So cute! And hilarious. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the free eARC in exchange for my honest opinions.

I had the pleasure of reading The Book of Purrs: Everyday Thoughts from Your Feline Friends by Luís Coelho, and it was an utterly delightful experience. As someone who shares their life with cats, I found the book to be a humorous and lighthearted reflection of their quirky personalities.
The book offers a series of amusing "thoughts" imagined from the perspective of a cat, covering everything from their insatiable curiosity to their perfectly timed naps.

3* - generally enjoyable, this book is what you expect it to be, and that is great, if you are in the mood for gentle amusement / prodding at existential dread / basic affirmations etc in the form of cat cartoons.

This book is amazing. It would be a great gift for any introspective or mindful cat lover in your life.

The illustrations are beautiful and the stand alone, page long comics are a great mix of cat-isms (never leaving their human's alone in the bathroom, unpredictable bites, and eternal hunger, to name a few), motivational insights from the perspective of cats, and reminders that the here and now is the only place we actually are...said, of course, how the cats might see it.

This book really is so clever. I want so may of these comics to be on shirts or greeting cards, but instead I'll share them all with my friends at once in the form of a book!

This was cute. As a Cat Lady, I always enjoy reading books that celebrate the silly little creatures we let into our home. This book captured the essence of cats well, but I would have enjoyed it more had there been different types of cats. As such, I wasn't sure if it was a gaggle of black cats or simply one or two cats as the main 'characters'. It also would have helped vary up the art a bit.

This is an adorable little book that is purr-fect for cat lovers everywhere. Luis Coelho's watercolor illustrations are beautiful with a close attention to detail, as the different cats' fur textures indicate. The text, often written in rhyming couplets, is too cute, but I wish that some of the comics were narrative-based, telling more of a story. I appreciate Coelho's emphasis on black cats, which still get less love overall than other feline friends. The Book of Purrs, with its silly illustrations and sweet sentiments, is just what I needed right now.

The Book of Purrs by Luis Coelho
Pub Date: Oct 22 2024

I have read many of these "instagram (@purr.in.ink) art series turned book / collection" type graphic novels, and my opinion is much the same as it always it: if you enjoy this artists work, and want a physical collection, you can't go wrong with this.

I really like this art style and the conceit of the variety of cats with a variety of moods for different situations. However, I think some of the charm of this particular style is lost when you read dozens of these comics back-to-back. Overall though, it's a cute and quick read - helpful for meeting Goodreads challenge goals or when you need a moment to contemplate and relax.

A lovely cute book filled with uplifting and inspiring messages with sweet kitties thrown in. This reminded me a little of the boy, the mole, the fox and the horse for its poignant messages and the way the illusions are drawn, as if they are on thick parchment. I really liked how you can dip in and out of this book when you need to and it can make you laugh, lift your mood or make you feel all warm and fuzzy.
As a cat owner I especially love “look into my eyes and forget you already fed me” and “by the power of the purr and the beauty of the fur good things will occur”
This would make the ‘purrfect’ gift for a cat lover.

Portuguese artist Luis Coelho has created the most delightful gift book, ideal for cat lovers, or anyone that needs a reason to smile.

Full of single pages of affirmations, jokes, and observations, all presented by the most adorably cute black cats. Cat lovers will find a kinship with the author, obviously a cat lover themselves, and will find plenty to make them smile. But everyone will be captivated by the gorgeous artwork, and positive message that the book portrays, making this an ideal gift for any cat or book lover, or indeed anyone that just wants to be able to open a book and smile.

5/5 stars

This was a purrfectly lovely little book, filled with cute paintings and positive messages! I really enjoyed this, it's a light and happy thing that helped take my mind off of life for a short time :) I love black cats, and love the paintings that were done of them in this book! And the random teefs that pop out when the cats want to get all bitey are super cute lol

*This was a NetGalley book [original due date 10.22.2024] and I have just now found in eBook form on hoopla to read and review. I was unable to do so originally due to a bad file with no pictures, illustrations, and/or or text [despite several download attempts. The review is below. **

I follow Mr. Coelho on Insta and was thrilled when he announced he was releasing a book and then was excited to see it was on NetGalley [even more so when I was able to snag a copy].

