I never connected climate change with my diet, yet Eating Does It. Seriously, the book is called Eating Does It—Health Ourselves and Our Planets With Food. It focuses on the relationship between nutritional and climatic sciences and how to eat efficiently for both, weaving in international recipes along the way. This book interested me because my undergraduate degree focused on Food Science and Nutrition.
The book comes off as a mandate for change with recommendations like "eating lower on the food chain to lessen the amount of energy used to create food." In fact, plant-based diets can help reduce greenhouse gases and slow the rate of increasing temperatures and rough weather. These diets can also limit the risks of chronic diseases and help the body heal.
The author submersed herself into her research to pull together associations and uncover anomalies between nutrition and the impact of climate change. She dedicates chapters to focus on crises, such as one that highlights the rise in cancer. She points to its earliest reports in the U.S., digs into hospital records to uncover its prevalence before its first record, and considers its origins in other countries. In her analysis, she considers the impact of developing countries and the Covid-19 pandemic.
Some insights resonated with me, such as the following:
"Although many diseases have a genetic component making some people more susceptible, behavioral and environmental factors can either control or encourage them."
This quote is something people need to be reminded of or know because it's not just one thing that can lead to a disease. Several factors can contribute to health issues similar to how certain weather patterns can line up to create the "perfect" storm.
Here’s another powerful statement the author makes: ”Climate change is earth's chronic disease” because among many things “it pushes earth to its functional limit.”
Initially, I found the book to be more of an academic read. I would use it as a supplementary book for a college course. It will appeal to people dedicated to environmental change, nutritionists, and those who are dedicated to plant-based diets. My only suggestion would be to break down the reading into a YouTube channel with a daily lifestyle that incorporates a more conversational approach to reach more people.
I would reread this book and encourage others to read it to learn what they can do to protect our environment.

A health and wellness book focused on the benefits of a plant based diet. The recipes are a nice addition.

I am a great believer in we are what we eat, this book shows many good examples and facts of the power of food for health. A recommended read.

This is a well designed around choosing a plant-based lifestyle. I went into this expecting more recipes and the like, but was pleasantly surprised that this book is so informative around the reality of our environmental impacts. As someone who has been plant-based for nine years, there was still a lot of new information and I am eager to continue to dive deeper into this book and try some of the recipes too.

As I’m getting older I want to feel better and healthier. This book brings up a lot of good points and information. I also like that it talks about steps to help the planet. The scientific chapters really make you think. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a healthier lifestyle.

As a plant based eater myself I found this interesting as my focus was mostly on food but this opened my eyes to other areas of benefit from the lifestyle. Also liked the recipes at the back. Worth a read if you care about our planet and where we are heading.

A great and thought-provoking exploration of how we can and should think about what and how we eat. Certainly of interest as I contemplate making changes to my diet for health.

Unfortunately this was not my favorite read. It was not as focused on food and recipes as I would have liked. It was very well researched, however, and definitely great for someone looking to understand more about climate change.

A thoroughly researched and highly thought provoking read. Some delicious sounding plant based recipes included as well.
