This was not a fun read for me. I would have DNFed if it wasn't an arc and that's saying something because it's really difficult for a witchy read to not at least entertain me.
The main character was so annoying and I really couldn't stand her. Miscommunication should be her middle name, and most everything could have been resolved with a conversation or common sense. The family squabbles were grating, repetitive, and stupid. The fun sister was the only positive character, and she should have been the main character. The FMC's romance was also nonexistent and yet also completely predictable. I have little to say about the MMC because there's little to say about him. The author describes him as Tom Hardy and that's all I can remember because he's so boring.
The writing was fine but very millennial humor with way too many trite pop culture references. (It should be forbidden for the same Taylor Swift "the problem is me" lyric to be referenced ever again.) A much better version of witch who left magic behind and hasn't been back to her magical town, comes back years later to deal with a town issue only she can handle being from her specific family, and interconnected townie family and ex drama is Payback's a Witch. The witchy town is much better, too. Just read that.
Thank you, Avon Books, for the arc!
Did not like the female main character and not my favorite read, but I did finish it and did enjoy the fall vibes.
After having some trouble connecting with anything I’ve been reading lately, I’m glad I picked this baby up. She was light, she was fun, and she made me feel like I was in Stars Hollow…. With magic, of course.
The character development was pretty light and the emotions of the MC were very middle-grade in my opinion.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The perfect fall read! I immediately became obsessed with the characters and story line. Recommending this to all my friends for a fun fall read!
Thank you for providing me with this ARC!
I was immediately hooked when I saw Gilmore Girls and Charmed, but ultimately the story fell flat for me.
Starting with the pros. The setting was very cozy & autumn vibes which I am a sucker for. There was some witty dialogue. The overall premise of the book had great potential.
As for the negatives, the relationships in this book felt toxic and I found a lot of the characters annoying. There is a lot of juvenile dialogue. The story was a bit predictable.
Overall I think it had much better potential but sadly I didn’t love it!
I really liked the idea of this book and the premise of the magic town and witch sisters. I just had a hard time following the story and the dialogue had a hard time keeping me hooked.
If you want a fun magical read, then I would recommend this book just know going in it can be a little rough to read.
thank you to netgalley & avon books for the e-arc
i was drawn in by the concept of it being like gilmore girls meets charmed. growing up on both shows this book seemed like a no brainer.
the plot seemed like such a good idea that i was drawn in only to be let down a little by the writing style - it felt very juvenile and rushed.
the characters were all lovable apart from the main character :/ i really didn’t get on with scarlett and longed for little glimpses of someone else. she felt very woe is me and i couldn’t shake that feeling the whole book. but i did like her little character development towards the end
the romance is not a big storyline in this at all and i was a little disappointed by it - i wanted more of nate and scarlett (with less scarlett at the same time)
the ‘plot twist’ i felt coming from a mile away but felt a little rushed when explained. same with the ending, it suddenly all just happened within a short period of time
i had fun whilst reading but also felt like it had so much promise that was just missed a little bit
Thank you, NetGalley & Avon Books, for approving this ARC.
This is such a great autumnal cosy read, it's low stakes, closed door rom com set in a cosy magical small town.
Scarlet left her hometown 10 years ago after she blamed herself for her father's death following a spell that went wrong until she is asked to coke home by her sister with an emergency they need her help with.
Scarlet not only has to face her family and the guilt she feels but also her best friend Nate, who, prior to her leaving, were going to see if the friendship could become more.
If you liked the pumpkin spice cafe, freedom valley series & the Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic books you will really enjoy this book.
A perfect autumnal, magical read.
I felt so cosy reading this, I could really imagine the setting and the goings on, I liked the characters and so enjoyed it the lightness of the book.
DNF at 50%. I tried. The writing was actually kind of witty, but the storyline took one too many wrong turns.
