.

Gemma feels a bit of an emotional obligation to her ex so carefully starts nosing around. The London setting and Gemma's family details add interest. We find out a lot more about Pippa although nothing specific -- just that she is secretive, obviously has enormous pull with anything governmental or law enforcement related, and is as tough and direct as her sister.

As usual, old secrets lie behind what happens and Gemma uncovers them. We are even treated to a melee in an after hours nightclub open only to the elite of London. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Gemma has returned to London, England for her sister Pippa’s wedding, along with her friends from America. We learn more about Gemma’s past and see more of her family. Pippa is obviously in Intelligence, though her position is hush-hush annd important. After Gemma finds a murder victim, her friends all rally round to help investigate, between sight-seeing trips.
It’s great to see more of Gemma and see her becoming more well-rounded as a person. She’s learned to appreciate her friends. It was fun to see them all in England (where Donald can immerse himself in Sherlock lore).
I enjoyed the story and the mystery, which kept me hooked from the beginning.
Thanks to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for the ARC.

After a few book in the series that fell flat to me, this one feels like the first few in the series. That had the Gemma we all knew and loved. And I'm glad. And I enjoyed the mystery as well.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Vicki Delany for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for The Incident of the Book in the Nighttime coming out January 14, 2025. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Vicki Delany is one of my favorite cozy mysteries author! I’ve read a ton of her books. I’ve only read the book before this one in this series. So I definitely need to go back and read the other ones. But I was excited to check out this book. The fact that the victim is Gemma’s ex-husband is pretty crazy. I love the setting in London. It was definitely a perfect Sherlock setting. It was fun to see Gemma and her sister. I loved the mystery. I’m definitely reading more books by this author!

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves bookstore cozy mysteries!

Gemma and friends travel to England for sister Pippa’s wedding to rare book dealer Grant who moved to England after meeting and falling for Pippa during her visit to West London . Suffering from jet lag and leaving to rest, the last person that Gemma expected to encounter was her ex-husband, Paul. An ex-husband that Ryan doesn’t yet know about.

Jayne and Donald always have Gemma’s back and this time is no different as they travel through Gemma’s old stomping grounds looking for answers to the death of Paul. Donald even gets a chance to use his brolly again and Ryan gets a punch or two in himself.

We are treated to more about Gemma’s past before she moved to America. As well as the relationship between Gemma and Pippa.

The subplot felt a bit forced. I get why it was included but still a bit forced.

I liked that some characters from their past adventure in England make an appearance. I always enjoy Gemma’s family, this time is no exception.

I enjoyed the investigation, Gemma’s reminiscence and all the characters. I think it made Gemma more human. I have liked her through the series but in some cases she came across cold. We learn that she, like the rest of us can be swept away and make unwise decisions.

Thank you to #NetGalley and #CrookedLaneBooks for the opportunity to do an early read and share my thoughts on the story.

Happy Reading!

It’s hard to believe that this is the 10th book in the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery by Vicki Delany. Sometimes when there are that many books in a series, they can get repetitive, but that is not the case in this series. Each book in this series just keeps getting better. I loved this addition to the series which involved the gang traveling to London for Gemma’s sisters’ wedding. The characters were all at their best and I laughed out loud numerous times at the characters' amusing antics and situations they found themselves in. It was a really twisting and turning path to find the killer and I didn’t figure it out until the very end. I hope this series continues for a long time. Gemma and her friends are a joy to read about!

Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. All opinions are my own.

The Incident of the Book in the Nighttime is the tenth book in the Sherlock Holmes Book Shop Mystery series. The gang is in England for Gemma’s sister’s wedding. It was a really good mystery revolving around a person from Gemma’s past, which made the story very interesting.

This is a great book (& series). As always with this author, the book is well written. The story moves at a nice, brisk pace. The romance aspect of the book is light, without a bunch of drama – which is nice. Gemma’s a unique character (very logical), which makes the book and series a lot of fun to read.

Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this fabulous ARC. I have posted this review to my Goodreads and Bookbub accounts, & will post to my Amazon account on the publication date, 1/14/25.

Gemma is back and headed to London for her sister's wedding.

And who should be waiting for her after? Paul! Yes, Paul has tracked her down and is desperate to talk to her about a rare book.

Against her better judgement, she goes to the bookstore the next morning only to find Paul is dead at his desk with no rare book to be found.

Gemma and Jane jump right in to find out what happened to Paul and why, putting themselves in harms way once again.

This is such a good series and the characters are very well done.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book!

Seriously, I don’t think Vicki Delany has had a bad book yet! She always writes cozy mystery so well, assembling a stellar cast and creating interesting situations that revolve around the murder as well as more intrigue. Gemma is the ringleader of course, but she wouldn’t get far in solving the mystery without her friends and family.

I really enjoyed reading about London for this one; it’s not somewhere I’ve visited but the descriptions were fabulous in this novel and made me see it through Gemma’s eyes. I e definitely missed some books in this series so I’m looking forward to going back to Gemma’s hometown as well.