THIS was just what I needed right now; in this time of political unrest, upheaval and fear, a book about cats [that is filled with Mr. Coelho's lovely black cat illustrations and the wisdom they impart] calmed my anxiety, made me laugh, and oft reminded me of what is really important. It also reminded me to not neglect my friends, to love deeply, and to be kind ALWAYS [and that a well placed BLEP can diffuse almost any situation! IYKYK LOL]

I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to be lifted up, to laugh or just needs a calm read. You will not be disappointed.

Thank you to NetGalley, Luis Coelho, and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Oh this book is a purr-fect read for when you need a little pick-me-up! It is chock-full of poignant messages about life's hard times and advice for looking on the bright side of things, as told by our favorite furballs. The artwork is gorgeous and I enjoyed every page!

You know…I actually quite enjoyed this. And my kid was ENTHRALLED. I hesitate to list this as a “graphic novel,” as it’s all single-page comics, and many could just as well be motivational posters. A fair bit of these comics are about self-care, self-love, and ignoring the haters.

And biting.

Man, there’s a lot of comics about biting things. Out of love.

This book is probably going to be all the rage in the Secret Santa community, this year. And it’s not too bad a gift, so long as your giftee listed cat stuff as a want. Most people who have spent a little bit of time on social media have probably seen a couple of these comics, so having them all-together is nice. I, personally, wouldn’t have purchased this for myself, but I am glad I was given an ARC for review.

While I do appreciate Coelho’s focus on black cats, which often aren’t given the love they deserve, they do get a bit repetitive. Heck, maybe next book they’ll branch out. A grey tabby or something.

So, overall, cute and fun. Probably not something to get yourself, but definitely a gift to any cat lover.

The Book of Purrs: Everyday Thoughts from Your Feline Friends by Luis Coelho is a graphic book that anyone who lives with a cat or spends a lot of time around them will easily relate to. You’ll want to share every single page with a friend who has a cat. As someone who lives with a black cat—who’s actually watching me right now, I loved seeing their unique quirks come to life here. Recognizing moments from my daily life, like being pestered for food while I write this, made me feel like snapshots of these little encounters had been preserved. After reading the pages with motivational messages, I find myself seeing my cats in a more positive light every time I look at them. Plus, the use of colours to deepen the message really heightens the emotions. It’s so easy to immerse yourself in each scene. I also think that books like this help cultivate a love for animals. It might even give those who fear cats or don’t know them well the courage to approach them. Their insistent behaviours, constant food requests, emotional sides, playful moments, adventurous escapades, good energy, feisty streaks, and, sadly, the inevitable day they’ll leave us and the emptiness they’ll leave behind… It’s all beautifully captured here.

Reading tip: The effect can fade if you read too many pages in one sitting, and it can start to feel repetitive. Since there’s no continuous storyline, it’s best to read just a few sections at a time—like a collection of aphorisms or poems. You can even just grab it off the shelf and read a random page whenever you feel like it.

Note: If you follow the artist’s account on social media (purr.in.ink), you may have already seen many of these. Still, it’s lovely to have a copy on your shelf.

A cute, adorable and entertaining collection that I finished on a train ride. I like how the book is filled with so many positive affirmations and good reminders — some of which rhyme really well — without taking itself too seriously. Thank you for this spot of brightness at just the right time ❤️

This book was just really cute. I loved the illustrations of the cats, and even though they're not super detailed, they still all have personality.

Coelho collects many of his popular Purr in Ink comics along with some new ones in this delightful book. Most of the comics are filled with hilarity or some cat wisdom, though a few are sad and will tug at the reader's heart (particularly the last couple of comics). While the book does end on a sad note, readers will laugh through most of the comics and recognize their own cats in the silly antics of the cats filling this volume. This book is sure to be treasured by many a reader and cat lover.