The author bio is so strange and has to be fabricated, especially the last line which I think refers to Emily from Gilmore Girls and her relationship with Lorelai and Rory. Along with a pen name? You can’t find anything out about the author online. All around strange to me.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Impractical Magic by Emily Grimoire was a delightful read. I really hope this becomes a series, maybe even a family saga! The banter between the sisters was fun, and there was a great spark between Scarlett and Nate. I loved how the book explores the town’s history and made me feel like I had walked through it many times. The story is open and inclusive, and while there aren’t many surprises since the plot is hinted at throughout, I found the ending very satisfying. It tied everything together beautifully and stirred up strong emotions while addressing even the smallest problems.
The main character does tend to worry a lot and often blames herself, but her thought process was clear. I didn’t care much for the mother character, as she seemed pretty unlikable. Overall, I give it 4.5 stars. I enjoyed the story a lot and will definitely read the next one if there is one, but it didn’t fully capture my heart.
I don’t normally read magic books but I did love this.. A story of 3 magic sisters and how they come home to help their town. Lots of nice twists, a mother who is not what you expect. Some funny bits and a good ending and some romance thrown in and a sullen teenager. Loved it.
A fairly common theme of a witch with wonky magic and the return of her ex boyfriend. All about how she manages to solve the glitch where others had failed.
I didn't quite finish to the end as the story followed enough of a common trajectory for me me to feel I had no need to.
I heard Impractical Magic and was obviously sold. It’s a fun, witchy themed, friends to lovers, Rom Com. This book was so whimsical and fun. I loved the concept of a secret magical town on the East Coast. This town is straight out of Gilmore Girls, but maybe too much so. I love a Gilmore Girls reference, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes you can get a little too close and it doesn’t do it for me. There were a lot of subtleties that were written well reference wise but I feel like at times it was straight out of the tv show. At first I really loved Scarlett’s character, and I understood why she had to leave, but other times I feel like she was a little too resentful of her magic. That made it a little hard to connect with her. She wanted to reject magic and a convenient lifestyle but then get upset when things were hard. I’m also not usually one to jump on a friends to lovers style book, but this one honestly was endearing. I loved how it played out for sure. I do think this is a fun read if you want something quick and cozy for the Autumn, so do not hesitate to pick up a copy!!
an absolutely precious lil fall time read. i read this in like, one solid sitting and enjoyed it for what it was. while this was not the most life changing book ive ever read, it delivered on those cozy vibes i search for in a book and with a side of romance, i can’t complain!!
For a first time author, this book had a lot going for it. Cozy small town vibes, sisterly love, magic, close coven of female witches, trans rep.
The story is a good one, while needing a bit more fleshing out. The characters are lovable and realistic.
I think this author has room to grow, but I'm very excited to see it happen.
The premise of this book pulled me in from the start! I love a good cozy, witchy read and this book was good overall!
I loved the setting of this book, who doesn’t love a small town with quirky characters?! And like I said, the premise of the book was perfect. I loved the sister’s relationship, the town dynamics, and the plot.
I didn’t love the characters, I found many of them to be annoying and a little over the top. And while I enjoyed the plot, I did not enjoy the ending. I’m glad it ended the way it did but the last chapter or two I was angry at the characters.
It is perfect for fall though and a super quick read, I think many readers will enjoy it!
I was initially very charmed by the Gilmore girls meets Charmed tagline, I was however very disappointed as I don't understand why on Earth she would go back to a family that is so toxic?! I read to escape not to relive trauma lol. I had the autumn vibes I'll give you that but the plot would have gained if the relationship between Scarlett and her mother. I do have to give credit to the atmosphere in the book that was really cozy, it made me crave a pumpkin spice latte
This was a wholesome witchy read full with cute autumnal vibes! But the relationships oozed toxicity and it became very frustrating at times
Brilliant witchy book, perfect for the vibe of spooky season. The second chance is so sweet, and I love Scarlett. Love her process to heal and confront her past and her relationships. Cosy vibes and pumpkin spice latte : check