The actual mystery was great! Definitely a few good red herrings and it’s not who you expected. This was a five star read for me, a perfect cozy for those looking to dip their feet into the genre. Five stars.

4.5 stars and TL;DR this is my favorite book in the series!

Gemma and the West London crew are visiting London for her sister and her friend's wedding. While exiting the hotel where the wedding is taking place, Gemma's ex-husband is waiting for her to ask her to come and look at a book that is "the real deal" according to him. Gemma along with some of the crew goes to see him the next morning where he is found murdered in his office. Gemma must put together the clues to figure out who killed him before returning home to West London.

This book was so good! I really enjoy the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mysteries but I thought this was a step above the rest. The story moves fast, the characters were compelling, and the mystery was challenging. I liked that we got to go to London again and it wasn't this massive scene at the end. I was also happy to see some characters coming back like Pippa who I absolutely adore. I was also excited to meet some of the new characters that I hope make their way back into the books like Genevieve. I had a lot of fun reading this book. I don't think it is necessary to read every other book but the characters would be familiar if you have. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries and amateur sleuths.

Thank you to NetGalley, Crooked Lane Books, and Vicki Delaney for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC. All opinions are my own.

Gemma and her friends are back in England for her sisters wedding. The least likely person Gemma expects to see, her ex husband. She can’t go anywhere without a body turning up. She jumps into help the police. Twist and turns. Recommend reading this series

As the weather gets colder and breezier, Gemma Doyle, boyfriend Detective Ryan Ashburton, and friends Jane Wilson and Donald Morris, are in London attending her sister Pippa’s wedding. The last person Gemma expected to run into was her ex-husband, Paul, but seeing him in the lobby at the wedding reception sets in motion a series of events leading to an unexplained death, missing valuable documents, and threats to national security. Can they solve the case before leaving for home or will this be the one that got away for Gemma and her friends?

Book ten in this excellent cosy crime series was once again a fun read. The main protagonists were all present with their own parts to play in an original and fast moving investigation which concluded in a surprising but entirely satisfactorily manner. I hope it won't be too long before we can visit with Gemma and Jayne, once again, back home in West London, Massachusetts.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Crooked Lane Books, but the opinions expressed are my own. This is highly recommended.

Gemma and the gang are back in London for her sister’s wedding. She sure didn’t expect to run into her ex-husband at the wedding. And she certainly didn’t expect to find him dead the next day!

Who would want Paul dead? Even though they were over years ago, Gemma just can’t that Paul murderer get away with it. Will she butt heads with her sister, Pippa, again and cause another potential international incident, or will the murderer make this Gemma’s final chapter?

I love when the gang travels, especially to London, England. The whole premises that Gemma co-owns a Sherlock Holmes themed bookstore with her uncle in the United States, and there are references to the Baird throughout the book, it doesn’t overtake the entire story. Every entry in this series has a solid mystery crafted with plenty of clues and red herrings that keep you wondering until almost the final reveal. it’s a great series and I highly recommend it!

Bookshop owner Gemma Doyle, along with friends, heads to London to attend her sister's wedding. She
unexpectedly runs into her ex-husband who sets a meeting about a book. When Gemma arrives the next day
to the bookstore she formerly owned with her ex, she discovers him dead in an office chair. Why was he murdered?
As Gemma investigates people listed in his contacts, more questions arise. Was her ex really looking to meet
with her or was it one of the wedding guests? Will information uncovered by Gemma have any impact on
her sister's top secret government position? An enjoyable addition to the series.

Gemma is back for a visit to her hometown of London, England to celebrate with all and sundry (including her BFF and her US police detective boyfriend) for her sister's wedding. Enter (and exit) her ex-husband who says he has a book for her. Before she can find out what he really wants she (complete with witnesses) finds him dead of strangulation in his office above his shabby bookstore. Good thing she (and her ex-copper dad) know the DI on the case as the investigation gets a bit sticky. It might stand alone, but it's so much better having read some of the earlier in series.
Loved it! The whole series is a winner!
I requested and received a free temporary EARC from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. Thank you! Avail Jan 14, 2025

I have always loved this series, and this installment did not disappoint. Gemma and her New London friends travel to London for Pippa's (Gemma's sister) wedding. The plot thickens when Gemma's ex-husband is murdered, and she can't resist diving into the investigation. As always, the cast of characters is delightful, and I particularly enjoyed the intriguing glimpse into Pippa's top-secret job. While it wasn't my absolute favorite in the series, the change of location added an exciting twist, and the array of characters brought plenty of humor to the story.

I have been following this series from the beginning. I have enjoyed it all along. This was not my favorite. Gemma and her friends have returned to London to attend her sister's wedding. Gemma's ex-husband turns up and then the next day is dead. For some reason, although Gemma keeps saying that she doesn't want to spend time on it, she investigates his death. I felt like the book was too similar to the last time that the group of them went to London. It wasn't quite as fresh or interesting to me.
