The Book of Purrs: Everyday Thoughts from Your Feline Friends by Luis Coelho is a graphic book that anyone who lives with a cat or spends a lot of time around them will easily relate to. You’ll want to share every single page with a friend who has a cat. As someone who lives with a black cat—who’s actually watching me right now, I loved seeing their unique quirks come to life here. Recognizing moments from my daily life, like being pestered for food while I write this, made me feel like snapshots of these little encounters had been preserved. After reading the pages with motivational messages, I find myself seeing my cats in a more positive light every time I look at them. Plus, the use of colours to deepen the message really heightens the emotions. It’s so easy to immerse yourself in each scene. I also think that books like this help cultivate a love for animals. It might even give those who fear cats or don’t know them well the courage to approach them. Their insistent behaviours, constant food requests, emotional sides, playful moments, adventurous escapades, good energy, feisty streaks, and, sadly, the inevitable day they’ll leave us and the emptiness they’ll leave behind… It’s all beautifully captured here.

Reading tip: The effect can fade if you read too many pages in one sitting, and it can start to feel repetitive. Since there’s no continuous storyline, it’s best to read just a few sections at a time—like a collection of aphorisms or poems. You can even just grab it off the shelf and read a random page whenever you feel like it.

Note: If you follow the artist’s account on social media (purr.in.ink), you may have already seen many of these. Still, it’s lovely to have a copy on your shelf.

A cute, adorable and entertaining collection that I finished on a train ride. I like how the book is filled with so many positive affirmations and good reminders — some of which rhyme really well — without taking itself too seriously. Thank you for this spot of brightness at just the right time ❤️

This book was just really cute. I loved the illustrations of the cats, and even though they're not super detailed, they still all have personality.

Coelho collects many of his popular Purr in Ink comics along with some new ones in this delightful book. Most of the comics are filled with hilarity or some cat wisdom, though a few are sad and will tug at the reader's heart (particularly the last couple of comics). While the book does end on a sad note, readers will laugh through most of the comics and recognize their own cats in the silly antics of the cats filling this volume. This book is sure to be treasured by many a reader and cat lover.

I wasn't previously familiar with Coelho's work, and I suspect this has more appeal to existing fans. It was quite sweet, and definitely would do better as something to be idly flipped open when you need a pick-me-up. Some of the comics were quite funny, but I found some were trying a little too hard to be meaningful, or forcing a rhyme. I think the main issue with these is that in an effort to provide affirmations, Coelho has forgotten these are, after all, cats, and they sometimes ended up not very cat-like at all.

A hilarious, heartwarming comic book featuring cute cats! What more could you want? Book of Purrs combines sweet self-care reminders and hilarious feline thoughts all in one. The illustrations are super cute too! The book is more of an anthology of small comics rather than one overarching story, making it a quick read if you want to take it all in at once. It's also perfect if you want to read one comic a day. You can open the book on any page and get a smile for the day!

I am thankful I read this one today, a tough day for me emotionally. This book reads like a warm hug from a sweet black cat who can’t help being just a little feisty at times, but also has a lot of love and wisdom to share with us. This book almost got me crying because it was so sweet. I enjoyed it a lot!

In this book, you'll find motivational messages or funny jokes from your favorite felines that will never fail to brighten your day. And it doesn't matter which page you open it to; there is no specific order!
As I cracked open this book, I was immediately overwhelmed by an abundance of cuteness. The endearing and amusing portrayals of cats, paired with a truly unique art style, captivated me from the start. Every message I discovered within its pages filled me with pure delight, genuine laughter, and a comforting warmth.
I have yet to encounter a book quite like this one, and reading it was indeed a delightful experience. The feline characters in the book brought to mind my own two beloved cats, Mochi and Waffles.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone in search of heartwarming messages and a good, wholesome laugh.

Happy Reading, Laly ❤️ 📚

Whiskers of Wisdom in Bite-Sized Purrs

Luis Coelho’s The Book of Purrs is a whimsical collection that perfectly captures the essence of feline musings, blending humor with heartwarming reflections. It’s a charming combination of comics and witty quotes, offering insight into the everyday lives of cats from their perspective. Readers who love cats will find themselves smiling at how relatable the scenarios are, from the silent demands of a cat sitting on your lap to their mysterious yet endearing nature.

While the book delights with its light and amusing tone, it slightly lacks variety in its illustrations, with certain panels repeating the same images. But the visual appeal and the witty content still manages to shine through. The book succeeds in offering cozy, light-hearted enjoyment for cat lovers who can easily see their own pets reflected in its pages. It will surely bring a smile to anyone with a soft spot for furry companions.

I follow Luis Coelho and their googly eyed cat comics on Instagram, so when I discovered they were publishing a book of them and I had an opportunity to read an early release eARC of it I couldn't pass it up. Luis's art always brings a smile to my face, and their book succeeded in making me giggle/ smile and blep from start to finish. The art style is adorable, the little void cats are precious and I would definitely recommend checking this out if you need a little pick me up on a down day.

May the purr be with you. Keep up the great work Luis!

Cute book with black cats and motivating, comforting words. The art style wasn't fully my thing but it was a cute read nonetheless.

Short review: This is for old ladies who send good morning blingees.

Slightly longer review: Love the use of colour and the art most of the time (I do find the cats' eyes more unsettling than adorable). The messages are nice but not groundbreaking. It was cute. It was okay.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review!

This collection of comics was an absolute delight. I think people should know going in that there isn’t a cohesive storyline. These illustrations are so beautiful.

Rating: 5/5 stars

I’d like to thank NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the ARC of The Book of Purrs, and I can confidently say it’s an absolute delight! I was already familiar with and loved Luís Coelho’s work through Instagram, so I had high expectations—and this book delivered.

It’s impossibly cute and incredibly relatable, especially as a cat owner. Every page resonates with the life of anyone who’s ever been at the mercy of a feline friend. The artistic style is everything. It perfectly captures the essence of the internet’s beloved cat memes, making this book the ideal gift for any cat person in your life.

What I found interesting was how Coelho interjects the book with human inspiration and motivation, but all in a delightful cat form. It’s a blend of quirky cat-life antics with unexpected philosophical musings and motivational elements. At times, it felt a little odd to switch from the funny cat moments to deeper reflections, but overall it worked, adding a unique charm to the book. The rhymes, while sometimes a bit forced, didn’t detract from the experience, and in some ways, they added to the playful, whimsical tone of the whole thing.

The Book of Purrs is a joy to read, filled with moments that’ll make you laugh, smile, and think a little—all while admiring its absolutely adorable illustrations. Highly recommend!
